Gunman flees after opening fire on M Street just before dawn

An early-morning shooting on M Street SW sparked a manhunt for a suspect last seen in denim as police work to identify him

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A man wearing blue jeans is being sought after a shooting erupted just before 2 a.m. Thursday in the 400 block of M Street SW, leaving investigators searching for answers and urging the public to help identify the suspect.

The gunfire broke the quiet of the early morning hours in Southwest, where responding officers arrived at the scene to find evidence of a shooting. The extent of injuries, if any, has not been confirmed.

Witnesses described the suspect as a Black male, approximately 30 years old, last seen fleeing the area in blue jeans. His shirt and shoes were not described, and no direction of travel was provided.

The incident prompted an alert in the First District as investigators canvassed the neighborhood and reviewed potential surveillance footage. A motive has not been disclosed.
