Norfolk, VA – Chief Mark Talbot of the Norfolk Police Department (NorfolkPD) presented a public safety briefing to the City Council yesterday, sharing encouraging statistics regarding crime rates in the city. Chief Talbot also highlighted the progress made with the implementation of the City of Norfolk Government’s Real Time Crime Center and the successful installation of 172 Flock Cameras throughout the city.

During the briefing, Chief Talbot revealed that homicides have seen a remarkable decline of 40% year-to-date. This decrease in violent crime is undoubtedly a positive development for the community. Moreover, the Chief reported that overall crime has dropped by 9% in Norfolk, demonstrating a significant improvement in public safety.

The installation of the Flock Cameras has played a crucial role in these positive outcomes. All 172 camera systems are fully operational and actively utilized by the NorfolkPD to combat crime effectively and enhance public safety measures. These cameras serve as a valuable tool in crime prevention, providing real-time monitoring and surveillance capabilities throughout the city.

Chief Talbot also provided an update on the progress of the Real Time Crime Center, informing council members that it remains on track for full operation by Fall 2023. The Real Time Crime Center will serve as a central hub for monitoring the Flock Cameras and analyzing data to support law enforcement efforts in preventing and responding to criminal activities promptly.
