Atlantic City unveils new U.S. flag retirement box

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Atlantic City Police Department Chief James Sarkos and City of Atlantic City – Government Mayor Marty Small, joined by Patricia Tatum and the American Legion, gathered at the Clayton G. Graham Public Safety Building for a meaningful dedication ceremony.

The event marked the installation of a newly established U.S. Flag Retirement Drop Box, aiming to facilitate the proper disposal of worn-out, torn, and tattered flags.

As summer approaches and spring cleaning activities are in full swing, many individuals find themselves needing to replace their weathered American flags. To assist those in need of disposing of their old flags, the Atlantic City Police Department offers a convenient solution. The secure drop box is located within the lobby area of the Public Safety Building, situated at 2715 Atlantic Avenue.


Discouraging the thoughtless discarding of used or outdated flags, the initiative ensures that collected flags undergo appropriate disposal methods.

By utilizing the drop box, community members can ensure a respectful retirement for the flags that have served their purpose.

The Atlantic City Police Foundation deserves special recognition for its contribution to this meaningful endeavor by purchasing the flag box. Their support has made this initiative possible.

Residents are encouraged to mark their calendars for the upcoming inaugural flag disposal ceremony, which will be held on June 14, 2023, at Bader Field in Atlantic City. The event will be hosted in collaboration with the American Legion, further emphasizing the significance of honoring and properly retiring the symbols that represent our nation.
