Canadian forest fire turns sky orange in New Jersey, raising air quality alarm

Phil Stilton

TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an Air Quality Action Day for Particulate Matter on Wednesday, June 7.

Statewide, levels of fine particulate matter are expected to rise to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups throughout the day and possibly into the evening. This increase is attributed to the transport of wildfire smoke from the Canadian wildfires.

In response to the air quality concerns in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy has released a statement emphasizing the importance of precautionary measures.

Governor Murphy expressed his team’s close coordination with the NJ DEP as they closely monitor the impact of the Canadian wildfires on air quality in the state.

With conditions deteriorating across New Jersey, the governor strongly advised sensitive individuals, including those with heart or lung disease, the elderly, and young children, to prioritize their safety by limiting strenuous activities and minimizing time spent outdoors today.

Governor Murphy blamed the conditions in New Jersey on the climate crisis today.

The NJ DEP continues to monitor the situation closely and urges residents to stay informed about air quality updates and advisories. The department encourages individuals to follow the recommended precautions and to prioritize their health and well-being during this period of heightened air pollution.
