Bronx Driver Charged in Fatal Pedestrian Collision

BRONX, NY – Brian Spira, a 54-year-old male from the Bronx, has been arrested yesterday and charged with Failure to Yield and Failure to Exercise Due Care in connection with a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred on July 27, 2022.

The incident took place at Oxford Street and West 235 Street in the Bronx when Spira, driving a 2022 Mazda CX9, struck 99-year-old Bernice Schwartz while making a left turn. Schwartz was crossing the intersection at the time of the collision.

EMS responded to the scene and transported Schwartz, who had sustained severe head trauma, to Saint Barnabas Hospital. She was later pronounced deceased. Spira remained on the scene, and there is no suspicion of criminality at this time. The NYPD’s Highway Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident.
