Phony traffic ticket texts target New Jersey drivers in new phishing scam

by Local News Report

TRENTON, N.J. — A widespread phishing scam is targeting New Jersey residents with fake text messages claiming they owe traffic ticket fines, according to a warning issued by the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts.

The scam texts falsely assert that recipients must pay penalties to avoid severe consequences, including license suspension, increased toll fees, or damage to their credit. Officials say the messages are crafted to pressure victims into providing personal or financial information.

The Judiciary emphasized that it does not send text messages threatening enforcement actions for unpaid traffic tickets or court complaints. Any messages of this nature are fraudulent.

Recipients are urged not to click on links or provide any information in response to these texts. Court staff and members of the public are being cautioned to treat unsolicited communications requesting sensitive information with suspicion.

Judiciary works to raise awareness and prevent identity theft

Efforts are underway through the Judiciary’s Communications and Community Relations offices to inform the public and prevent further victimization. Authorities are reminding residents to report suspicious messages and avoid taking any action based on the false claims.

Any official court-related correspondence will follow established procedures and will not include demands via text for immediate payment or threats of enforcement.
