As the summer season approaches, law enforcement officers in the region are gearing up to ensure safety on the waterways. Currently, 17 officers are undergoing the three-week Standardized Marine Patrol Vessel Operator’s Course, which is being hosted by the Suffolk County Police Marine Bureau and taught by personnel from the SCPD, Nassau County Police Department, and Town of East Hampton Harbormaster’s Office.

The course covers various topics related to marine patrol, including navigation, search and rescue, marine firefighting, boating law enforcement, and boating while intoxicated enforcement. With more boats expected to be on the water as the weather warms up, law enforcement agencies are increasing their efforts to prevent accidents and promote safety.

As part of the training, officers from the SCPD, NCPD, NYPD, Town of Babylon Bay Constables, and the Groton (CT) Police Department participated in a Helicopter Rescue Swimmer Deployment and Recovery exercise in the Great South Bay on Tuesday afternoon. This exercise allows officers to hone their skills in responding to emergencies and rescuing individuals in distress on the water.

By investing in training and education for marine patrol officers, law enforcement agencies are working to ensure that everyone can enjoy the waterways safely this summer.
