Prominent Universities To Host Conference Denouncing Antisemitism Definition, ‘Settler Colonial State’ Of Israel

Kate Anderson on August 14, 2023

Two prominent universities are hosting a conference to discuss how the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism, which was drafted and supported by 31 countries in 2016, supports “repressive power and state violence,” according to the event’s website.

The Institute for the Critical Study of Zionism’s (ICSZ) conference “Battling the ‘IHRA definition’: Theory and Activism” is set to be held on Oct. 13 – 14 at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) and the New York University (NYU) School of Law, according to the event page. The conference will host six panels with a range of academics and activists who are committed to fighting against the IHRA definition.

“Sessions will explore the political, historical, and cultural conditions that enable IHRA campaigns, and share theoretical insights and organizing tools to support resistance,” the event page reads. “This event focuses on North American academia, government, and institutions while additionally mapping the ways IHRA is making incursions internationally.”

The IHRA definition was drafted and accepted in 2016, according to the State Department, and defines antisemitism as anything that creates “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews.”

“Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities,” the definition further elaborates. The IHRA also noted that antisemitism can manifest itself in the unfair “targeting of the state of Israel” beyond criticism that could be considered normal for any country.

Potential attendees and sponsors are asked to “confirm their agreement” with the ICSZ’s “points of unity,” according to the event page. The points include the belief that “Israel is a settler colonial state” just like the U.S. and a “racial project.”

Another point claims that academic research should not be neutral and argues that “neither studying or criticizing Zionism is anti-Jewish,” according to the website.

“The Institute’s research aims to interrogate and intervene in racism, colonialism, ethnic cleansing, and the appropriation of liberatory rhetoric by repressive political forces, among other harms,” the group explains.

One of the members of the planning collective for the conference is Rabab Abdulhadi, founding director and senior scholar of the Arab and Muslim Ethnicities and Diasporas Studies Program at San Francisco State University, according to the event page. Abdulhadi has been repeatedly criticized for allegedly antisemitic comments about Israel and Jews who support Zionism, and for inviting individuals with known associations with the terrorist groups the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad to speak on campus, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Both schools have come under public scrutiny for several antisemitic incidents over the past couple of years. In 2015, UCSC ranked number 5 in the nation for schools with the worst antisemitism problem despite having large Jewish populations, according to a report from the AMCHA Initiative, a Jewish advocacy organization.

In May, the UCSC chancellor released a statement condemning an antisemitic incident involving students who held a birthday party for Adolf Hitler, CNN reported. In 2022, students with the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter at NYU School of Law released a statement, arguing that Palestinians have a right to “resist their violent occupation … [and] are not obligated to engage in racialized ‘nonviolence’ theory,” according to a letter obtained by the Free Beacon.

NYU Law, UCSC, Abdulhadi and ICSZ did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Colleges Skirt Supreme Court Ruling Barring Race-Based Admissions By Asking About ‘Identity’

Brandon Poulter on August 14, 2023

Colleges and universities have started implementing questions about identity in admissions essays following the Supreme Court’s ban on race-based admissions, according to multiple admissions websites reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Essays from more than two dozen schools are asking questions about identity and “lived experience” and asking students to discuss how their life was shaped by those things, according to The New York Times. Last year these essays asked questions such as what students like to read and what volunteering students have done, but after the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action, that changed.

“Tell us about an aspect of your identity (e.g. race, gender, sexuality, religion, community, etc.) or a life experience that has shaped you as an individual and how that influenced what you’d like to pursue in college at Hopkins,” the Johns Hopkins admissions website reads.

“The essay helps us understand who you are and what you want out of your Hopkins experience. In 300-500 words, you’ll be asked to answer the following question in a way that demonstrates the unique perspective you might add to our community,” an archived version of Johns Hopkins’ admissions website captured before the decision reads.

Questions such as “How will the life experiences that shape who you are today enable you to contribute?” are asked on Harvard’s essays, according to the NYT.

