Man caught with stolen plates at Stafford Wawa charged with larceny and forgery

STAFFORD, VA — A man displaying stolen license plates on his car was stopped outside a Wawa Tuesday morning and admitted he knew the tags didn’t belong on his vehicle, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.

At 11:07 a.m., Deputy M.N. Sayegh spotted a Mazda parked at the Wawa located at 860 Richmond Highway and recognized that the license plates had been reported stolen. With backup from First Sergeant M.R. Flick, the driver was detained for questioning.

During the investigation, the driver reportedly admitted he knew the license plates were registered to a Chevrolet and not the Mazda he was driving. Authorities charged him with larceny and forging a license plate.

The man was brought before a magistrate and released on personal recognizance.

Two huskies need rescue from New Jersey shelter

Help needed for two huskies at Northern Ocean County Animal Facility

OCEAN COUNTY, NJ — Two young huskies currently housed at the Northern Ocean County Animal Facility are in urgent need of placement through a 501(c)(3) rescue group or experienced foster home, according to a recent plea from the shelter’s supporters.

The dogs, Lassie and Ivan, are both under 50 pounds and described as dog-friendly, with no issues around cats. However, each has displayed resource-guarding behavior — Lassie with rawhide treats and Ivan with food — making them unsuitable for standard shelter environments without additional support or behavioral guidance.

Lassie, approximately four years old, is a petite female who has shown good behavior around other dogs and cats but becomes possessive when it comes to treats. Ivan, about two years old, is similarly sociable but struggles with food guarding.

Jersey City Art & Studio Tour returns with citywide showcase of culture and creativity

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Jersey City, NJ – The 36th Annual Jersey City Art & Studio Tour (JCAST) kicks off Friday, transforming the city into a sprawling gallery with more than 120 venues across all six wards from October 3 through October 5.

This year’s theme, “Convergence: Art, Technology, Business, and Wellness,” highlights the intersection of creativity and community. The three-day event will feature over 60 open artist studios, curated exhibitions, live performances, film screenings, poetry readings, and interactive installations.

Founded in 1990 as a small downtown studio tour, JCAST has grown into one of the region’s longest-running open studio festivals, drawing more than 5,000 visitors annually and reinforcing Jersey City’s status as a major cultural hub.

Mayor Steven Fulop praised the event’s citywide reach, saying JCAST “showcases what makes Jersey City special: world-class creativity in every ward and a community that celebrates its artists and small businesses.”

Produced by The Creative Side under founder and director Atim Annette Oton, along with Donna Kessinger, Melissa Ulto, Judith Rahilly, and Shantel Asante-Kissi, the 2025 edition includes two major curated shows: “Convergence: Pivoting a Renaissance” at Eden Wood Realty and “The Art of Convergence” at the Mary McLeod Bethune Life Center.

The weekend will also feature business networking sessions, a VIP fundraiser, and Friday’s official kick-off party with live jazz and the presentation of JCAST Legend Awards to photographer Ernie Pannicioli and the late Ruth Moore of Moore’s Lounge.

Saturday programming includes guided art tours, a two-wheel “art crawl” by Bike JC, LGBTQ+ and women-focused artist tours, and panel discussions. Full schedules and locations are available at TheJCAST.com.

Christine Goodman, the city’s cultural affairs director, said the tour embodies the city’s spirit. “Every October, JCAST brings the city to life through the beauty and energy of art,” she said.

For one weekend, the streets of Jersey City will double as a canvas, celebrating artists and the communities that support them.

New Yorkers Don’t Seem to be Shooting Each Other as Much as Normal, Report Shows

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

New York, NY – New York City is seeing record-breaking drops in crime, with police officials announcing Wednesday that the first nine months of 2025 produced the fewest shooting incidents and shooting victims in the city’s history. The third quarter was also the safest on record in the subway system, with major transit crime hitting all-time lows in July, August, and September, excluding pandemic years.

NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch credited the department’s precision policing strategy, which she said combined aggressive gang takedowns, gun seizures, and data-driven deployments in high-crime areas. “This is not a coincidence — it’s the result of an unprecedented, data-driven deployment of thousands of officers to the areas they are needed most,” Tisch said.

Citywide, shooting incidents are down more than 20 percent this year, with 553 cases compared to 693 in 2024. Shooting victims dropped 19 percent to 694, the lowest level ever recorded. In the Bronx, shootings fell by 25 percent in the last quarter, Staten Island by 20 percent, Manhattan by nearly 19 percent, and Queens by 17 percent. Brooklyn saw a slight increase of two incidents.

