Homeland Security slams sanctuary state enablers; New Jersey policies draw fire

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

Newark, NJ – Federal homeland security officials are blasting sanctuary state policies, warning that politicians who oppose Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) are putting federal agents — and the public — at risk.

In a forceful message on social media, the Department of Homeland Security declared that “sanctuary politicians have demonized federal law enforcement as the enemy—placing a target squarely on the backs of the brave men and women of ICE.”

The agency accused political leaders of using rhetoric that undermines enforcement efforts and endangers lives.

Although DHS did not mention names, New Jersey has been cited multiple times as an example of a state allegedly harboring criminal non-citizens under sanctuary protections. Governor Phil Murphy and Rep. Mikie Sherrill have both backed policies that limit cooperation between local authorities and ICE, positions that critics argue obstruct federal enforcement.

The issue resurfaced after a recent violent incident linked to anti-ICE rhetoric. A federal security alert pointed to what it described as “hateful, false, and bigoted attacks” against ICE, suggesting they may have influenced a man accused of opening fire from a rooftop.

The New York Post reported that while politicians such as Gavin Newsom, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, LaMonica McIver, and Brad Lander did not direct the act, their language “surely played a role” in shaping hostility toward ICE.

Rep. Sherrill’s voting record is testament to her opposition to several immigration enforcement measures. She voted against or did not support legislation, including the Secure the Border Act of 2023, the Detain and Deport Illegal Aliens Who Assault Cops Act, and the No Bailout for Sanctuary Cities Act. In each case, she rejected bills aimed at tightening enforcement or penalizing jurisdictions that shield undocumented immigrants.

Homeland Security officials maintain that policies restricting cooperation with ICE create “safe havens” for offenders who would otherwise face federal removal. Critics counter that such policies are designed to build trust between immigrant communities and local law enforcement.

With border enforcement and public safety at the center of the national debate, DHS’s pointed remarks have raised the stakes for politicians in states like New Jersey, where sanctuary policies remain in effect.

Key Points

  • DHS accused “sanctuary politicians” of endangering ICE officers and the public through hostile rhetoric.
  • New Jersey has been repeatedly flagged by federal officials for policies shielding undocumented immigrants.
  • Rep. Mikie Sherrill has consistently voted against immigration enforcement bills in Congress.

Overdevelopment in New Jersey a key focus on Ciattarelli-Sherrill Debate as Dem Calls for More High-Density Housing

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

NEWARK, NJ – Gubernatorial candidates Jack Ciattarelli and Mikie Sherrill sparred over climate change policy during a debate, offering starkly different views on how New Jersey should address global warming’s effect on urban communities of color and suburban communities dealing with the fallout of the state’s housing shortages and mandates on affordable housing.

Ciattarelli acknowledged the role of human activity in climate change but pushed for what he called a “rational transition” in the state’s energy future. He argued for natural gas, nuclear power in South Jersey, and solar as part of an “all-of-the-above approach,” while criticizing Democrats for supporting high-density housing projects across all municipalities.

In New Jersey, rural municipalities are being forced by Governor Phil Murphy and the Democrat run legislature and assembly to build thousands of new housing units in areas that quite frankly, cannot support thousands of new housing units, or the people that would live there.

“It’s not just in our urban areas where the climate change is affecting us,” Ciattarelli said, pointing to worsening flooding in suburban towns. He tied part of the problem to overdevelopment, saying, “If a town doesn’t have infrastructure, mass transit, opportunity for jobs, why are we putting more idling cars on the road?”

Sherrill drew on her experience as chair of the House environment subcommittee, warning that extreme weather and poor air quality are already hitting vulnerable communities hardest. She pointed to higher asthma rates in cities and linked climate change directly to worsening public health outcomes.

“We’ve seen flash flooding here in New Jersey killing several people throughout the state,” Sherrill said. “We need to act quickly to protect our environment but to also ensure that we have better health outcomes in this state.” She pledged to cut carbon emissions, expand renewable energy, and bring more power onto the grid to lower consumer costs.

