Gun-whipping thief arrested after violent D.C. street robbery

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with a violent armed robbery that took place in the Columbia Heights neighborhood late last month, the Metropolitan Police Department announced Monday.

According to police, the incident happened around 4:42 p.m. on Wednesday, March 26, when several suspects approached and assaulted victims in the 3100 block of Hiatt Place NW. One victim was struck with a handgun before the suspects stole property and fled the area.

Following an investigation, detectives arrested Orlin Lemus-Cruz of Northwest D.C. on Saturday, April 5. He has been charged with Robbery While Armed.

Investigation remains active

Police have not indicated whether additional suspects have been identified or apprehended. The investigation remains ongoing.

Authorities are encouraging anyone with information about the case to contact MPD by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting 50411. A reward of up to $10,000 is being offered for tips leading to an arrest and conviction in any violent crime case.
