(Reuters) -An Oregon county on Thursday sued Exxon, Chevron, other major oil and coal companies, and industry groups, seeking over $50 billion to counter the harms caused by extreme weather fueled by climate change.

Multnomah County said in the lawsuit filed in state court in Portland that fossil fuel companies and trade groups like the American Petroleum Institute intentionally deceived the public about the dangers of burning their products for decades. It said the companies and trade groups must now help pay for past and future harms from the extreme weather that has resulted, including a 2021 heat wave in the Pacific Northwest that killed dozens.

Rather than acknowledge the dangers of climate change, the lawsuit said the fossil fuel industry worked to undermine the scientific consensus around the problem “with pseudo-science, fabricated doubt, and a well-funded, sustained public relations campaign to promote their spin.”

The lawsuit also targets the consulting firm McKinsey, which it said advises major oil companies, including on strategies to downplay or deny the link between greenhouse gas emissions and extreme weather.

Theodore Boutrous, an attorney for Chevron, said in a statement that lawsuits such as the one filed on Thursday are “counterproductive” and distract from advancing effective international policy solutions. He said the county’s claims are “baseless” and barred by the U.S. Constitution.

A spokesperson for the American Petroleum Institute called the lawsuit and others like it “meritless” and said the litigation wastes taxpayer resources.

McKinsey did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The legal action follows dozens of lawsuits filed in recent years against the fossil fuel industry by states and municipalities across the U.S. broadly alleging harms from climate impacts including extreme weather.

The American Petroleum Institute and oil companies have said in response to those lawsuits that policies to address climate change should come from the federal executive branch and Congress, not via a patchwork of decisions in court cases across the United States.

The county said Thursday it had already begun experiencing climate-related harms, including from the 2021 “heat dome” that caused temperatures in the county, which includes Portland, to soar to 116 Fahrenheit (46.6 Celsius).

Since the area normally has mild weather, the lawsuit said residents were not equipped with things like air conditioners to handle the elevated temperatures. The county said 69 people in the county died from overheating and the heat wave caused a “crushing economic burden.”

The heat wave, and other extreme weather events like wildfires, are a “direct and foreseeable consequence” of the industry’s decision to sell fossil fuels for decades despite knowing their harms, according to the lawsuit.

The county is seeking $50 million to repay it for its past efforts to protect public health, safety and property from heat waves and wildfires, at least $1.5 billion for future damages and at least $50 billion for an abatement fund to help study and implement mitigation measures to reduce climate-related harms.

BRASILIA (Reuters) -Brazil’s proposed tax reform will include compensation funds to benefit states that lose money under the changes, the bill’s coordinator, Congressman Aguinaldo Ribeiro, said on Thursday, as the proposed constitutional amendment was unveiled.

The restructuring of Brazil’s notoriously complex consumption taxes, which has been attempted previously by various governments multiple times without success, is a key step in President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s plan to boost growth.

The proposal, which must still be debated by Congress, plans to over eight years merge various levies into a value-added tax (VAT) with separate federal and regional rates.

The proposal, which would shift the tax basis from where goods are produced to where they are consumed, is expected to benefit the coffers of Brazil’s wealthier and more populous states.

While the VAT change is set to take eight years, the proposal sets out a 50-year transition period for the place-of-consumption reform, starting in 2029 in a bid to soften the opposition of some state governors.

The federal government would also finance a fund devoted to the states’ development, at a cost of 8 billion reais in 2029 and rising to an annual amount of at least 40 billion reais ($8.38 billion) from 2033.

A second fund would be created to compensate for tax benefits already granted by states, to which the government would allocate a total of 160 billion reais from 2025 to 2032.

Prior to the official presentation of the bill, Speaker Arthur Lira said it should be voted on in the Lower House in the first week of July. Finance Minister Fernando Haddad has emphasized that his team’s immediate focus over the next two weeks will be solely on securing its approval.

The proposal acknowledged exemptions in standard tax rates, including a reduced rate for some goods and services related to health, education, public transportation and rural production.

(Reuters) -TikTok Chief Operating Officer V. Pappas is stepping down after five years with the short-video company owned by China’s ByteDance, according to an email seen by Reuters on Thursday.

In an email to staff, Pappas said they would be taking on an advisory role for the company during the transition.

“Given all the successes reached at TikTok, I finally feel the time is right to move on and refocus on my entrepreneurial passions,” said Pappas, who uses the pronoun they.

ByteDance Chief Executive Shou Chew also announced Thursday in a memo to employees shared with Reuters that Zenia Mucha, previously a 20-year veteran at Walt Disney Co, will join TikTok as chief brand and communications officer.

Adam Presser, TikTok’s chief of staff, will become head of operations and oversee content, user operations and distribution, Chew said.

TikTok has faced scrutiny worldwide over security concerns due to its Chinese ownership.

U.S. lawmakers last week introduced new legislation to protect Americans’ user data from being used by U.S. adversaries.

Last month, TikTok sued Montana after it became the first state to ban the app state-wide.

Biden Admin Gives Ford, Foreign Company Whopping $9 Billion Loan For EV Plants

John Hugh DeMastri on June 22, 2023

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on Thursday announced a conditional loan of up to $9.2 billion to a joint electric vehicle venture between Ford and Korean battery maker SK On.

When combined with state subsidies offered to the joint venture, known as BlueOval SK, the record-breaking loan means that taxpayers will be financing nearly the entire $11.4 billion investment by Ford and SK, according to Blomberg. The loan is the latest in a series of increasingly large offers from the DOE’s Loan Program Office (LPO), which had its lending authority surge to $400 billion — more than 10 times the $33 billion it has issued since 2009 —following the passage of President Joe Biden’s signature climate law, the Inflation Reduction Act.

Adjusted for inflation, the loan is slightly larger than the $5.9 billion loan that Ford received amid auto-industry bailouts in 2009, a loan Ford only repaid in June 2022. Ford is worth roughly $56.9 billion, while SK is worth roughly $6.9 billion, meaning the $9.2 billion loan represents roughly 14.4% of the combined value of the two companies, according to data from The Wall Street Journal.

The loan will be disbursed through the DOE’s Loan Program Office (LPO), which is most well-known for issuing a roughly $500 million loan to solar startup Solyndra, which collapsed in 2011. Although the LPO is tasked with supporting and scaling up emerging companies and technologies, the BlueOval SK plant is not considered cutting edge, and is instead receiving support due to the project’s perceived importance to the Biden administration’s strategy for building a U.S. manufacturing base, Bloomberg reported.

“The goal of the [battery-lending] program is not innovation but to get more of the supply chain to be manufactured in the US,” LPO Director Jigar Shah told Bloomberg.

The government’s support will be a significant boon for Ford, which committed last year to spending roughly $50 billion as part of a four-year strategy to scale up its electric vehicle business, Bloomberg reported. The company’s electric vehicle division is on track for $3 billion in losses in 2023 and is losing more than $60,000 on each electric vehicle sold, but the company expects to begin turning a profit by the end of next year.

