UTICA, NY – The Utica Police Department has issued a public safety alert concerning the usage of synthetic marijuana and its recent effects, after investigating several overdose situations. According to the department, individuals have consumed a synthetic marijuana containing benzodiazepine, a category of drug similar to Valium or Xanax, without prior knowledge of the mixed ingredients.

The usage of the drug has resulted in slow and/or labored breathing, near unconsciousness, and other severe health consequences. Responding officers have secured the substances and, upon testing by an investigator with the Special Operations Unit, discovered the presence of the drug.

The department has initiated an investigation into the overdoses and is working to ascertain if a common link exists amongst the individuals affected. The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is currently leading the investigation, and updates will be released as available.

The Utica Police Department urges the public to exercise caution and avoid using synthetic marijuana, as the consequences of consumption are severe and potentially life-threatening. The department has emphasized the importance of being aware of the contents of any drugs consumed, and the potential risks and side effects
