NEWARK, N.J. — New Jersey commuters enjoyed an unusually smooth start to Friday morning, with light traffic and no major delays reported on major highways or in and out of New York City and Philadelphia.
Both the Garden State Parkway and the New Jersey Turnpike saw normal flow during peak travel hours, a rare occurrence heading into a busy Memorial Day weekend.
One minor incident was reported on the Turnpike. As of 8:03 a.m., a crash on the Western Spur northbound just south of Interchange 16W (NJ Route 3) in Rutherford had blocked the left lane. No injuries or extended delays were reported.
Authorities advised drivers to remain cautious as traffic volume is expected to increase significantly later today and into the weekend.
Memorial Day travel expected to ramp up
Traffic officials expect congestion to build by Friday afternoon as residents head to shore destinations and other getaway spots for the long weekend.
For now, commuters are enjoying a rare moment of light traffic before holiday travel surges across the region.
