PITTSBURGH, PA – An incident unfolded on Wednesday morning when a student was fatally shot outside Oliver Citywide Academy on Pittsburgh’s North Side.

The victim, Derrick Harris, 15, was reportedly on his way to the school around 7:25 a.m. when his classmate, Jaymier Perry, also 15, opened fire. Security cameras captured most of the incident, and two witnesses also observed the shooting.

Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Wayne Walters announced that Oliver Citywide will be operating remotely until at least after Memorial Day. Jaymier, who was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt with distinctive white lettering and was found with a black 9mm handgun allegedly belonging to his mother, is being charged as an adult with homicide.

This is the second incident in less than a year and a half that a student has been fatally shot outside the school. In January 2022, Marquis Campbell, 15, was killed while waiting to be driven home from the school.