“If schools are using ‘identity,’ ‘lived experience,’ or even zip codes as proxies for race, that’s unlawful. The Court allowed schools to consider whether personal experiences, like overcoming discrimination, created personal virtue, but it made clear that schools can’t use such things to discriminate on the sly,” GianCarlo Canaparo, senior legal fellow at the Heritage Foundation, told the DCNF.

“Nothing prohibits universities from considering an applicant’s discussion of how race affected the applicant’s life, so long as that discussion is concretely tied to a quality of character or unique ability that the particular applicant can contribute to the university,” Sarah Lawrence College’s admissions website reads, quoting Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts from the decision in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.

An archived version of the Sarah Lawrence College’s admissions website taken before the Supreme Court’s decision does not include this quote.

Sarah Lawrence College, Harvard and Johns Hopkins did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Biden Admin Urges Colleges To Continue To Racially Discriminate Following Supreme Court Ruling On Affirmative Action

Reagan Reese on August 14, 2023

The Biden administration urged colleges and universities on Monday to continue to racially discriminate in an effort to make their student body diverse, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on affirmative action.

The Supreme Court ruled in June that Harvard University and the University of North Carolina’s use of race-based admissions policies were unconstitutional, halting the practice across higher education institutions. The U.S. Department of Education’s (DOE) Office for Civil Rights and the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division releasedguidance encouraging universities to skirt the decision by weighing “ways a student’s background, including experiences linked to their race, have shaped their lives and the unique contributions they can make to campus.”

“For higher education to be an engine for equal opportunity, upward mobility, and global competitiveness, we need campus communities that reflect the beautiful diversity of our country,” U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “The resources issued by the Biden-Harris Administration today will provide college leaders with much-needed clarity on how they can lawfully promote and support diversity, and expand access to educational opportunity for all following the Supreme Court’s disappointing ruling on affirmative action.”

The guidance notes that through the admissions process, schools can consider how applicants’ backgrounds, such as their experiences with racial discrimination or the racial composition of their neighborhoods, can “position them to contribute to campus in unique ways.”

“For example, a university could consider an applicant’s explanation about what it means to him to be the first Black violinist in his city’s youth orchestra or an applicant’s account of overcoming prejudice when she transferred to a rural high school where she was the only student of South Asian descent,” the guidance states.

Institutions are encouraged to partner with K-12 schools to create pathway programs, and may give preferential treatment to students in the program during the admissions process if they were admitted to the program based on non-racial criteria, the guidance states.

Colleges and universities are able to target programs and areas in an effort to recruit students to contribute to a diverse student body, the guidance states. The guidance explains that schools can reach out directly to schools that predominately serve students of color and those by limited financial means in an effort to recruit applicants.

“By ensuring that the group of applicants they ultimately consider for admission includes a robust pool of talented students from underrepresented groups, institutions better position themselves to attain the student body diversity and related educational benefits they seek,” the guidance states.

The guidance also encourages universities to create race-affiliated groups, such as clubs or activities, to encourage students to “celebrate their shared identities, interests, and experiences.” If clubs, seminars or activities have a race-related theme, it must be open to all regardless of race, the guidance states.

“We stand ready to support institutions that recognize that such diversity is core to their commitment to excellence, and that pursue lawful steps to promote diversity and full inclusion,” the guidance states.

Russia’s Alrosa reports strong diamond sales despite sanctions

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) -Sanctions-hit Alrosa kept diamond sales in the first half of 2023 at the year-ago levels, the Russian company said on Monday as it reported financial results for the first time since Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

Efforts to reduce Russia’s revenue from diamond exports and to build on Washington’s existing sanctions on Alrosa, the world’s largest producer, have been subject to discussions among leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations.

Alrosa’s first-half revenue totalled 188.2 billion roubles ($1.9 billion), up 0.2% from January-June 2022, and up 3.5% from the same period of 2021. Net profit fell 35% year-on-year to 55.6 billion roubles.

