Elderly man recovering after being struck by car while crossing Hylan Boulevard

FDNY Ambulance on scene to provide medical assistance to victims.

A 72-year-old Staten Island man was hospitalized Saturday evening after being struck by a car while crossing Hylan Boulevard in the Great Kills neighborhood, police said.

The incident occurred around 6:05 p.m. at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Wiman Avenue. According to the NYPD, the victim was legally crossing the street with the walk signal when he was hit by a 2023 Mazda making a left turn.

The driver, a 19-year-old man, remained at the scene and was not injured, police confirmed. EMS transported the pedestrian, identified by family members as Diang Zi Jang, to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze.

Jang, who was returning from a nearby park, was in stable condition and suffered minor injuries, according to a spokesperson for the Deputy Commissioner of Public Information. He had recently been discharged from the hospital after undergoing brain surgery a month earlier.

“He was returning home from the park at the end of Wiman,” said Tiam Ouyang, Jang’s son-in-law, in an interview with SILive.com.

Authorities confirmed that Jang was struck while walking in the crosswalk. No arrests have been made, and the NYPD has not indicated whether any summonses were issued to the driver.

The crash is under investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad. No mechanical issues were reported with the vehicle, and the driver’s identity has not been released.

The intersection where the incident occurred is a busy corridor in Great Kills, and safety concerns have been raised in the past about pedestrian visibility and traffic flow in the area.

Officials have not stated whether surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras is being reviewed.