“The DOE’s commitment to this project will strengthen battery manufacturing in the U.S. while reducing carbon emissions, providing customers with high-performance vehicles, and creating good jobs for future generations,” Robert Rhee, CEO of BlueOval SK, said in a statement shared with the Daily Caller News Foundation. “BlueOval SK and our parent companies, Ford and SK On, are expanding demand for batteries and the exciting vehicles they will power. This federal loan from the DOE helps with that mission.”

The DOE did not immediately respond to a Daily Caller News Foundation request for comment.

Supreme Court Sides Against Navajo Nation In Dispute Over Water Rights

Katelynn Richardson on June 22, 2023

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 Thursday that the federal government does not need to take affirmative steps to secure water for the Navajo Nation, reversing the Ninth Circuit’s decision.

The case, Arizona v. Navajo Nation, questioned whether the federal government has an obligation to take affirmative steps to meet the Navajo Nation’s water needs under the 1868 treaty that established the reservation. Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote in the majority opinion, which was joined by Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito and Amy Coney Barrett, that the treaty does not require the United States to take steps like “assessing the Tribe’s water needs, developing a plan to secure the needed water, and potentially building pipelines, pumps, wells, or other water infrastructure.”

“[T]he United States has no duty to farm the land, mine the minerals, or harvest the timber on the reservation—or, for that matter, to build roads and bridges on the reservation,” he wrote. “Just as there is no such duty with respect to the land, there likewise is no such duty with respect to the water.”

“In light of the treaty’s text and history, we conclude that the treaty does not require the United States to take those affirmative steps,” Kavanaugh wrote.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.

Texas State Senator Barred From Voting In Husband’s Impeachment Trial

Mia Hernandez on June 22, 2023

Republican Texas State Sen. Angela Paxton will not be allowed to vote in the impeachment trial of her husband, suspended Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, according to a resolution approved Wednesday.

A Texas state statute requires that each member of the state Senate be in attendance when it is meeting as a court of impeachment. The resolution states that “a member of the court who is the spouse of a party to the court of impeachment” is a conflict of interest and the member is ineligible to vote or “participate in closed sessions or deliberations” on the topic, according to its text.

Angela Paxton will still be required to attend the proceedings and the trial begins on Sept. 5, according to the Associated Press.

“Each time I was elected, I took an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws of this great state, and Texas law compels each member of the Senate to attend when the Senate meets as a court of impeachment,” Angela Paxton wrote in a Monday statement on Twitter. “As a member of the Senate, I hold these obligations sacred and I will carry out my duties, not because it is easy, but because the Constitution demands it and because my constituents deserve it.”

The Texas House of Representatives voted to impeach Ken Paxton on May 27 over allegations including corruption, bribery and obstruction of justice in relation to the FBI’s investigation into a Paxton donor. Paxton is the third sitting official to be impeached in the state’s near 200-year history, according to the AP.

Social Media Site Found To Be A Hub For Child Sexual Exploitation

Erinn Broadus on June 22, 2023

Discord, a social media site initially set up for gamers, has been found to be a hub for child sexual exploitation including grooming and sextortion, according to NBC News.

In certain chat rooms, adults have been grooming children, trading [censored]ographic images of children and coercing children into sending sexually explicit images of themselves that can then be used against them, NBC News reported. The outlet found 165 cases where adults were prosecuted for using Discord to trade sexually explicit images of children or to allegedly extort children into sending explicit images of themselves, and 35 cases, 15 of which the defendants pleaded guilty, where the platform was used to kidnap, groom or sexually assault children.

Discord started in 2015 and has since grown to 150 million users, according to NBC News.

“There is a child exploitation issue on the platform. That’s undeniable,” John Shehan, senior vice president of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), said, according to NBC News. Shehan says his organization has seen “explosive growth” of sexual exploitation of children on Discord.

Reports of child sexual exploitation grew 474% from 2021 to 2022 on Discord, according to the NCMEC. Exploitation is rampant on the media site because of the young user base and decentralized method of operations, NBC News reported.

In some of the groups on Discord, they explicitly cater to young people; one is titled “little girls ages 12-17 only” with the number “18” in a circle with a slash through it as to indicate no one of legal age is allowed in, according to NBC News. Channels within that group included “begging-to-have-sex-chat” and “nude-videos.”

In another group, minors had to send nudes for access, according to NBC News.

“YOU NEED TO SEND A VERIFICATION PHOTO TO THE OWNER! IT HAS TO BE NUDE,” wrote one user in the group.

Shehan said that Discord has been difficult to work with regarding limiting the amount of underage nudity on the site, claiming that they rescinded an invitation to a roundtable on safety. Additionally, when a Canadian task force identified a group of 120 people that were actively sharing child exploitative material, Discord said it would cost an unspecified amount of money to save the records.

Discord did not immediately respond to Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Toyota Plant Served Only Watermelon On Juneteenth, Employees Say

Will Kessler on June 22, 2023

Employees accused a Toyota plant in Kansas City of being “disrespectful” after it served only watermelon as a part of a Juneteenth celebration, according to FOX4.

The company held a Juneteenth celebration at a Kansas City, Missouri, distribution center where watermelon was the only thing served to staff, according to FOX4. Employees were offended by the celebration, with one employee referring to it as racism he should not have to encounter at work.

“A slap in the face, very disrespectful, you know. They preach Black lives matter, but kind of like they were making a joke out of us,” Jarret Bolden, a black employee, told FOX4. “Acknowledge us as people. Stop taking us as a joke.”

Juneteenth was made a federal holiday by the Biden administration in 2021 in order to celebrate the official end of slavery in the Confederate states. Although former President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, hundreds of thousands of slaves were not made aware of their liberation after the Civil War had ended.

“To embrace the Juneteenth holiday, a summer intern coordinated a celebration activity that included a presentation focused on the history, activities and foods of Freedom Day,” a Toyota spokesperson said in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation. “This presentation was based on the individual’s personal experience celebrating the holiday with their family. In line with our core value of respect for people, Toyota supports educational activities that bring awareness and understanding of diverse cultures.”

The diversity and inclusion team at the plant is all white, employees told FOX4.

“I turned around and asked a member that’s on the DNI team – which is the diversity and inclusion team – I said, ‘What the heck? This isn’t OK.’ And he just laughed,” another employee of the plant, Kim McCarthy, said to FOX4 about the reportedly all-white diversity and inclusion team.

Other large companies have also been accused of being insensitive over Juneteenth. Walmart apologized in 2022 after complaints over its sale of Juneteenth flavored ice cream, with a label that read “share and celebrate African-American culture, emancipation, and enduring hope.”

Obama Is Coaching Up Left-Wing House Democrats In Private Meetings, Report Says

Arjun Singh on June 22, 2023

Former President Barack Obama has been hosting left-wing Democratic lawmakers to advise them on how to campaign, according to a Thursday Politico column.

