One dead after van strikes stopped vehicle on Military Highway in Chesapeake

The late-night collision left one dead and sent three others to hospitals as police search for answers.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. — One person was killed late Tuesday night after a van collided with a stopped vehicle on the shoulder of Military Highway, Chesapeake Police said.

Officers responded to the crash around 11:21 p.m. in the 2600 block of Military Highway. According to investigators, a van traveling westbound struck a vehicle that had pulled over to the right shoulder of the road. At the time of the crash, two individuals were outside the stopped vehicle, and one person remained inside.

One of the individuals standing outside the vehicle was fatally struck and pronounced dead at the scene. The second person outside the vehicle, along with the occupant inside, were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Their conditions have not been released.

The driver of the van was also transported to a hospital. Police have not disclosed their condition.

The Chesapeake Police Crash Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation into the incident.

Investigation ongoing as officials work to notify family

Authorities have not released the name of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin.

No charges have been announced in connection with the crash, and no further details on the cause have been provided.

The incident occurred along a stretch of Military Highway where vehicles commonly pull over due to mechanical issues or emergencies. It is unclear why the stopped vehicle was on the shoulder at the time of the crash.

Officials have not confirmed whether speed, impairment, or weather were factors in the collision.
