A wrong-way driver in Connecticut led police on a brief pursuit before crashing into two other cars, injuring a driver, and subsequently assaulting two officers.
The incident occurred in Fairfield County around 1:30 p.m. on Monday in the town of Wilton. Identified as Jorge Oliva, aged 48, he hails from Trumbull and was observed speeding in a Honda SUV heading northbound in the southbound lanes of Route 7 (Danbury Road) close to Ridgefield Road, against oncoming traffic, the Wilton Police reported.
Police in Wilton initiated a pursuit as Oliva was alleged to have tossed a baseball cap out of his vehicle window. Eventually, the law enforcement officers decided to end the chase. Subsequently, Oliva crashed into two other vehicles near the Danbury and Olmstead Hill roads intersection a few minutes later, which resulted in an injury to a female driver taken by ambulance to Norwalk Hospital. Following the collision, Oliva physically assaulted two police officers in Wilton, kicking one and striking the other officer in the nose, as per the police account.
After a brief struggle, Oliva was apprehended at approximately 1:50 p.m. and then transported to Norwalk Hospital for the treatment of minor injuries. A subsequent police statement disclosed that Oliva faced multiple charges, including assault of public safety, interfering with an investigation, reckless driving, failure to stop, and littering. He was detained under a bond of $50,000 pending his scheduled arraignment in Stamford Superior Court.