“As of mid-2023, opportunistic diamond midstream participants have developed trade mechanisms to circumvent the impact of the restrictions, especially as it pertains to the trading of Russian diamonds in U.S. dollars,” diamond analyst Paul Zimnisky said.

In April 2022, the United States cut Alrosa off from its banking system and banned direct sales to the lucrative U.S. market. The European Union bought 1.4 billion euros ($1.5 billion) worth of Russian diamonds in 2022 as it has neither banned Russian diamond imports nor Alrosa.

As of now, once the Russian diamonds are cut and polished outside of Russia, they are considered originating from the nation that “transformed” them, Zimnisky added.

While some G7 countries have called for Russian diamond sanctions, others, including Belgium, have been concerned that they would divert trading to other centres and away from Antwerp, the world’s No. 1 one hub.

The G7 said in May it would continue working to restrict Russian diamonds trade, including through tracing technologies.

Zimnisky expects G7 to prepare a plan which would impact the global flow of Russian diamonds by late 2023 or early 2024.

“The diamond industry has had time to digest all of this, so while I do not expect a pending supply shock, I do see the way that the diamond supply chain works to be fundamentally transformed in the medium term,” he said.

IMF welcomes Argentina’s recent policy actions, commitment to safeguarding stability

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – The International Monetary Fund on Monday said it welcomed Argentine authorities’ recent policy actions and commitment to safeguarding stability, rebuild reserves and enhance fiscal order.

The IMF added that its board is set to meet on Aug. 23 to approve Argentina’s 5th and 6th reviews to “unlock the agreed disbursements.”

The Fund’s comments came after the Argentine government devalued its currency by nearly 18%, while the benchmark interest rate will be hiked 21 percentage points to 118%, as pressure built on Argentina’s financial markets following a primary election.

US ambassador to Russia visited WSJ journalist Gershkovich in jail

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Ambassador to Russia Lynne Tracy met with jailed Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich on Monday, a State Department spokesperson said, in her third such visit since his March detention on espionage charges he denies.

“Ambassador Tracy said that Evan continues to appear in good health and remains strong, despite his circumstances,” the spokesperson said, adding that it was Washington’s expectation that Moscow would provide continued consular access.

“Once again, the United States calls on the Russian Federation to immediately release Evan Gershkovich and also to release wrongfully detained U.S. citizen Paul Whelan,” the spokesperson added.

Russia has said Gershkovich was caught trying to obtain military secrets while on a trip to the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, but has provided no details supporting that assertion. The Wall Street Journal also denies the allegations.

The State Department has designated Gershkovich and Whelan as wrongfully detained and described the charges against both men as baseless. Whelan, a former U.S. Marine detained in Moscow in 2018, is serving a 16-year sentence in a Russian penal colony on espionage charges.

Russia has agreed in the past to high-profile prisoner exchanges with the United States, most recently last year when American basketball star Brittney Griner, sentenced in Russia on a drug charge, was exchanged for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms trafficker convicted in the United States.

But Moscow has said no exchange could take place in Gershkovich’s case until a verdict has been reached. No date has so far been set for his trial.

U.S.-Russian relations are at their lowest point in more than six decades following Russia’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

US SEC fines UK firm Crowe over audit of music streaming business

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

(Reuters) – The British audit firm Crowe UK, an executive and top auditor have agreed to pay nearly $800,000 to settle charges they falsely claimed to have properly audited a business that went public despite having little to no revenue, Wall Street’s top regulator announced on Monday.

The settled charges against the London-based audit firm, Crowe CEO Nigel Bostock, and senior auditor Matthew Stallabrass were announced nearly two years after the Securities and Exchange Commission reached a $38.8 million settlement with the purported music streaming business Akazoo, which allegedly defrauded investors out of tens of millions of dollars.

Following the audit, Akazoo went public through a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) in 2019, with financial statements falsely claiming $120 million in revenue for the prior year.