The NYPD’s Summer Violence Reduction Plan, which deployed up to 2,300 officers nightly across 72 zones in 59 communities, helped drive the declines. Over 19 weeks, shootings in those zones dropped 47 percent and victims fell 44 percent. Detectives also carried out a record 55 gang takedowns and seized more than 4,175 illegal guns this year.

Transit crime fell 13.7 percent in the third quarter, marking the safest quarter ever underground. Shooting incidents in the subway dropped 67 percent year-to-date. Major crimes across the city also posted declines, including murders down nearly 18 percent, robberies down 9.8 percent, burglary down 3.8 percent, and retail theft down 13 percent.

Mayor Eric Adams said the numbers reflect two consecutive years of overall crime reductions and credited the NYPD for restoring confidence in public safety. “New York City remains the safest big city in America,” Adams said.

From the streets to the subways, the city closed summer with historic declines that officials vow to carry into the fall.

Monmouth & Ocean Counties, NJ – A fleet of 30 mobile sukkahs will travel through local communities next week as part of the Midstate Chabad Regional Office’s new Hero Sukkah Mobiles project, honoring October 7 heroes while sharing the traditions of Sukkot.

Each mobile sukkah will be staffed by Chabad rabbinical students and community ambassadors, inviting visitors to step inside, make a blessing, and hear the story of the hero their sukkah is dedicated to.

“This project is about transforming every individual into a lamplighter, bringing light, warmth, and inspiration to others,” said Rabbi Mendel Chazanow, Director of Organizational Development at the Midstate Chabad Regional Office. “These sukkahs will spread the joy of Sukkot across Monmouth and Ocean Counties and reach places where it may never have been experienced before.”

Organizers are also calling for volunteers to serve as “Hero Sukkah Ambassadors.” Participants will commit to a two-hour shift, greeting guests and sharing their sukkah’s hero story. Families are encouraged to join together to help create a welcoming environment.

The sukkah mobiles will operate on October 9, 10 and 12 across multiple towns in both counties.

Yaphank woman admits guilt in fatal DWI crash that killed grandmother in Middle Island

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Suffolk County, NY – A Yaphank woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to manslaughter and multiple related charges for a 2024 crash on Middle Country Road that killed a 75-year-old passenger and injured her daughter, prosecutors announced.

Melissa Koprowski, 32, admitted she was drunk and high on marijuana when she attempted to make a left turn in front of oncoming traffic on November 22, 2024, striking a blue Nissan Rogue head-on at the intersection of Wading River Hollow Road in Middle Island.

The crash killed Esther Guy, 75, who was seated in the backseat of the Rogue alongside her two-year-old grandchild. The child was unharmed, while the driver – Guy’s daughter – was hospitalized with injuries.

Prosecutors said Koprowski’s Dodge Durango slammed into the Nissan, forcing it off the roadway and into a wooded shoulder. Toxicology tests later showed her blood alcohol concentration was .12 percent, with a high level of THC also present in her system.

Koprowski was charged with Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Vehicular Manslaughter in the Second Degree, Assault in the Second Degree, Assault in the Third Degree, multiple counts of Driving While Intoxicated, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by a Combination of Alcohol and Drugs, and Reckless Driving.

She faces between 4 and 12 years in prison when sentenced on November 17 before Acting Supreme Court Justice Richard I. Horowitz.

District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney said the plea delivers accountability for a preventable tragedy.

The reckless turn left a grandmother dead, a daughter wounded, and a family forever scarred.

The progressive jackpot game, priced at $5 per ticket, began at $40,000 and increased with every non-winning ticket sold statewide. The $147,550 win in Bowie marks the final jackpot of the season for the Home Run Riches FAST PLAY game, which also featured a popular second-chance promotion tied to the Baltimore Orioles’ regular season performance.

Throughout the season, players could enter their tickets into the My Lottery Rewards program for a chance to be selected as a Contestant of the Game. Each contestant won $500 automatically, plus additional prizes for every home run ($500) and grand slam ($5,000) hit by the Orioles during that game.

Over 162 games, the Orioles hit 191 home runs, including three grand slams, resulting in $190,000 in second-chance prizes awarded to fans.

With this latest jackpot, the FAST PLAY Home Run Riches game concludes its 2025 season. The lucky Bowie winner must claim the prize through Maryland Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. For security, players are advised to sign the back of their ticket and schedule an appointment if claiming in person.

