JERSEY CITY, N.J. — A Hudson County Sheriff’s Officer died Friday morning after falling from a ninth-floor window at the Hudson County Administration Building, authorities said.
The officer, identified as 29-year-old Justin Rivera, was found injured on the exterior side of the building near Central Avenue shortly before 9:30 a.m. Emergency responders transported Rivera to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead around 10 a.m.
Rivera was on duty when the incident occurred. According to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, the Administration Building at 595 Newark Avenue was closed to the public at the time due to an unrelated power outage.
A preliminary investigation by the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit and Internal Affairs Unit indicates the fall appears accidental. The exact cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy by the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the death of a Hudson County Sheriff’s Officer that occurred on Friday,” Prosecutor Esther Suarez stated.
Building closed during incident as investigation continues
The investigation remains active, and authorities are awaiting results from the medical examiner before determining the final classification of Rivera’s death.