Crowe, Bostock and Stallabrass neither admitted nor denied the charges, according to the SEC. A lawyer representing the three referred queries to the company, which said it was pleased to have resolved the matter.

“Audit quality and its continuous improvement remain a key priority for the firm,” the company said in a statement.

According to the SEC, Crowe falsely claimed its staff were qualified to conduct an audit according to standards set by the U.S. Public Company Accounting Oversight Board and failed to exercise appropriate skepticism when presented with fabricated documents, among other failings.

Crowe has agreed to withdraw its PCAOB registration while Bostock and Stallabrass have agreed to be suspended from appearing before the SEC as accountants for minimum periods of five and two years, respectively, the SEC said.

Biden Admin Begins Wiping Away Billions Of Student Debt For Thousands Of Borrowers

Reagan Reese on August 14, 2023

The Biden administration is beginning to discharge $39 billion of student debt for thousands of borrowers on Monday, according to Politico.

In July, The Department of Education (DOE) announced that it would automatically forgive $39 billion of student loan debt for more than 804,000 borrowers who have been in repayments for more than 20 years, following a recent ruling by the Supreme Court that blocked the administration’s plan to grant forgiveness to nearly 40 million Americans. Borrowers who had applied for the most recent student loan relief had until Sunday to opt out of the potential discharge program, Politico reported.

The Supreme Court ruled 6-3 in June that the Secretary of Education did not have the executive power to cancel up to $10,000 in student loan debt for non-Pell Grant recipients and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients.

The DOE later announced that, in light of the Supreme Court’s ruling, the department would use the Higher Education Act and an expansion of income-driven repayment plans to forgive student loans. The new plan would slash payments for those making $32,800 or less annually, to $0.

The new plan would not penalize borrowers who missed their loan payments within the first year, beginning on Oct. 1.

Though the DOE estimates that the new plan will save borrowers an estimated $1,000 annually, the expansion of the income-driven repayment plans is estimated to cost taxpayers as much as $558.8 billion over the next ten years.

The Cato Institute and the Mackinac Center for Public Policy filed a lawsuit on Aug. 4 challenging the constitutionality of the Biden administration’s second attempt to forgive student loans.

The DOE did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Ford taps Apple exec to build high-margin digital services

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

By Nathan Gomes and Paul Lienert

(Reuters) -Ford Motor on Monday named former Apple executive Peter Stern as the president of its newly formed Ford Integrated Services unit to help build new high-margin digital and subscription services.

Stern, who previously oversaw Apple TV+, iCloud and Apple News+, will report to Ford CEO Jim Farley. In his new role, Stern will focus on integrating hardware, software and services across the company’s Ford Blue, Model e and Ford Pro units.

Like other U.S. automakers, Ford is looking to expand beyond its traditional wholesale-to-dealer business model and build recurring revenues from services connected to its vehicles, much as Apple has built on its hardware products.

Stern joins an executive team at Ford that includes another Apple alumnus, Doug Field, who is chief advanced product development and technology officer. Rival General Motors in May also hired a former Apple executive, Michael Abbott, to run its software business.

Farley, in a media briefing on Monday, said a new digital vehicle architecture, due out in 2025 with the arrival of Ford’s next-generation electric vehicles, will enable the development of new services for both retail and commercial customers.

“We’re not going to limit it to EVs – we’re going to put it on the F-150,” Ford’s best-selling pickup truck, Farley said.

Ford now has more than 550,000 paid software and services subscribers, more than 80% of them through the Ford Pro commercial unit.

That business is generating “hundreds of millions of dollars” in revenue, Farley said, “with enormous margins” of 50% and more.

Stern said Ford plans to create “bundles of services” that will provide “safer, more convenient and more productive experiences”.

“The basis for differentiation is shifting from the vehicles alone to the integration of hardware, software and services,” Stern said.

One of Stern’s first tasks is to help expand Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving package, which is being extended to more vehicles in the 2024 model year.