Obama has been intermittently involved in politics since leaving office in 2017, having campaigned for then-candidate Joe Biden’s election in 2020 and for multiple congressional candidates in the 2022 midterms. His recent invitations to lawmakers for private conversations about campaigning and strategy is an increase in such political activity and suggests that he may be seeking to influence the party’s agenda, per Politico.

Among the members that Obama has met with include Democratic Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Maxwell Frost of Florida, Mikie Sherrill of New Jersey and Haley Stevens of Michigan. The alleged purpose of the conversations was to enable Obama to “keep current with his party’s rising stars,” per the report.

The content of the discussions included “long-winded advice, talk of best practices and curiosity about what the lawmakers were hearing at home,” per the report, with Obama advising House Democrats on how they ought to campaign and legislate ahead of the 2024 elections when President Joe Biden will likely also be on the ballot. The report notes that the issue of low turnout among black men was raised, while Obama was also how to “avoid coming off as elitist.”

During his discussions, Obama also reportedly pressed Democrats to “establish their own identity,” but said that lawmakers should allow “that the party’s fate in 2024 would be largely tied to Biden’s success.”

Biden, who was Obama’s vice president for eight years, is known to have a complicated relationship with Obama. At recent events where both have appeared, Obama has often drawn more attention despite Biden being the incumbent president, while Biden “oftentimes felt that that loyalty was not being rewarded” during the Obama administration, according to former Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta.

While he was president, Obama rarely pursued such conversations with new lawmakers. Neither have other Democratic or Republican former presidents – such as Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – held an organized series of private conversations with lawmakers of their party since leaving the White House.

The report notes that attendees hoped Obama would become more involved in the 2024 election, citing his “popularity and rhetorical gifts” in apparent contrast to Biden, who has made notable gaffes while speaking and has an approval rating of 35% per Pew Research, compared to Obama’s 51%.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

School Reported Parents To Police, Kicked Out Their Kids For Questioning ‘Political Bias,’ Lawsuit Alleges

Reagan Reese on June 22, 2023

An Ohio school allegedly reported two parents to the police, launching a retaliation campaign against them for questioning its curriculum and financial spending, according to a June lawsuit.

Amy Gonzalez and Andrea Gross announced the filing of a lawsuit Thursday against Columbus Academy, a private institution, for allegedly painting the parents in a “false light” after they asked the district about its spending of funds and its “politically biased curriculum.” After Gonzalez and Gross voiced their concerns in 2021, Columbus Academy allegedly expelled the parents’ children from school and filed a police report against the parents in an effort to “harass and intimidate” them, the lawsuit stated.

“The [school] wanted this to be political, which it is not,” Gross told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “We have said from the beginning. This is not a red thing. This is not a blue thing. It’s a human thing. It is about kids, and it’s about kids who learn differently and where are their resources, and about kids that are Latino and kids that are different religions.”

Over the last several years, the school district had veered into a “politically biased” environment as teachers pressured students to take certain stances, the lawsuit alleged. One teacher allegedly told students they would not communicate with individuals who supported President Donald Trump and another told kids that there is “only one side” when discussing politics.

Students who were late to a “walkout” in order to tribute Martin Luther King Jr. were allegedly called racist by other students while staff looked on, the lawsuit stated. The academy allegedly offered an “emergency pandemic fund” to be used “exclusively” on African American students and the school planned several events for “Black History Month, while offering substantially fewer activities for Hispanic Heritage Month.”

After the parents brought their concerns regarding curriculum and spending to the school board in an open letter, their students were expelled from the institution and the school labeled the parents as “anti-black” and “bat-shit crazy Republicans,” the lawsuit alleged. Administration allegedly deemed the parents an “indirect threat against the Academy and its personnel” before telling its faculty that the FBI had been notified.

The lawsuit says the parents don’t believe an actual FBI report was ever filed, but that the “notification was done to harass and intimidate” them.

In 2021, the National School Boards Association sent a letter to the Biden administration comparing parents at school board meetings to “domestic terrorists.” In response, AG Garland issued a directive for the FBI to “use its authority” on parents who protested at school board meetings.

Around the country parents are pushing back against gender identity and race-based curriculums in schools; in California, parents fought with activists while protesting against the inclusion of a LGBT-focused curriculum for students. A Virginia parent was arrested while protesting Critical Race Theory (CRT) and a transgender policy within a school district.

Columbus Academy did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

House Committee Passes Rule Banning Pentagon From Funding ‘Censorship’ Orgs

Micaela Burrow on June 22, 2023

The House included a rule banning the Pentagon from contracting with organizations seeking to rate or police news sites, including groups accused of unfairly targeting conservatives, in the annual defense bill passed at committee level early Thursday morning.

The rule singles out the Global Disinformation Index (GDI), Graphika, NewsGuard and related organizations that target perceived online disinformation and rate news sources based on accuracy and transparency. United Kingdom-based GDI worked for the State Department while pushing to demonetize and deplatform conservative websites on various tech and social media platforms, raising concerns among activists and lawmakers that many so-called “fact checking” organizations may be biased in their judgements against right-leaning content.

“Proud to pass my amendment that prohibits the Department of Defense from contracting with any one of a number of “misinformation” or “disinformation” monitors that rate news and information sources,” Republican Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia, who sponsored the amendment, said in a statement. “While these media monitors claim to be nonpartisan, the reality is they are not.”

The amendment, adopted as part of the House Armed Services Committee’s 2024 National Defense Authorization Act passed early Thursday morning, blocks Pentagon funds from going to the Global Disinformation Index, Graphika, NewsGuard or “any other entity the function of which is to advise the censorship or blacklisting of news sources based on subjective criteria or political biases, under the stated function of ‘fact checking’ or otherwise removing ‘misinformation’” from the internet.

Advertising and marketing agencies the Department of Defense (DOD) employs to reach new recruits would have to certify they do not use any services from organizations, according to the text of the amendment.

DOD offered NewsGuard Technologies a contract in 2021 worth $749,387 for services relating to “misinformation fingerprints,” records show. U.S. Cyber Command and the State Department jointly ran a program for “detecting COVID-19 misinformation and disinformation” using NewsGuard’s “Misinformation Fingerprints” tool, which leveraged artificial intelligence to track prominent misinformation narratives online and “offer solutions to hoaxes related to the COVID-19 pandemic,” according to a news release.

The Institution for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) also received $80,000 in 2023 for “prevention,” although specifics of the program were not immediately available, records show. ISD is a U.K.-based nonprofit organization that partners with social media platforms to identify and combat what it calls online hate, extremism and disinformation.

However, it frequently labels mainstream conservative speech as hate or disinformation, evaluating content against narrowly-defined liberal perspectives on issues like abortion, climate change, transgenderism and Critical Race Theory, the Daily Caller News Foundation previously found. ISD has an active contract with the State Department to “advance the development of promising and innovative technologies against disinformation and propaganda.”

Wittman’s amendment blocks additional contracts in that vein.

