The deceased mammal, which was first spotted around 5 p.m., remained on the beach Sunday morning as authorities cordoned off portions of the area.

The appearance of the dead whale at Takanassee Beach prompted an immediate response from police, who blocked off sections of the beach to investigate the situation. That area of the beach will remain closed until the whale has been disposed of.

Nigerian delegation says Niger junta is open to diplomacy

by Reuters August 13, 2023
By Reuters

By Felix Onuah and Sali Samb

ABUJA/CONAKRY (Reuters) -Coup leaders in Niger are open to diplomacy to resolve a standoff with West Africa’s regional bloc, a group of senior Nigerian Islamic scholars said on Sunday after meeting the junta in Niamey.

Their visit comes as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) explores its options to restore civilian rule in Niger, including potential military intervention, following the July 26 ouster of President Mohamed Bazoum – the seventh coup in West and Central Africa in three years.

In a sign the bloc is still pushing for a peaceful resolution, ECOWAS chairman and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu approved Saturday’s mission to Niamey by the delegation of Islamic scholars, who had vowed to promote dialogue.

The group’s meeting with junta leader General Abdourahamane Tiani lasted several hours, said Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau, who led the delegation.

“He said their doors were open to explore diplomacy and peace in resolving the matter,” Lau said in a statement on Sunday.

Ad: Save every day with Amazon Deals: Check out today's daily deals on Amazon.

Tiani reportedly emphasised the historic ties between Niger and Nigeria, saying the countries “were not only neighbours but brothers and sisters who should resolve issues amicably”.

There was no immediate comment from the junta on the meeting, but Tiani’s reported comments are one of few recent signs he is open to negotiation.

The coup leaders’ previous rebuffs of diplomatic efforts by ECOWAS, the United States and others had raised the spectre of further conflict in the impoverished Sahel region of West Africa, which is already dealing with a deadly Islamist insurgency.

With diplomacy faltering last week, ECOWAS activated a standby military force it said would be deployed as a last resort if talks failed.

For now, the bloc is pursuing efforts for further negotiations. On Saturday, the bloc’s parliament said it would ask Tinubu, who holds the bloc’s revolving chairmanship, to get his permission to go to Niger, its spokesperson said.

SHORING UP SUPPORT

Any military intervention by the bloc could further strain regional ties as juntas in Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea have voiced support for Niger’s new military authorities.

On Saturday, Tiani sent a delegation, led by his defence chief General Moussa Salaou Barmou, to the Guinean capital Conakry to thank leaders there for their support – a sign of the junta’s desire to affirm alliances as it stands up to regional and other powers.

“We are pan-African. When our people have problems, we are always present, and we will always be there,” Guinea’s interim president, Mamady Doumbouya, said at the meeting, according to a video shared late on Saturday night by the presidency.

In the footage, Doumbouya – who led a coup in Guinea in September 2021 – did not say whether Conakry’s support for the Niger junta would include military backing if ECOWAS decided to use military force. Mali and Burkina Faso have already said they would help defend Niger.

At stake is not just the fate of Niger – a major uranium producer and Western ally in the fight against the Islamists – but also the influence of rival global powers with strategic interests in the region.

U.S., French, German and Italian troops are stationed in Niger, in a region where local affiliates of al Qaeda and Islamic State have killed thousands and displaced millions.

Meanwhile, Russian influence has grown as insecurity increases, democracy erodes, and leaders seek new partners to restore order.

Western powers fear Russia’s clout could increase if the junta in Niger follows Mali and Burkina Faso, which ejected the troops of former colonial power France after coups in those countries.

Nestle Cookie Dough Recalled Over Wood Splinters

by Jessica Woods August 13, 2023
By Jessica Woods

If you bought a Nestle Chocolate Chip Chip Cookie Dough Bar from your favorite New Jersey supermarket in the past few days, you might want to pay close attention. Nestle has reported some of the packages have wood splinters in them, which could cause serious injury if swallowed.

Nestlé is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough “break and bake” Bar (16.5 oz) products. This action is being taken due to the potential presence of wood fragments in two specific batches produced on April 24 and 25, 2023.

The recalled product details are as follows:

  • Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bar (16.5 oz)
  • Batch Numbers: 311457531K and 311557534K
  • Corresponding Best By Dates: 8/22/23 and 10/23/23

This recall is isolated to the mentioned batches and does not involve any other products, including other varieties of refrigerated cookie dough in “break and bake” bars, rolls, or tubs, or edible cookie dough.

The recall was prompted after a small number of consumers contacted Nestlé about the issue. Although no illnesses or injuries have been reported, the company has decided to proceed with this recall out of an abundance of caution.

Consumers who have purchased the affected product with the specific batch codes should not prepare or consume the product. They should return it to the retailer where it was purchased for a replacement or refund. For further support or information, please contact Nestlé at (800) 681-1678 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. EST.