Ford will install BlueCruise hardware on another 500,000 vehicles next year, while giving customers the option of activating the subscription package at any point during ownership, rather than just at time of purchase.

The automaker plans to offer BlueCruise in a wider variety of Ford and Lincoln models, including F-150, F-150 Lightning, Expedition, Navigator, Nautilus and Corsair.

When Stern joined Apple in 2016, the company’s services included iCloud and Apple Music.

“When I left, (Apple) had over a billion customers subscriptions,” he said.

Agnelli family’s Exor buys $2.8 billion stake in Philips

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

By Toby Sterling and Bart H. Meijer

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) -Exor NV, the investment arm of Italy’s Agnelli family, has become the top investor in Philips by buying 15% of the healthcare technology group for about 2.6 billion euros ($2.8 billion), the companies said.

The deal is a welcome vote of confidence in the Dutch company, which is in the late stages of a huge product recall that began in 2021 and that knocked two thirds off its share price.

Philips shares rose 4.4% to 19.30 euros, while Exor dipped 0.3% to 81.22 euros. Philips fits two of the three sectors Exor targets in its investment strategy – healthcare and technology. The third sector is luxury.

Exor purchased its stake on the open market and may later raise it to up to 20%.

Under a relationship agreement with Philips, it will take a seat on the company’s supervisory board. Once proposed, Exor’s representative will attend meetings as an observer until they formally join the board, a person close to Exor said.

While not an activist investor, Exor aims to play an active role in supporting Philips’ strategy, the source said.

“Exor’s substantial investment underlines their confidence in Philips’ transformation into a healthcare technology company and its growth and value potential,” Philips Chairman Feike Sijbesma said in a statement.

Philips executives told a media call that Exor had been researching a possible investment since last year but the share purchases, which trigger disclosure requirements under Euronext rules, came together in only several days with the assistance of an unnamed investment bank.

Exor, led by John Elkann, 47, the leading figure among Italy’s Agnelli clan, still has some 2 billion euros left to invest after taking holdings in French healthcare group Institut Merieux and Italian hospital manager Lifenet.

Italy’s most prominent business family also owns a stake in luxury shoemaker Christian Louboutin.

New York-born Elkann chairs car companies Stellantis and Ferrari, both in Exor’s portfolio with other investments such as The Economist magazine and Italian soccer club Juventus.

ING analysts said Exor’s investments currently focus on listed firms because they are “more interesting from a valuation perspective” than private markets, where values have not yet caught up with “reality.”

Philips shares have rallied by 35% this year to close at 18.50 euros on Friday. That compares with more than 60 euros per share before the recall.

“On top of being a med-tech company, Philips is also perceived as a value stock, having been impacted by the Respironics recall saga,” ING said.

Philips has taken a 575 million euro provision for lawsuits related to the recall, and CEO Roy Jakobs said on Monday that Exor has not received any information beyond what has been made public about its ongoing talks with the U.S. Department of Justice over a settlement.

Philips last month reported core profit of 453 million euros and slightly upgraded financial targets for the full year.

Greenlight bought Onex and NET Power shares in Q2, added index hedges -letter

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Greenlight Capital made investments in alternative asset manager Onex Corp and clean energy company NET Power during the second quarter but also added portfolio protection through index hedges, the hedge fund told investors on Monday.

Greenlight, run by David Einhorn, told investors in a letter seen by Reuters on Monday that inflation may be “stickier” than the market is currently expecting.

“If we were ‘bearish’ until March and ‘neutral’ through June, we would now characterize ourselves as ‘worried,’ the letter said.

Greenlight, whose stock buys and musings on the economy are widely followed, gained 14.5% in the second quarter and was up 13.1% for the first half of 2023. The S&P 500 stock market gained 17% in the first half.

Italy PM Meloni takes ‘full responsibility’ for bank tax

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

MILAN (Reuters) -Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on Monday took “full responsibility” for last week’s shock decision to impose a one-off bank tax that has been blamed for causing lasting damage to her government’s credibility with financial markets.

