MORNINGSIDE, Md. — A New York City man visiting friends in Prince George’s County became a millionaire after buying a scratch-off ticket that netted him a $1 million prize, Maryland Lottery officials announced Thursday.
The winning ticket, a $20 Millionaire’s Club scratch-off, was purchased at Discount Tobacco and 99 Cent Store located at 6701 Suitland Road in Morningside. The store will receive a $1,000 bonus for selling the top-prize winner.
The player, who frequently buys scratch-offs regardless of where he is, said he was simply playing for fun when the winning ticket changed his life. Prior to this win, his largest prize was under $500.
He claimed the prize on Thursday and said he plans to invest the money.
The ticket he purchased was the final remaining $1 million top prize from the Millionaire’s Club game, which launched in July 2024 with five total seven-figure jackpots.

All remaining prizes for the Millionaire’s Club game can still be claimed, but this marks the last of its million-dollar top-tier wins.
Lottery winners in Maryland have the option to remain anonymous, and no additional information about the man’s identity has been released.
The Maryland Lottery continues to encourage players to check all tickets and claim prizes before expiration dates, which are printed on the back of each ticket.
