NEWARK, DE — A bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene following a collision with a 2013 Toyota Sienna at the intersection of South College Avenue and East Delaware Avenue early this morning.

Newark Police reported that the incident occurred at approximately 2:49 a.m. The Toyota, traveling eastbound on West Delaware Avenue, struck the northbound bicyclist as both approached the intersection. The impact ejected the bicyclist, who landed on the north side of East Delaware Avenue.

The traffic signal at the intersection was operational, showing a green light for eastbound traffic on West Delaware Avenue and a red light for traffic on South College Avenue.

The 24-year-old driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and is not suspected of speeding or impairment. The identity of the bicyclist is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

Road closures were in effect for about three hours as authorities investigated the crash.
