NYPD Officers Cleared in 2019 Bronx Shooting of Kawaski Trawick

NEW YORK, NY – Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban announced that two NYPD officers involved in the 2019 shooting death of 32-year-old Bronx resident Kawaski Trawick were found to have acted lawfully. The Bronx District Attorney previously declined to charge the officers in November 2020, and an NYPD Force Investigation Division (FID) inquiry also cleared them of wrongdoing in January 2021.

Following the FID’s conclusion, body-worn camera footage was provided to the Civilian Complaint Review Board (CCRB) as per a memorandum of understanding, which was still in effect until five months before the disciplinary statute of limitations expired. The CCRB later brought charges, but only for alleged criminal conduct due to the timing. In September 2023, a judge ruled the officers had not engaged in criminal activity.

The NYPD has since updated its procedures to ensure the CCRB receives all pertinent body-worn camera footage and documentation within 90 days of a request, aiming to streamline future reviews of FID cases.
