BOSTON, MA—The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts announced today the unsealing of an indictment charging former State Senator Dean Tran and his sister, Tuyet T. Martin, with multiple counts including obstruction of justice and perjury. The allegations are connected to an attempt to cover up fraudulent activities involving a fictitious job offer.

Dean Tran, 48, from Fitchburg, faces charges of obstruction of justice and making false statements. Tuyet T. Martin, 54, from Pelham, N.H., is charged with two counts of obstruction of justice and one count of perjury. Martin was arrested this morning and is scheduled to appear in federal court in Boston this afternoon, while Tran will appear at a later date.

This indictment follows a November 2023 arrest where Tran was charged in a 28-count federal indictment related to the fraudulent collection of Pandemic Unemployment Assistance benefits and failing to report income on his tax returns from 2020 to 2022.

Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy emphasized the gravity of the charges, noting the defendants’ “calculated effort to defraud the government and deceive federal investigators.” Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Boston Division, Jodi Cohen, and other officials echoed this sentiment, underlining the commitment to prosecuting those who obstruct justice.

The investigation revealed that during a June 2022 search of Tran’s home, false statements were made about a job offer letter purportedly from Martin’s company, Alecon Enterprises, Inc. It is also alleged that Martin attempted to delete emails and provided false testimony regarding the employment offer to a federal grand jury in July 2023.

The obstruction of justice charge alone could result in up to 20 years in prison, underscoring the severity of the allegations. The case continues to develop as federal authorities pursue justice in this complex fraud and corruption case.