The DCNF did not identify any current or inactive DOD contracts with GDI or Graphika, a company that monitors disinformation campaigns on social media and exposed a U.S. Central Command operation promoting pro-U.S. content on Twitter and Facebook.

ISD, NewsGuard, GDI and Graphika did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Chris Christie Doubles Down On Opposing Child Sex Change Procedure Ban

Mary Lou Masters on June 22, 2023

  • Former GOP New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie doubled down Thursday and reiterated that he opposes government restriction of sex change procedures for minors.
  • Christie’s opinion, that he first shared on Sunday, is one that a majority of Americans and nearly the entire Republican primary field for president disagree with.
  • “It’s more of a parents’ decision than it is a governor’s decision for goodness sake,” said Christie. “I wouldn’t want any government official coming in and telling me what decisions can I help my child through and how I should do it, and I want those decisions to be made by parents, not by the government.”

Former Republican New Jersey Governor and presidential candidate Chris Christie doubled down on Thursday about his stance that he opposes bans on sex change procedures for minors.

Christie told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union” Sunday that he doesn’t think the government should regulate giving minors puberty blockers and hormones, and instead emphasized parental involvement. The former governor restated his opinion Thursday on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends,” even though a majority of Americans disagree.

“I just don’t want to see our government getting more intrusive in everybody’s life, getting bigger. I don’t think anything can replace parents when you are talking about major decisions that need to be made by our children,” Christie told host Brian Kilmeade. “I want all parents out there to think about something. How many other decisions do you want the government making for you, in your home, regarding your kids? I don’t want any of those decisions made by the government.”

“Parents are the ones who love their children the most, who care about their children the most, who understand their children the most, and parents should be the ones making these decisions,” Christie added.

A majority of Americans oppose sex change procedures for minors, with nearly 70% opposing puberty blockers for children 10 to 14, and almost 60% disapproving of children 15 to 17 receiving hormones, according to an early May Washington Post/KFF poll.

Kilmeade pushed Christie and asked if parents should be permitted to make a decision if their 14-year-old child approaches them about “switching genders,” and the former governor deflected by emphasizing parental rights. Christie then criticized Republican Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders for her state’s ban on such procedures and questioned if she should be “making this decision for children in Arkansas.”

“It’s more of a parents’ decision than it is a governor’s decision for goodness sake,” said Christie. “I wouldn’t want any government official coming in and telling me what decisions can I help my child through and how I should do it, and I want those decisions to be made by parents, not by the government.”

Christie’s opinion on sex change procedures for minors stands out in a crowded GOP primary field where many of his opponents disagree, including former President Donald Trump, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and conservative radio personality Larry Elder.

“Adults have the right to make whatever alterations to their own body that they choose, but children are too young to make this type of permanent, irreversible decision,” Elder told the Daily Caller News Foundation. “If Chris Christie can’t agree with that, he is running in the wrong party’s primary.”

Along with Hutchinson and DeSantis, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed legislation banning sex change procedures on minors, which Burgum said was “aimed at protecting children from the life-altering ramifications of gender reassignment surgeries,” according to The Associated Press.

Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, who recently joined the presidential race, previously told the DCNF in an interview that while he doesn’t support sex change procedures for minors, he isn’t certain the government should be involved, though, he left the door open to legislation if president.

“Sex change for minors is something I just can’t even comprehend, as a parent,” Suarez said. “It’s problematic for Republicans because we say, I think correctly, that we don’t want the government telling us, or the school system telling us, or teaching sexuality to our young children. Right? And so, you know, that is a totally defensible position, and I believe that position and I agree with that position.”

Christie’s campaign declined the DCNF’s request for comment.

Sex Club Founder Banned After Exposing Hunter Biden’s Membership

Aaron Life on June 22, 2023

The founder of a high-end Los Angeles sex club was permanently banned from the group after he publicly claimed that Hunter Biden was a former member on Tuesday.

Damon Lawner founded the sex club “Snctm” in 2019, but he is no longer welcome in the club after he outed Hunter Biden as a member on his Instagram story this week. Snctm confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that “Mr. Lawner’s membership has been revoked, effective immediately,” for violating the group’s code of conduct, which prohibits members’ identities from being publicly revealed.

“Hunter was a member at Snctm and I canceled his membership after 1 party because he’s a scumbag, Lawner wrote on his Instagram story.

In a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times, Snctm said, “Snctm, as a private members club, prioritizes the safety and privacy of our esteemed members above all. Consequently, we neither confirm nor deny the identities of our attendees. Furthermore, we uphold a strict code of conduct, and any infringement leads to a lifetime ban.”

Lawner doubled down on his Instagram post, telling the Los Angeles Times that, “Posting what I did on my Instagram about Hunter was me letting people know that the type of behavior that he exhibited was something that upsets me.” Lawner added, “I knew that the consequences could be me not being part of Snctm anymore, but I was willing to take that risk.”

GOP Sen Rick Scott Weighing Presidential Bid: REPORT

Mary Lou Masters on June 22, 2023

Republican Sen. Rick Scott of Florida is weighing a presidential bid for 2024, which would make him the state’s fourth GOP primary candidate, according to The New York Times.

The former Florida governor has been considering joining the growing Republican primary field for the past few weeks, sources familiar with the matter told the NYT. If Scott makes a bid for the White House, he’d face three other Floridians including former President Donald Trump, Gov. Ron DeSantis and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez.

Scott’s rumored presidential aspirations come after he announced earlier in the year that he’d be seeking a second term in the Senate, according to the NYT.

“It’s flattering that some have mentioned the possibility of Senator Scott running for President, but as he’s said many times, he’s running for re-election to the Senate,” Scott’s senior adviser, Chris Hartline, told the Daily Caller News Foundation in a statement.

Scott was narrowly elected to both of his gubernatorial terms in 2010 and 2014 by roughly 1 point, according to Ballotpedia. After DeSantis succeeded the former governor in 2018, Scott won a tough senatorial election where he beat his Democratic opponent 50.1% to 49.9%.

The Real Clear Politics (RCP) average for a 2024 national Republican primary, based on polls conducted between June 5 and June 20, indicate that Trump and DeSantis are leading the field with 52.2% and 21.4%, respectively.

Along with challenging the Floridians in 2024, Scott would face former Vice President Mike Pence, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, former Texas Rep. Will Hurd, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and conservative radio personality Larry Elder.

‘Grateful For His Support’: Dem Congresswoman Courted Epstein To Attend Fundraiser, Emails Show

Jake Smith on June 22, 2023

Democratic Virgin Islands Del. Stacey Plaskett asked for now-deceased sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein to attend a fundraising event for her campaign, according to court documents released last week.

Emails from new court documents show that Plaskett asked to have Epstein attend a fundraising event in 2018, while an associate of Epstein’s asked the sex offender to donate to Plaskett, according to emails unsealed last week and reported on by The Washington Free Beacon. The emails were released as part of a lawsuit against JPMorgan – where Epstein was a client– by the Virgin Islands, which alleges that the bank failed to report Epstein’s suspicious activity.

