Country Gives Priority To Certain Races For Surgeries In Bid To Reduce ‘Inequities’

Mia Hernandez on June 20, 2023

Patients that are members of New Zealand’s indigenous groups, the Māori and Pacific peoples, will take priority on elective surgery waiting lists over other ethnicities in an identical condition, according to The Guardian.

The equity adjustor is a tool being implemented in New Zealand hospitals that utilizes a point-scoring algorithm to weigh ethnicity along with sickness level, location and time spent on a waitlist, depending on the surgery, The Guardian reported. Public health specialists have said that the change is necessary to make up for inequalities that the Māori and Pacific people have experienced at other points in the health system.

The tool is meant to address “longstanding inequities in Māori health,” said Rawiri McKree Jansen, chief medical officer for Te Aka Whai Ora/The Māori Health Authority, according to The Guardian.

Auckland, New Zealand, has been using the new technology since February, but its use was made public on Monday and will be implemented in other regions of the nation, The Guardian reported.

“If you don’t make these courageous decisions, like introducing a ethnic dimension to the decision making, we’ll never make the changes that we want to make in terms of health outcomes.” said Collin Tukuitonga, associate professor of public health at the University of Auckland, The Guardian reported.

The use of the tool has caused political controversy in New Zealand, with the libertarian-right Act party and the center-right National being against ethnicity being a factor in treatment, according to The Guardian.

The health minister was asked to look at the criteria “to make sure that there is a reassurance that we are not replacing one form of discrimination with another,” said Prime Minister Chris Hipkins, The Guardian reported.

Clinical need “always takes precedence and the equity adjustor doesn’t interfere with that,” said surgical services manager Duncan Bliss, who developed the tool, to Newsroom.

Medical professionals have disagreed about the use of the tool. The new system has “disgusted” one surgeon, the New Zealand Herald reported.

“It’s ethically challenging to treat anyone based on race, it’s their medical condition that must establish the urgency of the treatment,” the surgeon said.

General Practice New Zealand did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

‘Green Colonialism’: Biden Admin Clashes With Native American Activists Over Lithium Mine

Will Kessler on June 20, 2023

Activists from the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation are speaking out against a lithium mine that is part of President Joe Biden’s clean energy plan, according to The Associated Press.

A $2.2 billion mining project, which will be one of the largest lithium mines in the world, is being constructed by Lithium Americas and supported by the Biden administration as part of the White House’s effort to shift away from fossil fuels, according to the AP. Activists criticize the project, calling it “green colonialism,” saying that the project will have negative environmental consequences for the surrounding area and not deliver on environmental promises.

“Lithium mines and this whole push for renewable energy — the agenda of the Green New Deal — is what I like to call green colonialism,” said Daranda Hinkey, a member of the Fort McDermitt Paiute and Shoshone Tribe, according to the AP. “It’s going to directly affect my people, my culture, my religion, my tradition.”

Lithium is a key component used in electric vehicle batteries, which the Biden administration has sought to promote as part of its push for half of all new cars to be electric by 2030.

“Despite Lithium Nevada’s characterization of the mine as green, the company estimates in the [Environmental Impact Statement] that it will produce 152,703 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions every year,” the activist group responsible for the protests, the People of Red Mountain, said on its website. “The water, air, land, wildlife, plants, and everything in between will all pay the ultimate price for lithium powered batteries for electric vehicles.”

Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland has previously commented on the project, saying that the DOI is in favor of the mine because it feeds “the need for our clean energy economy to move forward is definitely important,” according to the AP.

Lithium Americas, a Canadian mining company in charge of the project, has received criticism in the past from GOP lawmakers for having links to the Chinese Communist Party. The Chinese company Gangfeng was reported to own more than 10% of Lithium Americas, making it the largest shareholder, and has since split into two separate entities to avoid the criticism, separating its Latin American and North American operations, according to the Washington Free Beacon.

Chinese companies also dominate the electric vehicle supply chain, with China producing 79% of all lithium-ion batteries sold in 2021. China is responsible for the refining of 90% of rare earth metals, according to a 2022 report from the International Energy Agency.

The People of Red Mountain, Lithium Americas and the Department of the Interior did not immediately reply to a request for comment.

12 Dead, Over 100 Injured In Shootings Over Juneteenth Weekend

Erinn Broadus on June 20, 2023

A wave of shootings across the nation over Juneteenth weekend left 12 dead and over 100 injured, according to multiple reports.

