by Breaking Local News Report

NEW CITY, N.Y. — A Valley Cottage man has been sentenced to seven years in state prison for sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl over a period of nearly ten months, Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh, II announced Tuesday.

Mauricio Sicha Torres, 36, pleaded guilty on February 11 to Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, a class D felony. He was sentenced on May 27 by Rockland County Supreme Court Justice Rachel Tanguay to seven years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Torres admitted to engaging in multiple acts of sexual contact with the child, which occurred underneath her clothing at a residence in the Town of Clarkstown. The abuse began in September 2023 and continued through June 2024. The victim disclosed the abuse to a family member in July 2024, leading to a law enforcement investigation and Torres’ eventual arrest.

Before Torres is released from prison, a Sex Offender Registration Act (SORA) hearing will be held, and he will be required to register as a sex offender in New York State.

DA emphasizes accountability for crimes against children

Rockland County District Attorney Walsh condemned the abuse and praised the outcome of the case. “The children of Rockland County must be protected and their abusers held accountable,” Walsh said. “The sentence of this defendant, Mauricio Sicha Torres, sends the message that individuals who seriously harm and subject our children to sexual abuse will face justice in Rockland County.”

The case was prosecuted by the Special Victims Unit of the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, which focuses on crimes involving vulnerable victims, including minors.
