Fatal Pedestrian Crash on Capital Beltway as Victim Changed Flat Tire

COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred on Friday on the Capital Beltway in College Park, Maryland.

The victim, Olumide Stephen, 55, from Washington D.C., was struck by a vehicle while changing a tire on his Toyota Highlander. Surya Padmanabhan, 21, of Boyds, Maryland, drove off the road in his Toyota Prius, striking the rear of the Highlander and Stephen.

Despite the efforts of emergency medical service personnel, Stephen was pronounced dead at the scene. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is continuing the investigation into the accident.

Personnel from the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration and Prince George’s County Fire and EMS assisted with lane closures and emergency response.