Two men killed in North Bergen crash following police pursuit now identified

NORTH BERGEN, NJ – Two young men were killed in a violent crash on Tonnelle Avenue following a brief police pursuit late Saturday night, and authorities have now released the identities of the victims and the officer involved.

According to the Attorney General’s Office, the crash occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. on September 28 after North Bergen Police Lieutenant Jason Appello began following a Honda Accord driven by 20-year-old Joseph Aziz of Jersey City. Officials say the vehicle was allegedly involved in a traffic violation near the intersection of 70th Street and Tonnelle Avenue.

Roughly one minute later, the Accord collided with a Toyota Corolla that was not involved in the pursuit. The driver of the Corolla was identified as 24-year-old Bryan Rivera of North Bergen. Both Aziz and Rivera sustained serious injuries in the crash and were pronounced dead shortly afterward.

A passenger in the Honda Accord was hospitalized and has since been released. Three passengers inside the Toyota Corolla were also transported to a hospital, where they remain under medical care.

The Office of Public Integrity and Accountability is leading the investigation, as required by a 2019 New Jersey law mandating independent investigations in cases where civilians die during encounters involving law enforcement officers. The law also requires the findings to be presented to a grand jury to determine whether criminal charges against any officer are warranted.

No further details have been released as the investigation continues.

Professor claims Hofstra punished him over race and religion after failed Malaysia trip

by Shore News Network October 1, 2025
By Shore News Network

Brooklyn, NY – A federal judge has ruled that a Hofstra University professor may proceed with part of his discrimination lawsuit against the school after a botched overseas research trip sparked student complaints and administrative fallout.

Timothy Daniels, a tenured anthropology professor who is African American and Muslim, sued Hofstra and several administrators alleging he was treated more harshly than white colleagues following a 2019 student research trip to Malaysia. Daniels claimed the university rushed to discipline him because of his race and religion, and later retaliated when he spoke out and prepared legal action.

Court records show Daniels organized the trip, funded by a grant, to study shadow puppetry with four female students. While abroad, concerns arose about safety, lodging, and transportation, including reports that a student drove a rented van in rural areas. By mid-July, one student’s parent contacted then–Dean Benjamin Rifkin urging Hofstra to bring the students home. Within days, the students separated from Daniels and requested the university arrange their early return.

Daniels alleged that once the group returned, administrators including Rifkin and then–Provost Herman Berliner unfairly escalated the situation. He argued that similar incidents involving white faculty were not handled with the same scrutiny. Around the same period, Daniels helped establish the Black Faculty Council at Hofstra to address systemic bias, heightening tensions between him and school leadership.

In the decision, U.S. District Judge Allyne R. Ross granted Hofstra’s request to dismiss certain claims but allowed others to proceed, including Daniels’s claims under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and Section 1981 of the Civil Rights Act of 1866. The judge found there was enough evidence for a jury to consider whether Daniels faced discriminatory or retaliatory treatment.

Daniels, who joined Hofstra in 2005 and earned tenure in 2011, was later appointed chair of the Anthropology Department despite the ongoing conflict.

The case, Daniels v. Hofstra University et al., remains active in the Eastern District of New York.

Dundalk player wins $50K Powerball prize as Mega Millions nears $500M jackpot

DUNDALK, MD – A lucky Powerball player in Dundalk is holding a $50,000 winning ticket from Monday night’s drawing, just as lottery fever builds across the country with Mega Millions approaching the half-billion mark.

The ticket, sold at Quick Mart at 6920 German Hill Road, matched four of the five white balls — 1, 3, 27, 60, and 65 — plus the red Powerball, 16. That combination landed the player the game’s third-tier $50,000 prize.

While no one hit the jackpot on September 29, players in Florida, Illinois, New York, and Washington matched all five white balls to score $1 million second-tier prizes.

With no jackpot winner, the Powerball grand prize has now risen to an estimated $174 million for the October 1 drawing, with a cash option of $80.7 million.

The Maryland Lottery also reminded players of several unclaimed winning tickets from earlier drawings, including two $100,000 winners sold in Oxon Hill and Sykesville and three $50,000 winners sold in Belcamp, Elkridge, and Silver Spring.

Meanwhile, attention is turning to Mega Millions, which is set to draw Tuesday night with a staggering estimated annuity value of $497 million and a cash option of $229.5 million.
