New Jersey Senator Facing Federal Corruption Charges Files to Run as Independent
U.S. Senator Menendez arrives at Federal Court in New York

TRENTON, NJ – Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, currently facing 16 federal corruption charges, has filed to run for reelection as an independent. The move introduces uncertainty into a race that would typically not worry Democrats. Menendez, aged 70, submitted 2,465 petition signatures for his candidacy, significantly more than the required 800, as per the New Jersey Division of Elections.

Menendez announced in March his decision not to seek reelection as a Democrat but expressed hopes of being exonerated in time to run as an “independent Democrat” in the general election. However, his ongoing trial in Manhattan is expected to continue beyond the filing deadline.

Speaking to reporters at the federal courthouse, Menendez emphasized his desire to focus his campaign on his 18-year Senate tenure, highlighting his efforts in securing aid for New Jersey post-Hurricane Sandy and supporting hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Menendez has not disclosed whether he would caucus with Democrats or Republicans if reelected.
