UNION, N.J. — Morning traffic across New Jersey saw multiple incidents and delays Monday, including crashes and lane closures affecting major highways and commuter routes, according to the state’s 511 traffic system.
A crash on I-78 westbound in the local lanes just east of Exit 51 (Burnett Avenue) in Union Township led to the closure of the left lane of three as of 8:12 a.m. Emergency response crews were present at the scene.
On the Garden State Parkway northbound, a crash reported at 7:55 a.m. south of Exit 136 (Stiles Street) in Clark Township was cleared quickly, with all lanes reopened shortly after the incident.
At 7:18 a.m., a southbound crash on US 9 north of NJ 440 in Woodbridge Township resulted in the right lane of two being closed to traffic. Motorists were advised to use caution when passing through the area.
In Edison Township, a downed utility pole affected traffic on US 1 northbound north of Woodbridge Avenue. One of three lanes remained closed as of 5:20 a.m., with utility crews dispatched to the site.
Minor delays developed on I-295 northbound from south of Exit 65 (CR 649/Sloan Avenue) in Hamilton Township to just before Exit 67 (US 1) in Lawrence Township. Despite the congestion, all lanes were open.
Parkway and tunnel traffic delays continue
The Garden State Parkway northbound saw multiple slowdowns. A two-mile delay was reported in Dover Township near the Toms River Toll Plaza as of 8:01 a.m. Further north, an eight-mile delay extended from the Colonia Service Area in Woodbridge Township to Exit 140 (US 22/NJ 82) in Union Township.
The Lincoln Tunnel continued to experience consistent delays. Both the south and center tunnels eastbound had 30-minute travel times from New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E to New York as of 7:56 a.m., with all lanes open at the toll plaza in Weehawken.
At the George Washington Bridge, eastbound traffic from I-95 continued to see backups. The lower level had a 30-minute delay, while the upper level’s delay reached 35 minutes from I-80 to the Alexander Hamilton Bridge, as reported at 7:55 a.m.
Southbound Garden State Parkway traffic remained heavy in Essex and Union counties. A five-mile backup from south of Exit 149 (CR 506) in Bloomfield to south of Exit 143C (NJ 124) in Irvington Township was followed by a separate two-mile delay through Cranford and Clark Townships.
Northbound Parkway drivers also faced a six-mile delay from south of Exit 147 (Clinton Avenue) in East Orange to Exit 153A (NJ 3) in Clifton as of 7:51 a.m.
Additional delays across key New Jersey routes
On NJ 3 westbound, traffic slowed from east of Bloomfield Avenue to east of US 46 in Clifton. All lanes remained open through the stretch.
Northbound NJ 18 experienced delays from the New Jersey Turnpike in East Brunswick to north of Paulus Boulevard in New Brunswick as of 7:45 a.m.
I-287 northbound traffic slowed between Exit 7 (South Randolphville Road) in Piscataway Township and Exit 12 (CR 623) in Franklin Township.
Southbound NJ 440 from north of CR 514/Woodbridge Avenue to just before Exit 2 (NJ 27) in Edison Township also saw increased travel times.
I-80 westbound commuters faced congestion from west of Exit 62 (Garden State Parkway) in Elmwood Park to Exit 60 (NJ 20) in Paterson.
Delays persist at Holland Tunnel and Route 208
Delays continued at the Holland Tunnel eastbound. As of 7:39 a.m., travel time to the New York side was 20 minutes from both New Jersey Turnpike Exit 14C and New Jersey 139 at Tonnelle Circle.
In Bergen County, Route 208 southbound was slow between Cedarhill Avenue in Wyckoff and Maple Avenue in Fair Lawn. No lane closures were reported.
