ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – On Tuesday, at approximately 4:47 PM, Officer Salvatore Rando Jr. was flagged down by a boardwalk ambassador in reference to a male, later identified as Darren Brathwaite, who appeared to be in distress.
Brathwaite was seen going into the ocean at Hartford Avenue and the beach.
Officer Rando located Brathwaite in waist-high water, appearing distraught and initially refusing to exit the water.
With assistance from additional responding officers and EMS personnel, Brathwaite was persuaded to exit the water and walk to the shoreline, where Officer Rebecca Seabrook and EMS personnel met him.
Brathwaite was transported by ambulance to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for evaluation. A brief investigation revealed that Brathwaite was involved in a domestic violence incident in Brooklyn, NY, and was wanted for attempted murder.
Brathwaite was subsequently taken into custody and charged with Fugitive from Justice. He is now awaiting extradition to New York at the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