During an interview with The Virgin Islands Consortium last month, Plaskett called Epstein “a reprehensible person” and said she was “truly disgusted by his actions.”

“I regret accepting that campaign contribution, but at the time I was unaware that my campaign had received it,” she insisted.

However, an email unearthed in court filings show that Plaskett instructed Epstein associate Lesley Groff to invite Epstein to her 2018 fundraising event.

“If you’d share this invitation with Jeffrey I’d be much appreciative. I would be grateful for his support and the support of those he may direct to assist me,” Plaskett wrote to Groff.

Epstein responded and told Groff to “get max [amount]” for Plaskett.

Another email shows that Cecile de Jongh, the former Virgin Island’s First Lady and ex-employee of Epstein, asked the pedophile financier to contribute to Plaskett’s 2014 campaign.

“Your help is needed. We are trying to get Stacey Plaskett elected to Congress,” reads de Jongh’s email to Epstein. “We would have a friend in Stacey.”

During a deposition last month, Plaskett said she had met with Epstein multiple times, several years after Epstein was publicly convicted of child sex crimes. She also said she met with Epstein at his home in New York City.

Del. Plaskett did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Exec Who Led Disney’s Push Against DeSantis’ Parental Rights Bill Now Lobbying For Country That Executes Gays

Laurel Duggan on June 22, 2023

Geoff Morrell, who was Disney’s chief corporate affairs officer during the company’s 2022 fight against Florida’s LGBT-related legislation, registered as a foreign agent for the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia, according to legal documents.

Morrell earned more than $10 million in three months while running Disney’s public relations and government affairs in 2022, according to Fortune, as the company feuded with Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis over the state’s Parental Rights in Education bill, which bars classroom instruction on gender identity and sexuality prior to the fourth grade. Morrell will now work on public relations and support government affairs engagement for Saudi Arabia, a country in which same-sex sexual relationships are punishable by execution, according to his foreign agent registration form.

Morrell signed paperwork registering as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agent Registration Act of 1938 on Tuesday, and will work on behalf of the Saudi fund’s newly announced partnership with the PGA Tour.

“The short form registrant will provide the foreign principal with communications and stakeholder engagement consulting services with respect to the foreign principal’s golf-related commercial businesses and investments including its partnership with the PGA Tour,” the form read. “The short form registrant and colleagues will support the development of a strategy and engagement plan, support the development of key messaging and other content, advise on media and social media strategy and engagement, provide media training, and support government affairs engagement in specific market.”

While Morrell was leading Disney’s public relations efforts, the company expressed its opposition to the Parental Rights in Education bill, which it characterized as anti-LGBT.

“Florida’s HB 1557, also known as the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, should never have passed and should never have been signed into law. Our goal as a company is for this law to be repealed by the legislature or struck down in the courts, and we remain committed to supporting the national and state organizations working to achieve that,” the company said in a public statement shared on Twitter. “We are dedicated to standing up for the rights and safety of LGBTQ+ members of the Disney family, as well as the LGBTQ+ community in Florida and across the country.”

Married men in Saudi Arabia who engage in same-sex relations with other men are subject to the death penalty, and non-married men are flogged for same-sex relations, according to Human Dignity Trust. Same-sex marriage is not permitted, and the country’s dress codes forbid men from dressing as women.

Morrell did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

‘We’re Affirming That They Should Hate Themselves’: Doctor Says Support For Gender Transitions Drives Youth Suicides

Laurel Duggan on June 22, 2023

A physician at a children’s hospital that offers cross-sex medical procedures to minors anonymously shared his concerns that the practice was driving children to suicide in an interview with Christopher Rufo for City Journal, a publication of the Manhattan Institute.

The three core tenets of the theory behind medical gender transitions are that patients truly are whichever sex they say they are, that doctors should automatically affirm patients’ gender identity and that patients are more likely to commit suicide if they do not receive cross-sex medical interventions, according to the doctor. Other doctors have previously said the transgender suicide rate is exaggerated and warned that frequent references to transgender suicides by doctors and activists actually exacerbate suicide risk in a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“In reality, when you ‘affirm’ these individuals’ gender identity, what you are doing is affirming their hatred for themselves. You have these children who are going through confusing times, difficult times; when you affirm this belief system, what you’re really doing is telling them: ‘You hate yourself at this moment, and I will affirm that,’” he told City Journal.

“We have to ask ourselves, why do these people have such high rates of suicide? Because we’re affirming that they should hate themselves and that they should try to destroy themselves,” he said.

The threat of suicide is used to justify biomedical interventions for young patients who believe they are transgender, including puberty blockers at age 11, hormones at 13 and mastectomies before patients turn 18, the doctor told City Journal.

“The threat of suicide removes any of the guardrails for what we must do to affirm that individual’s identity,” he told the outlet.

The doctor compared child sex changes to human sacrifices, suggesting doctors expressed their devotion to transgender ideology by destroying innocent children.

“What becomes the greatest expression of faith to other believers? To sacrifice the most pure and innocent. Once they do that, they become heroes. They become martyrs. They have their flag hung up at the White House,” he said. “And there’s no going back, because if they were to demonstrate any degree of humility, they would have to come to terms with the fact that they advocated for and participated in a practice that destroyed the lives of innocent children.”

Latest GOP Presidential Candidate Was Commissioner For Pro-Censorship Group With Left-Leaning Ties

Jason Cohen on June 22, 2023

Former Republican Texas Rep. Will Hurd, who announced his run for president on Thursday, was previously involved with a group that advocated for censorship and is connected to prominent left-leaning individuals.

Hurd was a commissioner on the Aspen Institute’s “Commission on Information Disorder,” a group whose final report in 2021 pushed social media platforms to censor “misinformation.” The 80-page report recommends suppression tactics such as labels, downranking, warnings, strikes, suspensions, removal and more for users that spread “mis- and disinformation.”

“Harmful misinformation posted by influential accounts should be prioritized for moderation and addressed (e.g., through labels, downranking, or removal),” the commission’s final report states. “Platforms should continue to implement transparent policies for escalating action based on repetitive spreading behaviors—from first warning to temporary suspensions to permanent suspensions. There should be a clear appeals process and platforms should consider offering pathways for reform.”

The report also discusses giving “strikes” to a category of users called “savvy spreaders.”

“Savvy spreaders of misinformation know how to navigate existing policies by couching misinformation in uncertainty (‘just asking questions’) or using attribution shields (‘people are saying’), thus avoiding responsibility for the content while helping it spread.”

Additionally, it recommends censoring links, not just accounts. “Platforms should also develop policies for addressing superspreading domains— domains that repeatedly host content with harmful misinformation that is mobilized and spreads widely in-platform. These domains should be subject to the same kinds of strikes policies, with escalating enforcement from interstitial labeling, to downranking, to suspensions (disallowing links to that domain) of varying lengths.”

The commission consisted of largely progressive commissioners including University of Washington professor and misinformation researcher Kate Starbird, Prince Harry and Katie Couric, a Daily Caller News Foundation review found.