Nestlé is working closely with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) on this voluntary recall and will cooperate fully with their investigation. The company has stated that they are confident this is an isolated issue and have already taken actions to address it.

In a statement, Nestlé emphasized, “The quality, safety, and integrity of our products remain our number one priority. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this action represents to both our consumers and retail customers.”

This recall serves as a reminder to consumers to check their pantries and refrigerators for this specific product and act accordingly. Nestlé’s prompt response demonstrates their commitment to consumer safety and upholding the quality standards that they are known for.

Kosher Ice Cream Recalled After Deadly Bacteria Found

by Jessica Woods August 13, 2023
By Jessica Woods

LAKEWOOD, NJ — Real Kosher Ice Cream of Brooklyn, NY, has issued an urgent recall of its Soft Serve On The Go cups in multiple flavors. The recall was prompted by the discovery of Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacteria, in some products. With a significant population of residents in Ocean County who adhere to kosher diets, the recall has triggered immediate concern.

The contamination of Listeria monocytogenes can lead to severe infections, particularly in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms like fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. However, for pregnant women, Listeria infection can result in miscarriages and stillbirths.

The recall includes the following products packaged in 8 fl oz., clear plastic cups, with all products produced up to August 4, 2023, being recalled:

  • Soft Serve on the go Vanilla Chocolate: UPC 0-91404-15129-0
  • Soft Serve on the go Razzle: UPC 0-91404-15133-7
  • Soft Serve on the go Caramel: UPC 0-91404-15131-3
  • Soft Serve on the go Parve Vanilla Chocolate: UPC 0-91404-15113-9
  • Soft Serve on the go Sorbet Strawberry Mango: UPC 0-91404-15128-3
  • Soft Serve Lite Peanut Butter: UPC 0-91404-15285-3

These products were distributed in various states, including New Jersey, and reached consumers through canteens, grocery stores, and convenience stores.

To date, two cases of illness related to this outbreak have been reported in New York and Pennsylvania, leading to hospitalization. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture detected the contamination after testing a sample that tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

Real Kosher Ice Cream has ceased production and distribution of the affected products as both the FDA and the company continue their investigation into the source of the contamination.

Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly urged to discontinue consumption immediately. The product should be disposed of or returned to the store of purchase for a full credit. Questions regarding the recall can be directed to the Soft Serve on the Go team at 845-668-4346 or [email protected], Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm EST.

Residents of Ocean County, and those observing a kosher diet, should be vigilant and take immediate action to ensure safety. The local authorities are working diligently to remove the affected products from the shelves and are urging residents to spread the word.

‘I Make Love To Men Daily’: NY Post Reveals Contents Of Salacious Obama Letter To Ex-Girlfriend

‘I Make Love To Men Daily’: NY Post Reveals Contents Of Salacious Obama Letter To Ex-Girlfriend

Katelynn Richardson on August 12, 2023

Former President Barack Obama wrote in a letter to his ex-girlfriend, saying over 40 years ago that he “make[s] love to men daily, but in the imagination,” according to the New York Post.

Obama, 21 at the time, wrote to ex-girlfriend Alex McNear in November 1982 that his “mind is androgynous,” according to the letter the NY Post obtained from a friend of Obama biographer and Pulitzer Prize-winning historian David Garrow. Garrow recently discussed his 2017 biography on the former president, “Rising Star: The Making of Barack Obama,” in an a Tablet Magazine interview, where he revealed how he obtained the letter.

“In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life,” Obama wrote to McNear, according to the NY Post. “You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination.”

“My mind is androgynous to a great extent and I hope to make it more so until I can think in terms of people, not women as opposed to men. But, in returning to the body, I see that I have been made a man, and physically in life, I choose to accept that contingency,” the letter says, per the NY Post.

McNear initially redacted one paragraph of the letter “about homosexuality” when she gave it to Garrow for use in the book, though she sold the original letter around the time of the biography’s publication, enabling it to end up at Emory University, Garrow told Tablet in the Aug. 2 interview.

Garrow told Tablet he sent his friend Harvey Klehr to the Emory archives to copy the letter, which the university would not allow him to photograph. The NY Post says Klehr provided it with a copy of the letter’s contents

“I’m a historian, not a psychologist, but I think it’s ‘public record’ news that a (vast?) majority of human beings have sexual fantasies!” Garrow told the Post.

Emory University’s collection of nine of Obama’s letters span from 1982 to 1984, after he transferred to Columbia University, according to the university website. The letters “reveal the search of a young man for meaning and identity” Emory University Stuart A. Rose Manuscript, Archives and Rare Book Library Director Rosemary Magee said in a statement when the collection was announced in 2017.

