Jacksonville Shooting Raises Questions on Media Coverage and Gun Control

by Conservative Times August 27, 2023
By Conservative Times

Jacksonville, FL – Three people were fatally shot in a Dollar General store this past Saturday by a man who had earlier been turned away from Edward Waters University, a historically Black institution. Authorities have described the attacker as a white male in his early 20s, and the shooting is being investigated as a targeted attack against Black individuals.

Before the incident at the Dollar General, the assailant was spotted on the campus of Edward Waters University where he refused to identify himself to on-campus security and was subsequently asked to leave. The school went into lockdown after the incident was reported to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.

Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters told CNN that the suspect had donned a bulletproof vest and mask after leaving the campus. Armed with an AR-15 style rifle and a handgun, the shooter opened fire outside the store before moving inside and killing three people. The assailant later turned the gun on himself.

CNN prominently featured the incident as a top story on their website, emphasizing the racial angle and using it to advocate for gun control measures. This has sparked criticism from those who argue that the network disproportionately focuses on racially motivated attacks while often overlooking daily instances of violence within Black communities.

The Jacksonville shooting is undoubtedly tragic and raises important issues about gun violence and racism. However, critics argue that the media’s selective focus might inadvertently distort the public’s perception of these complex issues, by not providing a comprehensive view of gun violence affecting various communities.

CNN’s prominent treatment of this incident contrasts with its less robust coverage of violence within Black communities. The argument is not to downplay the seriousness of racially motivated attacks but to question why certain stories receive more media attention than others. As the country grapples with ongoing issues related to gun control and racial inequality, it raises questions about how the media chooses to spotlight particular incidents, shaping the narrative and influencing public opinion.

Chris Christie’s Fall from Grace and Why New Jersey Hasn’t Forgiven Him

by Conservative Times August 27, 2023
By Conservative Times

Chris Christie, once a rising star in the Republican Party and a two-term Governor of New Jersey, has experienced a stunning reversal of fortune. Christie’s plummeting popularity at home has led many to question his viability as a presidential candidate. His ambitions for the presidency have been met with skepticism and even disdain from his own constituents. Here’s why New Jersey has lost its love for Chris Christie.

He was once sitting high on the wall, but all of the party’s kings and all of the party’s men might not be able to put Chris Christie back together again.

Bridgegate and a Damaged Reputation

One of the most damaging incidents during Christie’s tenure was the Bridgegate scandal, where lane closures on the George Washington Bridge were allegedly orchestrated as political retaliation against a mayor who didn’t endorse Christie’s re-election. The scandal eroded public trust and directly implicated members of his staff, although Christie himself was never formally charged.

Feuding with the Teachers Union

Christie’s relationship with New Jersey’s teachers was contentious from the start. His confrontations with the teachers’ union over pension reforms and education funding were public and often vitriolic. This won him no favors among the educators of New Jersey or the communities that felt the impact of his educational policies.

He also waged a similar fight with police and fire unions, overextending his hand in his crusade against public employees.

The Beach Incident

One of the images that New Jersey residents won’t soon forget is that of Christie lounging on Island Beach with his family while the beach was closed to the public due to a government shutdown. This incident, perceived as tone-deaf and selfish, sharply contrasted with the sacrifices that ordinary New Jersey residents had to make during the same period.

Ad: Save every day with Amazon Deals: Check out today's daily deals on Amazon.

Record Low Approval Ratings

Christie left office with a record low approval rating, hovering around 15%. This reflects not just policy disagreements but a deep-rooted disillusionment with his leadership. The fall was a far cry from his initial popularity and landslide re-election.

Presidential Ambitions Met with Boos

It’s no surprise, then, that his recent foray into the presidential race has been met with skepticism. Polling between 2-8% for the GOP nomination, Christie seems to be struggling to gain traction nationally. But it was his appearance at the first GOP presidential debate that really drove home the point: he was loudly booed by attendees, a clear sign that his tarnished reputation has followed him onto the national stage.

Chris Christie’s political narrative is one of a sharp ascent followed by an equally sharp descent. While his bluntness and candor once endeared him to voters, a series of scandals, confrontations, and poor judgments have soured his relationship with his own constituents. As he aims for the presidency, it’s clear that the disapproval from his home state has become a baggage too heavy to carry onto the national stage.

Phil Murphy Continues War Against the Second Amendment in New Jersey

by Phil Stilton August 27, 2023
By Phil Stilton

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has been a vocal advocate for gun control since his inauguration in 2018. Citing public safety concerns and gun violence statistics, Murphy has pursued a series of legislative measures aimed at tightening New Jersey’s already-strict gun laws. But for Second Amendment advocates and many in the state who oppose these measures, Murphy’s actions appear to be more than just a safety initiative—they see it as an ideological endeavor aimed at reducing, if not eliminating, the feasibility of gun ownership in the Garden State.