Hurd was one of the Republicans on the commission, and he also served on a Cybersecurity Infrastructure and Security Agency (CISA) subcommittee dubbed the Protecting Critical Infrastructure from Misinformation and Disinformation Subcommittee. The subcommittee recommended to CISA in June 2022 that it should detect “informational threats,” collaborate with “non-governmental” entities to debunk “misinformation,” and expand research on it.

The DCNF previously reported that the subcommittee sought to enlist left-wing research groups and pro-censorship organizations in its attempts to clamp down on misinformation.

Additionally, the commission was completely financed with $3.2 million from Craig Newmark Philanthropies, the giving organization of the founder of Craigslist, according to the Aspen Institute’s website. Newmark endorsed Democratic candidates such as then-Sen. Kamala Harris of California and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, as well as donated thousands of dollars to Democrats in the 2020 election, according to the Federal Election Commission.

Further, the DCNF previously reported that Newmark’s organization funded a study accusing conservatives of spreading “disinformation” by alleging that Big Tech companies have an anti-conservative bias. The study also justified the social media censorship of the Hunter Biden laptop story.

Hurd and the Aspen Institute did not immediately respond to the DCNF’s request for comment.

Obama Says Trump Indictment Shows ‘Nobody Is Above The Law’

Harold Hutchison on June 22, 2023

Former President Barack Obama said on Thursday that the indictment of former President Donald Trump shows “nobody is above the law.”

Trump entered a plea of “not guilty” to all counts during his arraignment on June 13, after the special counsel secured a grand jury indictment on 37 counts, including violations of the Espionage Act, that was unsealed on June 9. “The fact that we have a former president who is having to answer to charges brought by prosecutors does uphold the basic notion that nobody is above the law,” Obama told CNN host Christiane Amanpour.

“I think I’m more concerned when it comes to the United States with the fact that not just one particular individual is, you know, being accused of undermining existing laws, but that more broadly, we’ve seen, whether it’s through the gerrymandering of districts, whether it’s, you know, trying to silence critics, through changes in legislative process, whether it’s the attempts to intimidate the press, a strand of anti-democratic sentiment that, you know, we’ve — we’ve seen in — in the United States, it’s something that is right now most prominent in the Republican Party, but I don’t think it’s something that is unique to one party,” Obama added. “I think there is a — a little less tolerance for ideas that don’t suit us.”

Republican presidential candidates, including Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, criticized the indictment of Trump, saying it was politically targeted.

Following the announcement that Hunter Biden would plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges and be placed into a pre-trial diversion program on a gun charge, congressional Republicans, candidates for the Republican nomination for president in 2024 and legal experts all criticized the plea agreement for Hunter Biden on gun and tax charges, which some called a “sweetheart deal” for the son of President Joe Biden.

“And sort of the habits of — of a free and open exchange of ideas and the idea that, you know, we all agree to the rules of the game, and even if the outcomes aren’t always the ones we like, we still abide by those rules, I think that’s weakened since I left office, and we’re going to need to strengthen them again,” Obama said.

EXCLUSIVE: GOP Lawmakers Alert FBI, State AG To ‘Service Centers’ Operated By Chinese Intel Arm In US Cities

Philip Lenczycki on June 22, 2023

Several Republican lawmakers have raised concerns to the FBI about a network of so-called “service centers” in the U.S. operated by a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) intelligence service that the Daily Caller News Foundation recently uncovered.

The United Front Work Department (UFWD) operates Overseas Chinese Service Centers (OCSCs) in at least seven U.S. cities, the DCNF previously reported. UFWD is a CCP “intelligence service” that specializes in “coordinating [foreign and domestic] influence operations,” according to the U.S.-China Economic Security and Review Commission. The seven U.S. OCSC branches are located in California, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, Texas and Utah, according to Chinese state media reports.

Republican senators John Cornyn of Texas as well as Deb Fischer and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska, along with Nebraska Republican Rep. Don Bacon, told the DCNF that they are in communication with the FBI about the seven U.S. OCSC branches. At the same time, Missouri Republican Rep. Ann Wagner told the DCNF that she has urged Missouri Attorney General Bailey to investigate the centers.

“I can confirm that our office is in touch with the FBI on this,” Sen. Cornyn’s aide told the DCNF.

Sen. Ricketts told the DCNF that if there are “espionage centers” operating anywhere in the United States, they must be shut down immediately.

“I have requested a meeting with the FBI in Omaha to discuss ongoing threats to our region,” Ricketts told the DCNF. “Nonprofit cultural groups across the country being used as a front for CCP espionage would be a huge betrayal of who we are as Americans.”

In addition to their Chinese intelligence ties, OCSC officials from the U.S. traveled to Beijing in January 2018 for a “work conference,” according to Chinese state-run media outlet Qiaowang. During the 2018 trip, OCSC officials met with Ministry of Public Security (MPS) officers at a police station in China’s Zhejiang province. It was there that state security officials demonstrated how they’re leveraging new technology to conduct “cross-border remote justice services” overseas, the DCNF reported.

MPS is China’s national police authority. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) says MPS also conducts covert “intelligence and national security operations,” including “illicit, transnational repression schemes” on U.S. soil.

It remains unclear if U.S. service centers use MPS technology, but OCSC branches in other countries variously serve as “Overseas Chinese Police Contact Points” for the MPS and even conduct “armed patrols,” the DCNF found.

Multiple lawmakers said the FBI has thus far not responded to their inquiries about the UFWD-operated service centers.

“Since these concerning reports first came to light, I’ve repeatedly demanded answers from the FBI,” Sen. Fischer told the DCNF. “It’s unacceptable that they haven’t responded.”

“As a member of the Appropriations Subcommittee that oversees funding for the FBI, I am exploring avenues to compel an explanation,” Fischer added. “We need clarity on what exactly is going on here. This is a matter of national security.”

Rep. Bacon also reached out to the FBI over the OCSC located in his district, which encompasses much of Omaha, Nebraska.

“We want answers from the FBI,” Rep. Bacon told the DCNF. “We’ve asked the FBI to update us and the community, and they have not thus far.”

Bacon attended several Chinese cultural events sponsored by the Omaha OCSC, according to multiple Chinese state-run media reports. For example, Bacon attended a Lunar New Year performance in March 2018 sponsored by the Omaha OCSC and several other Chinese government-tied entities, state-run media outlet Qiaowang reported.

“We have enjoyed a great working relationship with the local FBI HQ in Omaha, as well as many different law enforcement agencies, and none of them have ever highlighted any concerns to us in the past,” Bacon told the DCNF.

The FBI declined to comment on whether or not they were investigating the centers, but instead provided the DCNF a “general statement.”

“We’re increasingly conducting outreach in order to raise awareness of how some countries’ governments harass and intimidate their own citizens living in the U.S. This violates U.S. law and individual rights and freedoms, and will not be tolerated,” the FBI wrote.

