Bass River, NJ- The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is actively engaged in containment operations for a wildfire that has been burning in the area of Allen Road within Bass River State Forest. The fire has expanded to cover approximately 3,100 acres of land, with containment currently reported at 15%.

In an overnight operation, firefighters conducted a backfiring operation to aid in the containment of the fire. This strategic technique involves setting smaller controlled fires ahead of the main blaze to remove flammable materials and create a buffer zone, which helps to slow the fire’s progression. The backfiring operation will continue throughout the day with the goal of achieving containment targets.

To ensure public safety, several road closures have been put into effect. Allen Road, Oswego Road, Stage Road between North Maple Avenue and Rt. 679, and Rt. 679 between Rt. 563 and Leaktown Road are all currently closed. These closures are necessary to facilitate firefighting operations and to prevent any potential risks to motorists or nearby residents.

As a precautionary measure, the Timberline Campground has been evacuated. In addition, six residential structures are currently under threat from the fire. Local fire companies have stepped in to provide structure protection, working tirelessly to safeguard these properties. Their efforts are greatly appreciated and vital in minimizing potential damage.

Furthermore, for the safety of hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, the Batona Trail within Bass River State Forest has been closed until further notice. This closure ensures that individuals do not inadvertently enter areas affected by the wildfire, reducing the risk of accidents or interference with firefighting operations.

The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is in constant communication with local authorities, closely monitoring the situation as they work diligently to contain the Allen Road wildfire. Updates will be provided regularly to keep the public informed about the progress being made and any developments that may arise.

The priority of the New Jersey Forest Fire Service remains the protection of lives, structures, and natural resources and to contain the fire from spreading further.
