Trump endorses Rep. Mike Lawler in bid for re-election to New York’s 17th District

Former President Donald Trump has formally endorsed Rep. Mike Lawler for re-election in New York’s 17th Congressional District, praising him as a “strong champion” for the Hudson Valley and a “true America First Patriot.”

In a statement released Tuesday through his political action committee, Trump highlighted Lawler’s efforts on border security, economic growth, tax reduction, and energy policy. The endorsement marks Trump’s most direct involvement in the Hudson Valley congressional race ahead of November’s general election.

“Mike is fighting hard to Secure our Border, Grow our Economy, Create Jobs, Lower Taxes, Promote American Energy DOMINANCE, Support our Brave Military/Veterans and Law Enforcement,” Trump said in the statement. “He has my Complete and Total Endorsement for Re-Election.”

Lawler, a freshman Republican, flipped the suburban seat in 2022 and is considered one of the most vulnerable incumbents in the country. His district includes portions of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, and Dutchess counties.

Trump also emphasized Lawler’s work on local tax issues, particularly his advocacy for restoring the full State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction, a top priority for many suburban voters in high-tax regions of New York.

High-stakes race draws national attention

Lawler’s seat is a prime target for Democrats seeking to regain control of the U.S. House. Several Democratic challengers have entered the race, including former Rep. Mondaire Jones, who previously represented the district before redistricting.

The endorsement places Lawler firmly within Trump’s political orbit, as the former president continues to exert influence over GOP candidates nationwide. Lawler has sought to balance local interests with national party priorities, occasionally diverging from party leadership on key votes.

The 17th District is one of several suburban swing districts expected to play a decisive role in the battle for House control. In 2020, President Joe Biden carried the district by double digits, though Republican turnout surged in the midterms.

The Trump endorsement could galvanize support among Republican primary voters while complicating Lawler’s path in a general election where moderate and independent voters are critical.

Trump’s backing comes as the GOP intensifies efforts to hold battleground districts in the Northeast amid broader national shifts heading into November.
