SALEM TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A Pennsylvania landlord narrowly escaped serious injury when his lawn mower exploded moments after he started it — and investigators now suspect foul play, pointing to a former tenant he evicted last month.

David Martin reported the blast to authorities around 4:30 p.m. on July 20, after the lawn mower suddenly detonated at his rental property in the 7900 block of Salem Township, Westmoreland County, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Martin told police he had just begun routine maintenance work on the property and had fueled up his Club Cadet zero-turn mower before starting it. He said he let the engine idle for about ten seconds before moving forward — when a powerful blast erupted beneath him.

“A loud explosion occurred, jolting him forward,” the affidavit quoted Martin as saying. He immediately jumped off and fled the area.

The explosion prompted a multi-agency investigation involving local police, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Authorities quickly turned their attention to 54-year-old James Sever, a former tenant who had been evicted from the same property on June 3.

According to the affidavit, a state trooper had encountered Sever at the property on June 11, when Sever allegedly returned after his eviction and made threats against Martin.

Martin told investigators he hadn’t visited the property or used the mower in three days prior to the explosion. He had arrived about 30 minutes before the incident to begin maintenance work.

He first entered the garage bay, filled the mower’s gas tank, then started it and sat down. The explosion occurred just as he engaged the handles to move forward, suggesting the device had been tampered with in advance.

Authorities have not disclosed what type of explosive device may have been used or whether Sever has been taken into custody.

The blast remains under investigation as officials work to determine how the explosive was placed and who was responsible.

The landlord was not injured in the explosion, but investigators believe the timing of the device suggests a deliberate attempt to harm him.

RALEIGH — A promotional image released by the North Carolina Democratic Party announcing Governor Roy Cooper’s U.S. Senate campaign has drawn criticism online after some observers claimed the pose depicted resembles a Nazi salute.

This is in response to Democrats claiming Elon Musk performed a Nazi salute earlier this year.

The image, posted Saturday to social media, features Cooper waving with his right arm raised while standing in front of the U.S. Capitol and the North Carolina state flag. The campaign visual was intended to mark the official launch of Cooper’s 2026 Senate bid.

But shortly after its release, conservative figures including former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker criticized the image. “Is that a Nazi salute?!?” Walker posted on X (formerly Twitter), referencing the raised-arm gesture.

The North Carolina Democratic Party has not commented on the criticism. The photo used in the graphic appears to show Cooper mid-wave, a common gesture in political campaign imagery.

Supporters of the governor dismissed the accusations as bad-faith interpretations of a routine campaign pose. Critics, however, pointed to a growing sensitivity around the use of visual symbolism in politics, particularly in the age of social media where images can quickly go viral and out of context.

There is no indication that the image was meant to reference anything beyond a standard political wave. No changes have been made to the post or campaign materials as of Tuesday.

TRENTON — Mikie Sherrill’s selection of pastor Dale Caldwell as her running mate in the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial race is drawing sharp criticism from members of the LGBTQ community, who cite concerns about anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in recent sermons from Caldwell’s church.

Caldwell, the senior pastor at Covenant House of God in New Brunswick, was officially named as Sherrill’s choice for lieutenant governor earlier this month. The announcement has sparked backlash online and among LGBTQ advocates, some of whom describe the church’s messaging as rooted in traditionalist language that they say marginalizes LGBTQ people.

“I’m LGBTQ, I’m from New Jersey, and I’m scared,” one New Jersey resident wrote in a widely circulated post. “I listened to his church’s most recent service. The language was that same coded, bigoted garbage that we’ve heard a thousand times.”

The service in question, which remains publicly available online, includes references to “traditional values” and other language that critics say has historically been used to oppose LGBTQ inclusion, even if not explicitly stated. The backlash underscores tensions within the Democratic Party as Sherrill attempts to unite a broad coalition in a state where progressives have increasingly expressed frustration over being sidelined.

“This Dale Caldwell pick feels like the last straw,” the same resident wrote. “There were better options. They existed. They just weren’t given a chance.”

“His religion only got rid of its bylaws banning LGBT clergy last year and he had no problem being a part of it. They’re still allowed to deny services and marriage to LGBT couples if they so choose even despite the rule change. I don’t support anyone that subscribed to a religion that discrimates against me. There are plenty of non denominational branches of Christianity that openly accepted LGBT people for decades that he chose not to join,” another posted.

Sherrill has not publicly responded to the criticism. Caldwell has not issued a statement addressing the sermon or his views on LGBTQ rights since joining the ticket.

“Garbage. Sherrill is going to cost us the election. Why the hell did people vote for her in the primary… %$*@& ridiculous,” another poster commented.

“Great, can’t wait for them to toss the trans community under the bus or just lose and get the same result. I’m at the point of not even bothering voting for dems anymore,” another said.

The campaign’s announcement of Caldwell, an education leader and community figure, was intended to emphasize experience and statewide appeal. But for many in the LGBTQ community, the choice has raised deeper concerns about representation, inclusion, and whether their rights and safety are being taken seriously in a shifting political landscape.

Other Democrats in the discussion said any Democrat is better than a Republican in Trenton, “And we still need to vote blue. Even if this guy is a total POS you aren’t going to persuade the Democrats by having them lose and letting Republicans win. It sucks, but this is why primaries and local elections are so important. Don’t wait for the next election. Build community now.”