Murphy’s Legislative Moves

One of Governor Murphy’s first actions upon taking office was signing six anti-gun bills into law, extending the prohibitions on magazine capacities and strengthening background checks. He also made it mandatory to report lost or stolen firearms, raised the minimum age for buying firearms, and made it more difficult to obtain a permit to carry a handgun.

Another notable piece of legislation is the “red flag” law, which allows authorities to confiscate firearms from individuals deemed by a court to be a threat to themselves or others. While the intention may be to prevent tragedies before they happen, critics argue that this infringes upon due process rights and is a slippery slope to further restrictions.

Beyond New Jersey Borders

Governor Murphy hasn’t limited his gun control advocacy to the borders of New Jersey. He’s taken a regional approach, working with neighboring states like New York, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania to share information and collaborate on initiatives to combat gun violence. Murphy argues that these measures are necessary because guns used in crimes in New Jersey often come from other states.

Speculations About Future Actions

Given Murphy’s track record and the broad legislative moves he’s made so far, there’s reason to speculate that he might not be done. With each new law, it becomes increasingly difficult to own a gun in New Jersey, leading some to wonder if Murphy’s endgame is to make gun ownership so convoluted and costly that it becomes virtually impossible for the average citizen.

While no concrete proposals have been released, there are murmurs that further restrictions, such as mandatory insurance for gun owners or even more rigorous permit processes, could be on the horizon. These potential future actions could very well be a part of a broader progressive ideological agenda, aiming for a society with minimal, if any, firearms.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy’s focus on gun control is undeniable, and it seems to be a fundamental part of his tenure. While supporters praise his actions as necessary steps for public safety, critics argue that he is infringing on Second Amendment rights and steering the state toward an almost impossible landscape for gun ownership.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is clear: Murphy’s crackdown on gun ownership in New Jersey is far from over.

New York City in Decline: Echoes of the Past

by Adam Devine August 27, 2023
By Adam Devine

New York City has long been a symbol of American dreams, a melting pot of cultures, and a hub for innovation. However, there is a darker narrative that the city just can’t seem to shake off—the rise and fall of crime rates and social issues such as homelessness and drug addiction. The 1970s and 1980s were especially challenging times for New York City, marked by high crime rates, homelessness, and drug addiction. After years of improvement, it appears that the city may once again be descending into a period of difficulty, reminiscent of its past.

The Decline of the 1970s and 1980s

The economic downturn of the 1970s hit New York City hard, leading to a loss of jobs and an increase in poverty. This fueled a rise in crime, particularly violent crime and drug-related offenses. The city’s infrastructure was crumbling, graffiti marked subway cars, and Central Park became a no-go zone after dark. The government was close to bankruptcy, which led to a significant reduction in services, including the police force. Drug epidemics, particularly involving crack cocaine, exacerbated the situation, turning the city into a hub for drug trafficking and abuse.

Resurgence in the 1990s

The 1990s saw a turning point for New York City. Under Mayor Rudy Giuliani, the city implemented a range of policies aimed at reducing crime and improving the quality of life. The “broken windows” policing strategy targeted minor offenses to prevent larger crimes. There was also an effort to clean up Times Square, once a symbol of New York’s decline. By the 2000s, New York City had one of the lowest crime rates among major American cities, and it became a desirable place to live and work again.

The De Blasio and Adams Years

While crime rates remained relatively low during the early 2000s, there has been a noticeable uptick in recent years under the leadership of Mayors Bill de Blasio and Eric Adams. The issues seem to be multi-faceted: a rise in homelessness, an increase in drug-related crimes, and changes in law enforcement policies. The COVID-19 pandemic also strained the city’s resources, exacerbating existing issues.

Bill de Blasio’s tenure saw a rise in complaints about quality-of-life issues. His approach to policing faced criticism for being too lax, which many argue led to a rise in crime. Under Eric Adams, who took office in 2022, there has been an attempt to strike a balance between social reform and law enforcement. However, the challenges are immense.

Conclusion

The resurgence of crime and other social issues in New York City raises concerns that the progress made since the 1990s could be undone. Whether this is a temporary setback or an indicator of a larger issue remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that the city is at a crossroads, facing challenges that echo the difficulties of the 1970s and 1980s. This time, the collective memory of those challenging decades could serve as both a cautionary tale and a roadmap for finding solutions to today’s problems.
