RIDGEWOOD, NJ – Police in Ridgewood have reported that a driver from Mahwah has been arrested after intentionally colliding with another vehicle on Route 17 and then fleeing the scene.

Ridgewood Police Chief Jacqueline Luthcke stated that the incident occurred on Thursday at around 6 p.m. when Baron J. Chan, 34, drove his BMW M5 into another vehicle on the southbound highway.

The other driver suffered no serious injuries despite the vehicle veering off the road onto the grass shoulder. Chan was later apprehended by Ridgewood Police Sergeant John Chuck and Officers Patrick Daly and Vincenzo Vaccarella when he returned to the scene.

After being taken into custody, Chan was charged with assault by auto, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and criminal mischief, according to the chief. Additionally, he received 11 motor vehicle summonses for various offenses, including reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

As of Sunday, Chan remains in custody at the Bergen County Jail.