Sherrill failed to acknowledge that the flash flooding in New Jersey urban areas is caused by overdevelopment. The water has nowhere to go.

Sherrill has also voiced support for increasing affordable housing in suburban areas through the development of large apartment projects. Critics, including Ciattarelli, argue that such projects contribute to flooding and the cutting down of forests, worsening environmental strain on already vulnerable communities.

The exchange highlighted a key divide between the candidates: Ciattarelli prioritizing incremental energy shifts and development limits, while Sherrill emphasized urgent emission cuts, public health protections, and expanded housing.

She also supports offshore wind and Green New Deal-style energy agendas that have driven up costs and diminished supply for New Jersey.

Key Points

  • Ciattarelli called for natural gas, nuclear, and solar as part of a gradual energy transition, while opposing high-density housing expansion.
  • Sherrill linked climate change to public health and vowed to cut emissions, expand renewable energy, and lower costs.
  • Sherrill also supports building large affordable housing projects in suburban areas, which critics say worsen flooding and deforestation.

The debate highlighted how climate and housing policy remain deeply intertwined in New Jersey’s governor’s race.

By Shore News Network

FRANKLIN TWP., NJ – A 38-year-old Somerset woman was arrested after her five-month-old daughter was discovered with life-threatening head injuries inside a Franklin Township hotel earlier this month, authorities said.

Police were called to a hotel on Cedar Grove Lane around 12:25 a.m. on Sept. 6 for a report of an injured infant. Officers arrived to find the baby lethargic and suffering from a large contusion on the back of her head. She was rushed to a local trauma center, where doctors determined she had sustained multiple skull fractures, head swelling and intracranial hemorrhages, investigators said.

Inside the same room, police found the child’s mother, Pamela Janiszak, unconscious on a bed. She was also transported to a hospital for treatment. Detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department and the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office launched a joint investigation.

Authorities said their findings pointed to Janiszak as being responsible for her daughter’s injuries. On Sept. 16, she was arrested without incident in Toms River. She has been charged with second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and was booked into Somerset County Jail pending a court hearing.

No updates were given on the infant’s current condition.

Trump Says Mikie Sherrill’s Policies Will “Destroy” New Jersey, America as New Poll Shows Tie With Ciattarelli

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

TRENTON, NJ – President Donald Trump has chimed in again on the New Jersey race for governor, showing more support for Republican Jack Ciattarelli early Thursday morning, praising him as the next governor of New Jersey just as a new poll shows the race between Ciattarelli and Democrat Mikie Sherrill locked in a dead heat.

A new Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey released this week found that both Ciattarelli and Sherrill have 43% support among likely voters, with 3% backing another candidate and 11% still undecided.

“Wow!!! A just out poll has Jack Ciattarelli essentially beating close to incompetent Mike Sherrill in the race for Governor of New Jersey,” Trump said in a statement. The president called Ciattarelli “tough on crime and cutting taxes” while blasting Sherrill for policies he claimed would “destroy America.”

Trump Says Mikie Sherrill's Policies Will "Destroy" New Jersey, America as New Poll Shows Tie With Ciattarelli
Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (Democrat-NJ)

The poll, conducted September 22–23 among 935 likely voters, highlights deep demographic divides shaping the 2025 race. Voters under 40 favor Sherrill by wide margins, with 58% supporting her compared to 24% for Ciattarelli. That advantage shrinks among voters in their 40s, where Sherrill leads 47% to 40%. But the race flips dramatically among voters over 50, where Ciattarelli leads 52% to 36%.

A gender gap is also apparent: women favor Sherrill 46% to 36%, while men back Ciattarelli 51% to 39%. Notably, 15% of women remain undecided, compared to just 6% of men.

Governor Phil Murphy’s approval rating has slipped to 35%, down five points since May, with 44% disapproving of his performance. Trump also sits underwater in the Garden State, with 41% approval and 51% disapproval.

