CLINTON, Md. — A 53-year-old man from Accokeek has been arrested and charged in connection with a deadly shooting earlier this month that left a Clinton man dead in a parking lot.

Chelley Thorne is accused of killing 30-year-old Anthony Traevon Dawson on May 12 near the 9800 block of Piscataway Road. Officers responded to the area around 9:40 p.m. and found Dawson outside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators said Thorne and Dawson were acquainted, though a motive has not yet been determined. Police have not released additional details on the nature of their relationship.

Thorne faces first-degree and second-degree murder charges, along with related offenses. He is currently being held without bond at the Department of Corrections.

Authorities are continuing the investigation and have asked for help from the public in gathering information related to the case.

Homicide investigation continues as suspect held without bond

Police have not disclosed whether the weapon used in the shooting has been recovered. There was no mention of other suspects or if surveillance footage captured the shooting.

The homicide occurred in a commercial area along a well-traveled corridor, but no other injuries were reported. Witness accounts and any additional forensic evidence are being reviewed by the Homicide Unit.
