Impaired driver crashes into Takoma Park police cruiser, injuring officer

GAITHERSBURG, Md. — An impaired driver was arrested after crashing into a Takoma Park police cruiser Monday night, seriously injuring a police captain, authorities said.

The crash occurred at approximately 7:25 p.m. near Piney Branch Road and Park Valley Road. Officers from the Montgomery County Police Department’s 3rd District and Montgomery County Fire Rescue responded to the scene.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Takoma Park police captain was driving his cruiser when he was struck by the impaired driver. The captain sustained serious injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The suspect was taken into custody, though authorities have not yet released their identity or specific charges.

The incident remains under investigation as officials work to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