In comments to Italian newspapers Corriere della Sera, la Repubblica and La Stampa, Meloni said the 40% levy had no punitive intent.

“I would do it again. Because I believe that the right things must be done…This is a decision that I took (on my own)”, she was quoted as saying by la Repubblica.

“It’s a sensitive issue and I take full responsibility for it.”

In a drive to shore up its political base, Italy’s conservative government unveiled the surprise decision late last Monday, only to backtrack in part by clarifying there was a cap on proceeds 24 hours later – and after having changed the threshold to apply the tax in the meantime.

The new tax targets a rise in profits banks have derived from higher rates.

Sources told Reuters when the measure was announced the Treasury expected to draw less than 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) from the tax. However, prior to the clarification on the cap, calculations pointed to much higher sums.

With Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti noticeably absent from the press conference to announce the tax, Meloni said he had been informed about the decision.

However, other government members had been kept in the dark because of the sensitivity of the matter, she said.

The government had toyed with the idea of taxing banks’ record profits from higher rates but appeared to have set it aside, and Rome’s muddled communication over the issue has caused alarm among international investors.

Asked about a veto posed by junior coalition partner Forza Italian on a potential alliance with France’s Marie Le Pen at next year’s EU parliamentary elections, she said it was too early to discuss any such moves.

“I don’t veto anyone, I don’t feel I have the authority to do that and in any case it’s premature”, she said.

Air Canada beats quarterly profit estimates, flags strong demand

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

(Reuters) – (This August 11 story has been corrected to clarify that the name on the website, Air Canada Pilots Association (ACPA), is no longer used as the group merged with ALPA and changes the name of the union in paragraph 5)

Air Canada reported a better-than-expected quarterly profit on Friday compared with a year-ago loss and sees solid passenger bookings into early 2024 as the country’s largest airline cashes in on strong international travel demand.

A rush by North American travelers to make up for lost time during the pandemic has bolstered earnings for legacy carriers, with international destinations enjoying especially high demand.

But North American carriers face pressure from higher labor costs, with pilots at U.S. legacy carriers nabbing steep pay increases in new contracts or tentative agreements.

Air Canada pilots anticipate sitting down for labor talks with the carrier in the next couple of weeks, a union official said. Their contract expires at the end of September.

Charlene Hudy, chair of a union group representing Air Canada pilots, said some of the Canadian airline’s pilots earn up to 300% less than their U.S. counterparts, depending on categories like seniority and type of aircraft.

“We have to be in the same ballpark as our American colleagues,” Hudy said in an interview.

Air Canada raised the lower end of its earlier 2023 guidance of C$3.5 billion to C$4 billion for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to C$3.75 billion.

Chief Executive Mike Rousseau said advanced passenger bookings remain solid for the balance of 2023 and into the first quarter of 2024.

Montreal-based Air Canada said it expects to grow available seat mile capacity for 2023 by 21% compared with a year earlier.

The carrier wants to fly more American passengers on non-direct international routes through stops at its Canadian hubs. So-called sixth freedom revenues, generated from carrying passengers from a second country to a third via a stop in a local hub, were the strongest in the second quarter that Air Canada has ever achieved, the carrier said.

For the quarter ended June 30, Air Canada reported adjusted net income of C$664 million ($493.97 million), or C$1.85 per diluted share. Analysts on average had expected adjusted net income of C$289.8 million or 68 Canadian cents a share according to data from Refinitiv.

For 2023, the carrier is now expecting costs per available seat mile (CASM) of about 0.5% to 1.5% above 2022 levels. In May, Air Canada said it expected CASM of about 0.5% to 2.5% below 2022 levels.

Analysis-Could Argentine radical libertarian Javier Milei win the presidency?

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

By Adam Jourdan, Eliana Raszewski and Anna-Catherine Brigida

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -Argentine far-right libertarian Javier Milei shocked the country on Sunday when he won the largest share of the vote in open primary elections. Now the big question is can he repeat the trick in October general elections when it matters?