Sluggish US earnings may need pick-me-up to support 2023 stock rally

by Reuters August 13, 2023
By Reuters

By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK (Reuters) -Stock investors have been satisfied by middling U.S. corporate results so far this year but they might not be so easy to please for the rest of 2023.

As the second-quarter earnings season winds down, S&P 500 results are presenting a mixed picture, with companies beating analysts’ profit expectations at the highest rate in nearly two years even as revenue beats dropped to the lowest since early 2020.

Investors appear content with that, for now. The S&P 500 has edged higher since earnings season began in July, with the benchmark index up 16% in 2023. But expectations call for corporate profits to pick up as the U.S. economy has so far defied recession fears, and investors may be far less forgiving if companies fail to deliver later this year, given the jump in equity valuations.

“Markets are expecting earnings to … deliver above and beyond where they have been,” said Eric Freedman, chief investment officer at U.S. Bank Asset Management. “This is a market that has moved up in anticipation of earnings that we have not quite gotten yet.”

Overall, second-quarter earnings are expected to have fallen 3.8% from a year earlier, Refinitiv IBES data showed. That decline follows a 0.1% rise in the first quarter and a 3.2% drop in the fourth quarter of last year.

Results are expected to improve, however. Third-quarter S&P 500 earnings are seen rising 1.3% on a year-over-year basis, according to Refinitiv, before a 9.7% fourth-quarter earnings rise and a 11.9% full-year increase in 2024.

Meanwhile, the S&P 500 has become more richly valued. The index was trading at 19.1 times forward 12-month earnings estimates as of Thursday, compared to its long-term average of 15.6 times, according to Refinitiv Datastream. The P/E ratio ended 2022 at just below 17 times.

This year’s valuation expansion accounted for 86% of the S&P 500’s year-to-date return through July, with the rest of the market’s boost coming from positive changes to earnings estimates, an analysis by Credit Suisse equity strategists showed.

“At this point, valuations have run ahead of the fundamentals and so companies now have to prove that they can generate earnings growth,” said Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise Financial.

Q2 RESULTS

With 91% of S&P 500 companies having reported second-quarter results, 78.7% posted earnings above analysts’ expectations, according to Refinitiv IBES. In aggregate, companies are reporting earnings 7.7% above expectations, up from a long-term average of 4.1% above estimates. Both the beat rate and surprise factor are coming in at their highest rates since the third quarter of 2021.

However, for revenue, only 62.9% of companies have topped expectations – the lowest beat rate since the first quarter of 2020.

Stock reaction to earnings results has also been tepid, with share prices posting weaker responses to both beats and misses than the average over the past five years, analyst Julian Emanuel of Evercore ISI said. The average stock fell 0.6% after results in the second quarter, Emanuel said in a note on Thursday.

“We went from a market that is saying, ‘Earnings had to back it up’ to ‘Thankfully earnings didn’t screw this up,'” said John Lynch, chief investment officer for Comerica Wealth Management. “That just gets us into a more expensive realm.”

Meanwhile, there have also been some high profile disappointments, with Apple shares dropping 4.8% after the iPhone maker’s weak sales forecast. Other megacap companies, such as Amazon and Alphabet, have seen a positive investor response to their reports.

Companies reporting results next week include key retailers, such as Walmart and Home Depot, while the release of monthly retail sales on Tuesday also could influence markets.

While investors generally have turned more positive about the economic outlook, some still are wary of a recession stemming from the delayed impact of higher interest rates, as indicators such as the Treasury yield curve are still flashing warning signs. Such a downturn could severely change the prospects for corporate earnings and potentially weigh on valuations. During recessions, earnings fall at a 24% annual rate on average, according to Ned Davis Research. “There is optimism, but I still wonder going into next year, are we too optimistic, from a consensus standpoint,” said Comerica’s Lynch. “Just because we didn’t have a recession this year, that yield curve continues to point to one.”

China State Council issues guidelines in bid to increase foreign investment

by Reuters August 13, 2023
By Reuters

By Andrew Hayley and Ethan Wang

BEIJING (Reuters) -China’s State Council issued guidelines on Sunday that it said would further optimize the country’s foreign investment environment and attract more foreign investment.

The State Council said in a document containing 24 guidelines that authorities should increase protection of the rights and interests of foreign investors, including strengthening enforcement of intellectual property rights.

The document also announced guidelines to increase fiscal support and tax incentives for foreign-invested enterprises, such as temporarily exempting withholding income tax for foreign investors’ reinvestment of their profits into China.

The State Council said it would explore a “convenient and secure management mechanism” for cross-border data flows. The proposal comes amid tensions between authorities and international enterprises, including global accounting firms, over data security.

China has sought to court foreign capital as its economic recovery from the COVID pandemic slows in the face of weak export demand from key trade partners and ongoing tumult in the country’s property market.

