WASHINGTON, DC — A 26-year-old inmate at the District of Columbia Central Detention Facility has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing that took place last month inside the jail.

The incident occurred on May 12 at approximately 2:30 p.m., when First District officers responded to the 1900 block of D Street, Southeast, after a report of a stabbing inside the facility. Officers found an adult male unresponsive and suffering from critical stab wounds. DC Fire and EMS arrived but found no signs of life, and the victim was pronounced dead on the scene.

The decedent was identified as 29-year-old Carlos Shelley of Southeast DC.

On Tuesday, June 10, Marquise Jones, also in custody at the Central Detention Facility, was formally charged with Second Degree Murder while Armed (Knife) under a DC Superior Court booking order.

Authorities have not released details on the events leading up to the stabbing or whether a weapon was recovered. It is also unclear if the victim and suspect knew each other before the incident.

Investigation continues after deadly jail assault

The Metropolitan Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack. The homicide adds to a series of recent violent incidents within the correctional facility.

Officials have not disclosed where within the jail the stabbing occurred or whether additional security measures have been implemented since the fatal encounter.

Jones remains in custody as the case proceeds through the court system.