The primary, which sees all candidates compete against one another, is a good gauge of how the general election will go. Milei won 30% of the vote, just ahead of the main conservative bloc on 28% and the center-left ruling Peronists on 27%.

The firebrand economist, whose boisterous campaign rallies draws comparisons to former U.S. leader Donald Trump, could turn the political status quo on its head in Argentina. He has pledged to shutter the central bank, dollarize the economy and sharply cut state spending.

Milei, however, faces a bigger challenge to win the Oct. 22 general election, or likely a run-off in November, with some voters casting protest votes on Sunday and record low turnout, which dented the more traditional parties.

Those trends could shift in the next two months.

Economy Minister Sergio Massa, the candidate for the governing Peronist coalition, said that the primary vote was just the “first half” of the election competition, using a soccer analogy in the country of greats Lionel Messi and Diego Maradona.

“We have the second half, extra time and then penalties. And we will be fighting until the last minute,” he said after the vote, which saw his coalition, the country’s top political force for decades, post its worst primary election result.

Analysts said that more people could come out to vote in October after 69.5% turnout in the primary. There is on average a 4 percentage point bump in voter numbers between the primaries and the general election, J.P. Morgan said in a note.

This suggests “higher upside for traditional parties in the general elections as compared to Milei, which we see closer to its ceiling in terms of vote intention”.

‘MILEI PRESIDENT!’

That potential challenge has done little to dampen spirits in Milei’s camp, delighted at far exceeding pollster estimates of around one-fifth of the vote in the primary.

“We can feel it! Milei president!”, his fans chanted as the elections results were announced.

The Together for Change conservative coalition pledged to unite behind its elected candidate Patricia Bullrich, a hard-line former security minister, though she said the vote had revealed that people wanted something new.

“This is a society that’s demands deep change, down to the roots,” she said, promising security, reasonable taxes and ending years of uncertainty and government red tape.

Julio Cobos, a lawmaker with Together for Change, agreed voters had expressed themselves in the polls and were demanding profound change, but the race was still very much open.

“The challenge is the final election which is October,” he said, adding the coalition had plenty of room to boost its performance if it stuck together.

“We hope to grow and win in the next elections. It is important that the leaders show up together, unify proposals, speeches, and present as a good team,” he said.

Beyond doubt is the fact that the race, previously seen as between the two main parties with Milei a dark horse likely grabbing an notable third place, is now a true three-way fight. Each of the top candidates could make the run-off.

“The election race is now divided in three, which it wasn’t before,” said Alejandro Corbacho, director of the political science program at Argentine university UCEMA.

“It is clear that there is a lot of anger. People are very angry with the political classes.”

Jared Lou, a portfolio manager at William Blair Investment Management, said that Milei had made himself the “front-runner” but there was lots of uncertainty.

“One factor that may help Milei in the presidential elections is that he’s an outsider and voters are frustrated,” he said. Lou added his views on promoting gun ownership, anti- abortion policies and dollarizing the economy – something most Argentines oppose – could ultimately put off some voters.

A dollar-peso peg introduced in the 1990s brought short-term benefits but ended in an ugly devaluation.

“Many of the policies he has campaigned on are viewed as fairly radical by the electorate.”

European shares gain on healthcare boost; miners, energy lag

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

By Shashwat Chauhan

(Reuters) -European shares closed higher on Monday, rebounding from a near one-week low, as gains in retail and healthcare outpaced the fall in miners and energy, both bruised by concerns over China’s embattled property sector.

The pan-European STOXX 600 closed the day 0.2% higher, bouncing back from a more than 1% decline on Friday.

The healthcare sector gained 0.3%, with Philips jumping 4.4% after Dutch investment firm Exor NV took a 15% stake in the company. Exor dipped 0.3%.

The retail sector index was the top gainer, up 0.8%, with B&M European Retail gaining 3% following a Deutsche Bank price target raise.