Trump Says Mikie Sherrill's Policies Will "Destroy" New Jersey, America as New Poll Shows Tie With Ciattarelli

“Both President Trump and Governor Murphy are underwater among Jersey voters,” Emerson Polling’s executive director Spencer Kimball said. “Sherrill is trying to tie Ciattarelli to Trump at the national level, and Ciattarelli is trying to tie Sherrill to Murphy and the cost of living at the state level.”

Economic issues dominate voter concerns. A majority of respondents, 51%, said the economy is the top issue facing New Jersey, followed by threats to democracy (13%), housing affordability (11%), healthcare (6%), immigration policy (5%), and crime (5%).

The survey also found voters divided on whether the next governor should work with or stand up to Trump. Fifty-one percent want the governor to oppose Trump, while 49% prefer cooperation — a reversal from May, when a majority supported working with him.

With both candidates tied and a sizable share of voters undecided, the race for governor remains wide open heading into the fall campaign.

Key Points

  • Emerson College poll finds Ciattarelli and Sherrill tied at 43%, with 11% undecided.
  • Trump endorsed Ciattarelli, calling him “tough on crime and cutting taxes.”
  • Poll shows sharp divides by age and gender, with younger voters backing Sherrill and older voters favoring Ciattarelli.

The governor’s race in New Jersey is shaping up as one of the closest contests in the country.

Pleasant City man wins $50K prize on $1M Cashword scratch-off

Pleasant City, OH — A routine stop for drinks turned into a $50,000 payday for one Pleasant City man after he purchased a $1,000,000 Cashword scratch-off ticket on a whim.

Jason bought the $20 ticket at Buffalo Duchess #1210, located at 11830 Claypike Road, and later checked it at home using the Ohio Lottery’s mobile app. That’s when he realized he had hit the game’s second-tier prize worth $50,000.

After required federal and state tax withholdings, Jason will take home approximately $36,000. He said he plans to put the bulk of the winnings into savings while also paying down his mortgage.

The odds of winning the $50,000 prize in the $1,000,000 Cashword game are 1 in 666,666.

Buffalo Duchess, the retailer that sold the ticket, is recognized by the Ohio Lottery for being the point of sale of the winning scratch-off.

Mikie Sherrill campaign backpeddles on forced merger plan, just lawyers and transportation for Toms River, Lakewood, Jackson

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Mikie Sherrill, the far-left progressive Democrat candidate running for governor of New Jersey, is now backpedaling after claiming she wants to force smaller and financially delinquent school districts to merge if she wins in November.

“She is focused on reducing New Jerseyans’ property tax burden by working with school districts to expand shared services for administration and professional services, like transportation, purchasing, and attorneys.”

Sam Chan, deputy communications director for the Sherrill campaign

While Sherrill did not say which districts, she explained which districts would be targeted for a forced merger.

Sherrill said she would force school districts that are not putting enough money into their students, teachers, and facilities, but taking ‘a lot of money’ in property taxes.

It was clear that Sherrill was referring to districts like Lakewood Township, where the state has installed a state monitor and is now fighting the district over legal expenses and educational funding.

“So I’d start by offering, uh, the carrot to help the areas that want to consolidate. But when there are areas that are not putting enough money into ed to students into educators into the buildings and then they are taking a lot of money in property taxes and from the state level, then we’ll have to start to look at compulsory movements,” Sherrill said at the debate.

Today, Sherrill’s minions called Shore News Network, a “right-wing” publication to deflect from their candidate’s ill-chosen platform agenda item.

Instead, Sam Chan, said in situations like Lakewood, Toms River, and Jackson, they would force shared services only, such as transportation and attorneys. This statement comes as Lakewood is fighting to rehire an attorney whom the state feels is grossly overpaid.