A wave of shootings across the country over the Juneteenth weekend included six people who were wounded in Baltimore, 23 wounded in the Chicago suburb of Willowbrook and six teens who were shot in Milwaukee. In St. Louis, one juvenile was killed and nine others were injured in an overnight shooting at a party, according to CNN.

Gunfire erupted in a crowd of several hundred people in Chicago, wounding 23 and leaving one dead. Neither a motive nor an arrest has been made at this time, according to ABC News.

In Milwaukee, six teens were shot at the conclusion of a Juneteenth celebration, according to USA Today. The victims included four girls, ages 14, 16, 17 and 18, and two boys, ages 17 and 19.

“I think it’s important to point out the fact that this incident did not happen during Juneteenth,” said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “This happened after Juneteenth had concluded.”

“But still, it is totally, it is totally, totally unacceptable for the incident that happened right in this neighborhood, right in this community,” she said.

According to the police, the 17-year-old boy who was injured in the incident is the primary suspect in the shooting. The incident allegedly began after a fight broke out among the girls.

In Baltimore, six people were wounded on Friday night after a police officer heard gunshots. Officers then found six individuals with “numerous non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their bodies,” according to The Associated Press. All the victims are expected to survive. Three of the victims were transported to the hospital via ambulance, and three others walked into the hospital with gunshot wounds.

“Officers canvassed the area and discovered three male victims near the intersection of East Cold Spring Lane and York Road, all suffering from numerous non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to their bodies,” Lindsey Eldridge of the Baltimore Police Department told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

In St. Louis, one juvenile was killed and 10 others were injured around 1:00 a.m. during a party downtown, CNN reported. The 17-year-old suspect is currently in custody, according to Chief Robert Tracy.

“My heart goes out to all of the families in pain today,” said St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones. “All those attending will carry with them the scars, physical and mental, from the gun violence that tore into their lives.”

One of the injured teens was trampled as she ran from the scene, leaving her with serious spinal injuries, CNN reported. Neither the Baltimore nor St. Louis incidents occurred during Juneteenth celebrations. Officers saw a large number of individuals running from the building at 1409 Washington, the St. Louis Police Department told the DCNF.

“Multiple firearms were recovered at the scene, including AR style pistols as well as well as a handgun, which was found in the possession of the suspect, who was taken into custody by plain clothes detectives responding to the area,” the St. Louis Police Department told the DCNF. “A total of 11 victims suffered apparent gunshot wounds, including the deceased who is identified as Victim 1.”

The Willowbrook and Milwaukee Police Departments did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Dems Plan To Push Abortion Bills On Anniversary Of SCOTUS Striking Down Roe V. Wade

Ireland Walker on June 20, 2023

Senate Democrats are planning to push legislation regarding abortion access to mark the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, NBC News reported.

Democrats will present four bills that address access to contraceptives, the ability to travel without restriction between states for an abortion, data privacy and protection for doctors who perform abortions, according to NBC News. The bills are not expected to pass, but Democrats are hoping to make a point by forcing Republicans to revisit the topic and defend their beliefs on the record.

“Senate Democrats will force Republicans to go on the record once again, and explain to the American people why they refuse to codify our right to contraception, why they refuse to let women travel across state lines for lifesaving health care,” Democratic Washington Sen. Patty Murray said in a statement, according to NBC News.

Murray also claimed the overturn of Roe v. Wade, which occurred on June 24, 2022, caused “a full-blown health care crisis,” according to NBC News.

Democrats require “unanimous consent” for the bills to pass, which have not been obtained, NBC News reported.

White House officials will be in attendance at various events regarding abortion this week.

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will join the Democratic National Committee for an event on Friday with three activist groups including EMILYs List, NARAL Pro-Choice America and Planned Parenthood Action Fund, NBC News reported. Harris will be in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Saturday to host a speech regarding the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling.

ProPublica’s Top Donors Also Bankroll Activist Groups Targeting Justice Clarence Thomas

Katelynn Richardson on June 20, 2023

Nonprofit news outlet ProPublica, which published multiple stories detailing Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’ alleged ethics violations, has many of the same donors as multiple groups actively campaigning for Thomas to be investigated or to resign, according to tax documents reviewed by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Over the past few months, ProPublica has published several investigations into Clarence Thomas’ relationship with his friend, the billionaire real estate developer Harlan Crow. The stories detailed expensive trips Thomas took with Crow, Crow’s purchase of Thomas’ mothers home and Crow’s paying of private school tuition for Thomas’ grandnephew. At the same time, several of ProPublica’s top donors are also major financiers of left-wing groups running campaigns against Thomas. This includes organizations pushing for Thomas to be investigated in the wake of ProPublica’s reporting.