However, miners and energy stocks led losses tracking lower crude oil and base metal prices on deteriorating demand outlook in top consumer China, reinforced by debt problems in its property sector.

Reuters reported Country Garden is seeking to delay payment on a private onshore bond for the first time after suspending trading in 11 onshore bonds.

The European basic resources index ended 1.5% lower, touching an over 10-month low intraday, while the energy sector closed 0.8% down.

Other China-exposed sectors like luxury lost 0.1%, while lenders Prudential, HSBC Holdings and Standard Chartered shed between 0.5% and 0.7%.

“The China story’s negative for European markets, especially for the more export-oriented ones such as Germany, as China is seen as the key export market,” said Andrea Cicione, head of research at GlobalData.TSLombard.

“We might be nearing the point where the bad news stops having an effect and maybe the government provides the kind of response that the market feels comfortable with… However, we don’t expect a large-scale stimulus.”

The benchmark STOXX 600 has come off its over one-year highs hit last month as ballooning growth concerns in China and sharp movements in bond yields have pressured equities.

Commodity-heavy European bourses also lagged, with UK’s FTSE 100 and Norway’s Oslo SE All-Share Index falling 0.2% and 0.3%, respectively.

Geopolitical issues also dented investor sentiment after a Russian warship fired warning shots on a cargo ship in the Black Sea over the weekend, with Ukraine condemning the move and calling for decisive countermeasures by the international community.

Economic data due this week include a flash estimate of euro-zone second-quarter GDP, fresh euro-zone inflation and British consumer prices.

Among individual movers, German dialysis specialist Fresenius Medical Care (FMC) dropped 5.1% to the bottom of the STOXX 600 following a UBS downgrade to “sell” from “neutral”.

Embraer optimistic about quarters ahead as Q2 profit blows past estimates

by Reuters August 14, 2023
By Reuters

By Gabriel Araujo

SAO PAULO (Reuters) -Brazilian planemaker Embraer on Monday shot past market estimates for second-quarter results, with its chief executive voicing optimism about upcoming quarters for the company.

Francisco Gomes Neto said in an interview there is a “good chance” Embraer will deliver 80 or more commercial aircraft next year, up from a higher-end forecast of 70 in 2023, and return to a level of 100 or more by 2025, or 2026.

The world’s third-largest plane manufacturer – after Airbus and Boeing – last topped 100 deliveries in 2017, before hitting snags in an attempted deal with Boeing and then COVID-19-related hold-ups.

“Despite the supply chain challenges, we are very optimistic about this year after a good Q2,” Gomes Neto said. “We expect Q3 to be good as well and an even better Q4, with new deals in the commercial and defense units expected in the second half.”

The Brazilian company had previously disclosed deliveries of 47 aircraft in the quarter, seen as a positive sign by analysts who believe Embraer will meet its target this year of delivering up to 200 jets overall – both commercial and business.

“We’re working hard so next year we can better spread out production and deliveries throughout the year, which will further improve the company’s performance,” Gomes Neto added.

He said the company has already signed a deal with an undisclosed client that will increase its backlog by $700 million in the third quarter.

Shares in Embraer rose as much as 5.7% immediately after the earnings report before paring gains in a volatile session. Brazil’s benchmark stock index Bovespa dropped more than 1%.

The planemaker reported a 25% increase in second quarter adjusted net profit to $57.9 million, more than double the $24.3 million forecast by analysts polled by Refinitiv.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) came in at $148.9 million, up 20% from the previous year and above the market consensus of $116.2 million.

JPMorgan analysts highlighted its EBITDA margin of 11.5%, up 10 percentage points quarter-on-quarter, as particularly strong.

Embraer maintained its outlook for the year, with net revenue forecast to rise by as much as 27% to between $5.2 billion and $5.7 billion.

Embraer’s quarterly figures and backlog indicate “strong results for the year,” analysts at BTG Pactual said.