The problem is that Mikie Sherrill is new to New Jersey and Sam Chan does not understand, and probably doesn’t care about the problems Toms River, Jackson, and Lakewood are experiencing due to Phil Murphy’s flawed S2 funding formula and the uniqueness of those problems.

There is no one-size-fits-all solution for the three towns to succeed.

“This is false information from a right-wing publication,” said Sam Chan, deputy communications director for the Sherrill campaign. “Mikie does not support consolidating the Lakewood, Brick, Jackson, and Toms River school districts. She is focused on reducing New Jerseyans’ property tax burden by working with school districts to expand shared services for administration and professional services, like transportation, purchasing, and attorneys.”

Merging anything between Toms River, Lakewood, and Jackson would be a nightmare scenario for public schools. Not transportation. Not attorneys.

By merging busing between the three districts, it would mean merging the Toms River Regional School District and Jackson School District’s transportation departments with the Lakewood Student Transportation Authority, which works with those districts to provide busing for private school students. The LTSA contracts with local school bus companies such as Jay’s Bus Service and others to manage the transportation of Lakewood based private school students who live in Toms River and Jackson.

Mikie Sherrill needs to reconsider her words and return to the table with a Plan C if she wants people in those towns to vote for her.

As for Jack Ciattarelli, his stance was clear and simple. He would support consolidation, but under New Jersey’s home rule, that consolidation would have to be driven by the local districts, not by the governor or the state of New Jersey.

Ciattarelli said that when a school district is failing, there needs to be school choice in the form of school vouchers and charter schools.

Bronx man sentenced to seven years for shaking infant daughter to death

Bronx, NY — A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to seven years in prison for the death of his three-month-old daughter, who was killed inside a Bronx homeless shelter and later left near the Major Deegan Expressway, prosecutors announced Tuesday.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark said Damion Comager was sentenced by Bronx Supreme Court Justice Audrey Stone after pleading guilty last month to first-degree manslaughter and concealment of a human corpse. His sentences, including five years of post-release supervision, will run concurrently.

According to the investigation, between May 10 and May 16, 2023, Comager violently shook his infant daughter, Genevieve, when she would not stop crying. The baby died as a result of the injuries. Prosecutors said Comager dressed the child, placed her in a stroller, then concealed her body in bags before leaving her near the West 161st Street overpass by Yankee Stadium.

Comager and the child’s mother, Ivana Paolozzi, were arrested on May 29, 2023. During questioning, Comager admitted to the killing and led detectives to where the body had been left. Paolozzi still faces charges of tampering with physical evidence, concealment of a human corpse, and obstructing governmental administration.

Flooding and Crashes Impact Thursday Morning Commute Across New Jersey

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

NEWARK, NJ – Drivers heading into the Thursday morning rush faced a tangle of delays across New Jersey, as flooding, crashes, disabled vehicles and heavy bridge traffic disrupted major routes statewide.

Flooding on Route 35 northbound just north of Route 88 in Point Pleasant Beach forced the closure of a ramp lane around 7:18 a.m., officials reported.

The Garden State Parkway saw multiple incidents, including a crash blocking the right shoulder at the northbound entrance ramp to Exit 154 in Clifton just after 8 a.m., and another crash with property damage at the southbound entrance ramp near Exit 139B in Union Township. Earlier, a southbound crash north of Exit 40 in Galloway Township left the left shoulder blocked. Rubbernecking delays stretched four miles between East Orange and Bloomfield on the northbound side by 8:13 a.m.

Elsewhere, I-80 eastbound near Exit 58 in Paterson had one of three lanes closed due to a disabled vehicle, while a crash on I-287 southbound near Exit 33 in Harding Township shut one of three lanes. A crash investigation on US 46 in Mount Olive Township kept all lanes closed in both directions since 5:58 a.m.

At the crossings, commuters into Manhattan faced steep delays. By 8:14 a.m., travel time reached 45 minutes on both the upper and lower levels of the George Washington Bridge. The Lincoln Tunnel also reported 40-minute waits at the center and south tubes from the New Jersey Turnpike Exit 16E to Manhattan.