Meanwhile, Rep. Wagner told the DCNF that she has asked Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey to investigate the service centers.

“The CCP has been trying to expand its influence globally and we must put a stop to any efforts to gain a foothold in America,” Wagner said. “Communist dictators can’t use American soil to go after courageous dissidents and innocent families, and we must continue to fight back against this regime’s dangerous ideology.”

“I have notified the Missouri Attorney General’s office about my concerns and I hope they take swift action to investigate this issue,” Wagner said.

A spokesperson for Bailey told the DCNF that they’d been contacted by Wagner and were “currently looking into the matter.”

“We cannot allow Communist China to operate intelligence centers across the United States,” Tennessee Republican Sen. Marsha Blackburn told the DCNF.

“We anticipate the CCP using these centers to further target those who stand up for freedom, oppress human rights and gather intelligence for Beijing,” Blackburn said. “Meanwhile, the Biden administration has allowed Communist China to set up a spy base in Cuba, fly a surveillance balloon across the USA, and bully Taiwan. It’s clear Biden doesn’t have the first clue on how to stand up to Xi Jinping and his totalitarian regime.”

JUDGE ANDREW P. NAPOLITANO: No Warrant? No Problem … We Can Spy On You Anyway, Feds Shamelessly Reveal

Judge Andrew P. Napolitano on June 22, 2023

In 1928, the late Supreme Court Justice Louis D. Brandeis characterized the values underlying the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as embracing the uniquely American right, and the right most valued by civilized persons, which he called the right to be let alone.

Today we call it the right to privacy. He also warned that the greatest dangers to privacy lurk in the slow and insidious encroachments upon it by zealots in the government.

Last week, the Biden administration’s director of National Intelligence caused me to recall Justice Brandeis’ warnings when she revealed that the 16 federal spying agencies that she nominally supervises have begun to do indirectly what the Constitution prohibits them from doing directly.

Since they cannot obtain search warrants from a judge to surveil targets without first demonstrating under oath probable cause of crime by the persons whose surveillance they seek, these zealots in the government are purchasing private data about every American adult from the corporations and entities to which we all have unwittingly surrendered it.

This constitutes computer hacking — and it is as criminal as if federal agents had directly broken into the computers of those about whom and from whom they desire personal data.

Can the government do indirectly what the Constitution prohibits it from doing directly? In a word: NO.

Here is the backstory.

The language of the Fourth Amendment protects the privacy of all people by affirmatively declaring that the right to privacy in “persons, houses, papers, and effects” may only be violated by the government by the use of a search warrant, signed by a judge, based on probable cause of crime sworn to under oath, and which specifically describes the place to be searched or the persons or things to be seized.

The language of the amendment, and the language of statutes and court rules written to implement the procedures for seeking search warrants, makes no distinction on the nature of what the government seeks — evidence of crime or evidence of foreign interests.

Stated differently, a fair and neutral reading of the amendment makes it clear that the probable cause and specificity requirements were intended not only to protect privacy from Big Brother but also to compel the government to focus on crimes after they occur, and not on predicting them.

The same two requirements — probable cause of crime and specifically stating what or whom is to be seized — also preclude the hated British colonial-era practice of using general warrants. General warrants did not require the government to show probable cause of crime, just governmental need and did not specify the place to be searched or the person or thing to be seized.

On the contrary, general warrants were issued so as to assist British agents, both law enforcement looking for tax evaders and intelligence agents looking for revolutionaries, by authorizing them to search wherever they pleased and seize whatever they found.

A typical example of all this surrounded the Stamp Act, enacted by Parliament in 1765 and repealed in 1766. This dreadful law required all colonists to purchase stamps; they were actually inked images of royal insignias transferred to a document for a fee.

The stamps were required to be on all documents in the home — papers, letters, books, pamphlets and posters — containing the written or printed word. How did the British government know if colonists complied with the Stamp Act? Answer: general warrants.

Thus, with a general warrant issued by a secret court in London enabling them to search wherever they wished and seize whatever they found, British agents entered colonial homes ostensibly looking for stamps but truly looking for revolutionary materials so as to anticipate who might rebel against the king.

It was against this backdrop that the Fourth Amendment was ratified. Any argument today that the amendment does not protect persons from all government, but only law enforcement, is historically disingenuous and intellectually dishonest.

When the Supreme Court last looked at all this in 2018 and ruled that the government needs search warrants to download or track mobile devices, it made no distinction between spies and cops; or cops acting like spies; or private persons doing dirty work for the government.

Even the late Justice Antonin Scalia, who famously argued for a narrow reading of the Fourth Amendment, agreed that it absolutely prohibits general warrants. Yet, that’s what the feds are effectively using when they spend tax dollars to purchase what the law prohibits them from acquiring.

They are indiscriminately seizing private data, without warrants, without probable cause, without identifying the data to be seized, without naming the persons they target and without even any articulable suspicion — the lowest bar needed in order to commence an investigation.

What kind of authoritarian mindset — from those who have sworn to preserve, protect and defend the Constitution — thinks this is somehow lawful and constitutional?

Yet, we have seen this before. The feds famously used Big Tech to stifle social media favorable to Donald Trump and unfavorable to Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential campaign.

This constituted government suppressing speech because of its content, which is prohibited by the language, values and current judicial interpretations of the First Amendment.

If the feds can get away with trashing the First Amendment, and the Fourth Amendment is useless and toothless, what’s next? Will they hire corporations to administer cruel and unusual punishments, which the Constitution prohibits them from inflicting?

Will they pay thugs to steal our weapons, which the Constitution prohibits them from infringing? Will they use gangs to deny us life, liberty and property, which the Constitution requires them to guarantee to all persons?

The late Justice William O. Douglas wrote that the Constitution was written to keep the government off the people’s backs. When the government cuts holes in the Constitution, it will break our backs. Unless we break the government first.

Second Catholic President To Put Abortion Access ‘Front And Center’ In 2024 Campaign

Kate Anderson on June 22, 2023

Catholic President Joe Biden is planning to bring his abortion agenda “front and center” during his reelection campaign, according to Politico.

Biden has been vocal about his pro-choice stance in the past and has called for Congress to pass legislation to make Roe v. Wade the law of the land after the Supreme Court struck it down last year. As Biden’s 2024 campaign continues, he is reportedly planning to make abortion a key argument for his electability, according to current and former White House officials who spoke to Politico Thursday.

“I think it’ll continue to be a really galvanizing issue, and we’ll continue to find ways to make it front and center,” Julie Chávez Rodríguez, Biden’s campaign manager, told Politico.

Ron Klain, Biden’s former White House chief of staff, also said he believed the White House was preparing to make abortion a “major theme” of the campaign as election day draws near.

“You’re going to have a Democrat, Joe Biden, who has stood up for a woman’s right to choose and is pushing for federal legislation to restore Roe v. Wade as the law of the land against a Republican who obviously has a very different point of view,” Klain told Politico. “MAGA Republicans [are] trying to roll back those freedoms.”

