NEW YORK, NY – Two strange aircraft were spotted flying over New York City early Wednesday morning. The planes were first spotted at around 9:30 am flying northbound toward Manhattan near the Verrazzano Bridge.

The oddly disc-shaped objects headed north toward the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge after traversing the Hudson River and making a low pass along the Manhattan skyline, with three F-18 fighters following closely.

At around 9 am, the New York City Police Department alerted the media of the two aircraft that were expected to enter NYC airspace at around that time.

Police said the aircraft would be escorted by three F-18 fighters and was nothing to worry about. In fact, they were confirmed to be E-2 aircraft and part of a military flyover of the city in support of the Parade of Ships and the annual Fleet Week.

The E-2 plane, also known as the E-2 Hawkeye, stands as a prominent and indispensable asset within the realm of military aviation. Developed by Northrop Grumman, this airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft has played a critical role in military operations for several decades.

One of the standout features of the E-2 plane is its distinctive radar system, housed in a rotating dome mounted above the fuselage. This advanced radar technology enables the aircraft to detect and track both aerial and surface targets with remarkable precision, providing invaluable situational awareness to commanders in the field.

The E-2’s primary mission is to serve as an airborne command and control center, acting as the “eyes in the sky” for naval operations. Equipped with state-of-the-art radar and communication systems, it plays a crucial role in coordinating air defense, surveillance, and strategic operations.

Fleet Week, an annual celebration of maritime heritage and the men and women serving in the United States Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, brings a wave of excitement to the vibrant city of New York. This highly anticipated event transforms the city into a hub of naval activities, attracting locals and visitors alike.