Officials urged commuters to allow extra travel time as cleanup and investigations continued.

Brooklyn man charged in Bronx murder of 21-year-old found shot in the head

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

BRONX, NY – A 22-year-old Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Bronx resident earlier this month, officials said.

On September 11 at approximately 6:30 p.m., police took Desean Edwards, 22, of Beverly Road in Brooklyn, into custody in the 48th Precinct. Edwards has been charged with murder and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.

Jackson landlords to face new rental bureau, higher fees and stricter inspections

by Shore News Network September 25, 2025
By Shore News Network

Jackson Township, NJ – Landlords in Jackson will soon face tougher rules as the township launches a new Bureau of Housing Rentals, a unit created to enforce rental ordinances better and oversee the township’s growing number of rental units.

The Township Council passed the ordinance this summer, establishing the bureau and significantly tightening landlord registration requirements. Officials estimate up to $250,000 will be spent on expanded enforcement in 2026, but stress that none of the cost will fall on taxpayers. Instead, the program will be fully funded through landlord registration fees and fines.

Under the ordinance, all rental properties—except owner-occupied two-family homes—must undergo inspections at least once a year and before each new tenant moves in. Landlords must secure a certificate of occupancy before renting, with a $100 fee per inspection.

To streamline the process, Jackson will implement an inspection calendar, scheduling properties month by month according to street initials, starting with “A” and “B” in January and ending with “X,” “Y,” “Z,” and numbered streets in December.

Annual registration fees will also rise sharply. The current $125 charge will increase to $225 per property beginning January 1, 2026.

Landlords must now submit detailed paperwork when registering, including ownership information, managing agent and mortgage holder contacts, tenant lists, floor plans, background check status, copies of leases and deeds, and valid identification. While tenant data will be collected, officials said it will remain confidential.

Penalties for failing to comply are steep. Landlords who block inspections will be fined $250 per day, while those who fail to register face escalating fines: $500 for the first offense, $750 for the second, and $1,000 for each subsequent violation. Properties will also be barred from registration if municipal taxes or fees are not paid in full.

The township council said the new bureau is designed to increase safety and accountability in Jackson’s rental market while ensuring consistent enforcement across the township.

Key Points

  • Jackson Township will launch a Bureau of Housing Rentals in 2026, funded entirely by landlord fees and fines.
  • Annual landlord registration fees will rise from $125 to $225 per property on January 1, 2026.
  • Landlords face annual inspections, expanded paperwork requirements, and fines up to $1,000 for noncompliance.

Lancaster County jury convicts son of stabbing his 80-year-old father

Lancaster, PA — A West Lampeter Township man has been convicted of stabbing his father during a violent altercation that left the 80-year-old victim hospitalized after emergency surgery, prosecutors announced this month.

Following a three-day trial, a Lancaster County jury found 45-year-old Russell Woodrow Adams-Nicholls guilty on September 12 of aggravated assault, simple assault, and recklessly endangering another person. Judge Merill Spahn, who presided over the trial, will sentence Adams-Nicholls at a later date.

The charges stem from a December 10, 2024, attack inside the victim’s residence on the 600 block of Chatham Way in Manheim Township. Prosecutors said Adams-Nicholls repeatedly punched his father before stabbing him in the neck, causing severe blood loss that required life-saving surgery. The victim was intubated, sedated, and hospitalized for four days.

The victim testified that his son deliberately selected a knife and slashed him. Adams-Nicholls admitted to striking and swinging a knife but claimed he did not intend to cause such serious harm. He further testified that he washed the knife and put it away before leaving the home.

Prosecutors argued that Adams-Nicholls’ actions before and after the stabbing showed deliberate conduct, pointing to his admissions of long-standing frustration with his father. The jury deliberated for about two hours before returning a guilty verdict.

Manheim Township Police Detective Jonathan Martin filed the charges.