The statements come just days ahead of the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Center, which found that there was no constitutional right to abortion. Not long after, the president said that he would be working to bring back Roe through Congress and even scolded the justices over their decision as they listened to his State of the Union address in February.

Abortion has also been a hot issue for Republican candidates in the race as well. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and former President Donald Trump have gone back and forth on the subject after Trump criticized DeSantis for signing a six-week abortion ban.

Trump also faced heat from pro-life groups after he blamed the GOP’s poor performance during the 2022 midterm elections on Republicans for forcing the pro-life  issue.

California Pushes Bill That Allows Children To Seek ‘Residential Shelter Services’

Brandon Poulter on June 22, 2023

California Democrats advanced legislation that would allow 12 year olds to consent to being placed into residential shelter services by mental health professionals on Tuesday, according to the state’s legislative information website.

The state Senate Judiciary Committee approved Assembly Bill 665, authored by Democratic Assembly Member Wendy Carrillo and Democratic State Sen. Scott Wiener, in a 9-2 vote, according to the legislative information website. The bill would remove requirements from a current law that requires minors “present a danger of serious physical or mental harm to themselves or to others” or be an “alleged victim of incest or child abuse” to be able to consent to mental health treatments or “residential shelter services,” according to its text.

It would also allow mental health professionals to “consult with the minor before determining whether involvement of the minor’s parent or guardian would be inappropriate,” the text reads. The bill would make the changes effective in July 2024.

Critics attacked the bill and said it was a violation of their rights and would allow for kids to be emancipated at 12 years old, according to a video of the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting posted by the California Family Council.

“There’s been a lot of misinformation and lies about this bill to the point that it has national and international attention as to how we treat mental health services for young people in the United States and in California,” Carrillo said during the meeting.

Wiener said that citizens in opposition to the bill were part of a “right-wing outrage machine,” according to the video.

Denise Aguilar, co-founder of Freedom Angels, a civil rights group, called Wiener’s comments “gaslighting and name calling” on Twitter.

Carrillo and Wiener did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Top EPA Official Pushing EVs Can’t Say How Much Electricity America Uses In A Year

Nick Pope on June 22, 2023

A top Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) official tasked with guiding the Biden administration’s emissions regulation policies was unable to approximate how much electricity the U.S. uses in a year, despite his own agency pushing regulations that would effectively mandate widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and substantially increase overall electricity demand.

Principal Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Office of Air and Radiation (OAR) Joseph Goffman admitted Thursday that he did not know how much electricity the U.S. uses in a year when asked by Republican Rep. August Pfluger of Texas during a House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing on proposed EPA emissions regulations and Republican-sponsored legislation to counter them. Goffman’s admission regarding American energy demand comes as the OAR and EPA are pushing regulatory standards for American car production that would necessitate a large increase in electricity supply.

“How much electricity does the United States demand each year?,” Pfluger asked. “I don’t know that number off the top of my head,” Goffman responded.

“It’s 4 terawatts annually,” Pfluger said in reply.

The OAR is a subagency of the EPA that “develops national programs, policies, and regulations for controlling air pollution,” according to the OAR’s website. The proposed emissions regulations discussed at the hearing could make EVs “account for 67% of new light-duty vehicle sales and 46% of new medium-duty vehicle sales” in model year 2032, according to the EPA’s website.

Pfluger continued the line of questioning, asking Goffman to identify “the percentage increase in electricity demand if we get to the 2030 and 2035 mandates that your agency is pushing for and the administration is pushing for.” Goffman cited figures of 0.4% by 2030 and 4% for 2050 in response to that question.

Goffman’s cited figures stand at odds with estimates by Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm at an earlier hearing. Granholm had said that the Biden administration’s long-term push for EVs would “double our energy demand,” Pfluger said. When pressed for details regarding where the EPA expects to get that excess energy, Goffman responded that it would “come from a diverse grid.”

The U.S. would need to produce at least 20-50% more electricity than it used in 2019 if all cars on the road became EVs, according to analysis from USA Facts. Fossil fuels were responsible for about 60% of all U.S. electricity generated in 2022, while renewables only generated 22%, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Goffman’s admission came just one day after he conceded that he did not know how much the average EV sold in the U.S. costs despite his agency’s efforts to replace internal combustion engine cars with EVs.

The Biden administration allotted taxpayer funds amounting to $7.5 billion for EV charging stations, $10 billion for green transportation and over $7 billion for EV battery components in the bipartisan infrastructure law alone. The EV spending push is a pillar of the administration’s larger climate and infrastructure agenda. As a candidate for the presidency in 2019, Biden pledged a personal “guarantee” that his administration would “end fossil fuels.”

Yet Another Piece Of Evidence Contradicts Biden’s Claim He Knew Nothing About Hunter’s Foreign Business Deals

Arjun Singh on June 22, 2023

Text messages and witness testimony released by the House Ways and Means Committee on Thursday contradicts President Joe Biden’s earlier claims that he was unaware of his son Hunter Biden’s business deals with foreign entities.

Hunter Biden, who recently agreed to plead guilty to federal tax and gun crimes, was under investigation by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Department of Justice (DOJ) for several years. Whistleblowers from the IRS who spoke with the House committee claimed that the DOJ deliberately delayed investigations of Hunter Biden and provided the committee with text messages and witness accounts that Joe Biden knew of Hunter Biden’s business activities, according to transcripts of testimony released by the committee.

“I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight,” wrote Hunter Biden in a WhatsApp text message to Henry Zhao in 2017, per the released testimony.

In another part of the testimony, Rob Walker, an associate of Hunter Biden, told the FBI that Joe Biden attended a CEFC meeting to allegedly impress the Chinese executives and facilitate the business deal, according to the testimony. Walker also told the FBI that Hunter Biden had attempted to set up such meetings when Joe Biden was still Vice President.

“The American people deserve to know that when it comes to criminal enforcement, they are not on the same playing field as the wealthy and politically connected class,” House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith wrote in a statement, adding that the whistleblowers had been “retaliated against.”

Biden has previously maintained that he did not converse with Hunter about his foreign business contacts, saying so in 2019 after they first began attracting scrutiny. That denial was reaffirmed in 2022 after he became President, per the New York Post.

Legal and political commentators have pointed out the contradiction and demanded answers from Biden. Jonathan Turley, a professor of law at George Washington University, wrote on Twitter that “the brilliance of this trick [is that] the Bidens got the media to participate in the illusion.”

“Is anyone going to ask President Biden about this? It obviously contradicts his oft-repeated claim that he never once discussed Hunter’s business dealings with him,” tweeted Tom Bevan, the co-founder of RealClearPolitics.

The release of whistleblower transcripts comes as Hunter Biden’s activities have gained considerable scrutiny from multiple federal actors. Apart from the U.S. Attorney for Delaware and the Ways and Means Committee, the House Oversight Committee is conducting its own investigation into Hunter Biden’s business activities and probing Joe Biden’s connection to them.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