However, Beijing has so far struggled to attract foreign enterprises and investors, which are wary of political risk in an environment that increasingly prioritises national security measures, and concerned about the impact of deteriorating relations between China and many Western countries on their operations.

Analysis-Trump heading for Republican ‘coronation’ as 2024 rivals struggle to stop him

by Reuters August 13, 2023
By Reuters

By Tim Reid

DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) – As Florida Governor Ron DeSantis flipped pork chops in front of the cameras at the Iowa State Fair on Saturday, a plane appeared in the broiling blue sky.

It was Donald Trump’s Boeing 757 private jet. It circled the fairgrounds, and thousands in the crowd looked up and went wild, cheering for the Republican former president.

An hour later, Trump arrived in a motorcade from nearby Des Moines airport to a rock-star reception, stealing DeSantis’ thunder and reducing his nearest rival for the Republican presidential nomination to a bit-part player at one of the biggest political events on the U.S. political calendar.

It was a moment that epitomized the state of the 2024 Republican presidential nominating race: Trump is far ahead in national polling, eclipsing Florida’s governor and the rest of the field, who have so far been at a loss over how to narrow that gap.

The Iowa State Fair is a political must for aspiring presidential candidates in the Midwestern state that kicks off the Republican nominating contest in January. But with Trump leading DeSantis by 34 percentage points among likely Republican primary voters in an Aug. 3 Reuters/Ipsos poll, and the rest of the field languishing in single digits, the fair this year had the air of a coronation rather than a beauty pageant.

Despite Trump’s legal problems – he has been indicted three times this year and could be indicted a fourth time in Georgia this week – he holds one of the biggest primary polling leads in U.S. electoral history. No candidate in modern history has had such a big lead in a contested primary and gone on to lose the nomination.

Meanwhile, DeSantis has had two staff shake-ups in the past three weeks and has been sinking in the polls as he desperately tries to recalibrate his campaign.

As Trump walked from the pork chop tent to the Steer N’ Stein bar to make a speech, flocked by supporters chanting, “We love you Trump!,” a reporter asked him about DeSantis.

“He’s doing very, very poorly in the polls. He really should leave the race,” Trump said.

Sarah Longwell, a Republican strategist who opposes Trump’s nomination, has been holding focus groups with Republican voters all year. During the last two she held, in the past two weeks, not a single person even mentioned DeSantis.

When asked directly about the Florida governor at the recent focus groups, one voter called him “sneaky.” Another dismissed him as just “another regular politician.” A third said he was part of the “deep state,” a term often used by conspiracy theorists to refer to people in government they believe are working clandestinely to manipulate national policy.

“DeSantis is in a death spiral,” Longwell said.

Bryan Griffin, a spokesperson for DeSantis, told Reuters the Republican contest was between Trump and DeSantis, who “is the only candidate in the race who can beat Joe Biden and implement the agenda we need to reverse this country’s decline and revive its future.”

NARROWING TRUMP’S LEAD

As for the rest of the Republican field, Longwell said, it’s hard to see how any of them might catch Trump.

There is a narrow path for somebody to beat the former president, “but they have to generate excitement and come first or second in Iowa to make it a two-person race and persuade people they are more electable,” she said.

At the state fair, that uphill struggle to catch up to Trump was on display amid the 90-degree Fahrenheit (32 Celsius) heat, pork chops on a stick, deep-fried, cream-filled Twinkies; foot-long corn dogs; and a staple of the event: a life-size cow sculpted out of butter.

In a dozen voter interviews, Reuters found that most liked DeSantis – but not enough to back him over Trump.

“I like what DeSantis has done in Florida, but I want Trump, a businessman, running the country, I want Trump to get a second term. He was great for our economy; he’ll cut down the size of government. DeSantis can run next time around,” said George Knuckey, 67.

Asked about DeSantis, Carla Wilkinson, 68, said: “Hell no. He’s OK in Florida, but I don’t think he’s presidential material. I’m Trump all the way.”

On Saturday, tech billionaire Vivek Ramaswamy, former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and DeSantis all appeared for interviews with Iowa’s Republican governor, Kim Reynolds.

They were greeted by about 200 people politely and warmly, although DeSantis had to speak over a half dozen women’s rights protesters blowing whistles and under a plane flying a banner that declared: “Be Likeable, Ron!”

The Florida governor has a reputation for being a wooden campaigner.

When Trump arrived, with Secret Service agents and sniffer dogs everywhere, his crowds were huge, with about 2,000 people waiting to see him.

Chris Jackson, a public opinion researcher at polling firm Ipsos, which conducts polls for Reuters and other media organizations, said at present the primary resembles a “coronation” for Trump.

But Jackson cautioned that can still change, especially as Trump’s legal problems mount. Primary voters could still worry about Trump’s electability in a general election, Jackson said, “and wake up and maybe think the emperor has no clothes.”
