WILDWOOD, N.J. — A 21-year-old Bridgeton man was arrested after allegedly displaying an assault-style rifle from his car window in Wildwood earlier this week, Cape May County authorities announced.

According to a statement released by the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office, Ahmed Omera was identified by investigators as the individual operating a vehicle involved in a firearms-related incident on May 21. Wildwood Police were alerted to the scene after video footage surfaced showing a driver brandishing a rifle from the driver’s side window.

The footage was reviewed by the Wildwood Police Department, which then initiated a joint investigation with the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit. Police determined that Omera had been operating the vehicle at the time of the incident.

A court-authorized search warrant was executed the following day at Omera’s residence on the 300 West block of Broad Street in Bridgeton. Omera was taken into custody without incident, and authorities recovered a firearm matching the weapon seen in the footage.

Authorities underscore safety ahead of holiday weekend

Omera has been charged with Possession of a Weapon for an Unlawful Purpose, a third-degree crime. He is currently being held at the Cape May County Correctional Facility pending a detention hearing.

“This case is a clear example of the strong interagency cooperation that is vital to keeping our communities safe,” said Prosecutor Jeffrey H. Sutherland. “Displaying a weapon in public, especially from a moving vehicle, is an act that creates fear and jeopardizes the safety of our residents.”

Chief Joseph Murphy of the Wildwood Police Department added, “This arrest is a stark reminder of the dangers posed by those who seek to disrupt the safety and peace of our community. We are committed to maintaining public safety, and any individual who comes to Wildwood intending to engage in unlawful activity will be met with swift and decisive action.”