“It is no coincidence that several organizations smearing Justice Thomas are funded generously by many of the same donors,” Parker Thayer, an investigative researcher at Capital Research Center, told the DCNF. “The ‘pop-up’ public pressure campaign, where just a few donors pay dozens of ‘grassroots’ activist groups to give the appearance of broad public support for a particular issue, has long been a favored tactic of the Left’s wealthy special interests.”

The Sandler Foundation, which launched ProPublica in 2007 and is the news outlet’s largest donor, has given it almost $40 million since 2010 for general support. The Sandler Foundation has also given over $7.5 million to the Campaign Legal Center (CLC) since 2015 and over $6 million to American Constitution Society (ACS) for general support since 2010, according to tax forms.

The Sandler Foundation was formed by Herbert and Marion Sandler, who, according to Forbes Magazine, “instituted borrowing practices that were largely blamed for the housing market collapse.” Time Magazine listed the Sandlers among the “25 People to Blame for the Financial Crisis.”

CLC wrote a letter to the Judicial Conference in April requesting the body refer Thomas to the Department of Justice (DOJ) “for potential criminal and civil penalties” after ProPublica reported that Thomas did not disclose expense-paid trips he took with Crow—allegations that legal experts told the DCNF did not demonstrate wrongdoing. American Constitution Society President Russ Feingold backed this call for a DOJ investigation in April, and he argued Congress “has a duty to check the Supreme Court” by imposing ethics rules and “rigorously investigating violations of federal law and flagrant ethics lapses.”

ProPublica’s initial report on Thomas quoted experts from both CLC and ACS, including Kedric Payne, senior director for ethics at CLC and retired federal judge Nancy Gertner, who sits on the ACS’ board of directors.

CLC’s Payne argues frequently for Supreme Court ethics reform and testified as a Democratic witness during the Senate Judiciary Committee’s hearing on the subject in May.

In 2019, the Sandler Foundation also earmarked a $500,000 grant it gave to the New Venture Fund for a group called Demand Justice, which supports court packing and investigating Thomas, according to tax forms.

In April, Demand Justice’s Deputy Chief Counsel Katie O’Connor joined Democratic lawmakers in calling for “immediate ethics reforms” based on ProPublica’s reporting. During the press event, O’Connor called for Thomas’ resignation.

Demand Justice supports adding four seats to the Supreme Court, arguing that its current “6-3 Republican supermajority” is “putting our rights and our democracy at risk.”

“If the Sandler Foundation was willing to give $500,000 to a slimy partisan hit-squad like Demand Justice, why should we believe they didn’t request similar work from ProPublica, to whom they have given substantially more money?” Thayer told the DCNF.

ProPublica president Robin Sparkman told the DCNF the outlet “exposes abuses of power no matter which party is in charge” and receives “philanthropic support from donors of every stripe.”

“More than 40,000 people actively fund our investigative, nonpartisan journalism,” Sparkman said. “Our newsroom operates with fierce independence. No donor or board member is even aware of the subjects of our stories before they are published.”

“ProPublica’s reporting has spotlighted wrongdoing across the private and political arenas for more than 15 years, including unbiased reporting on Republican and Democratic officials harming the environment, gerrymandering, manipulating the tax code and engaging in a long list of corrupt behavior across the country,” Sparkman continued.

ProPublica donors also fund Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). The organization sent a letter to Thomas in May calling on him to resign.

The Silicon Valley Community Foundation gave over $8 million to ProPublica, $60,000 to CLC and $252,200 to CREW between 2014 and 2021, according to tax documents.

The Marisla Foundation has given over $2 million to ProPublica and roughly $1 million to CREW since 2016, tax forms show. The George Soros-backed Foundation to Promote Open Society has given over $3 million to ProPublica, $2.7 million to CLC and $2.5 million to CREW since 2011, tax documents show.

ProPublica’s initial Thomas article quotes Virginia Canter, CREW’s chief ethics counsel, while its article on Thomas’ grandnephew quotes Richard Painter, who joined CREW as Vice Chair in 2016.

“ProPublica seems to be taking marching orders from the same extreme left-wing donors who are also funding other left-wing activist groups making similar attacks on Justices,” Mark Paoletta, a Schaerr Jaffe law firm partner who worked on the confirmations of Justices Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, told the DCNF. “It’s all coordinated. ProPublica is just another left-wing attack dog and their motivations are clear.”

Paoletta, who is a close friend of Thomas, was mentioned in several of ProPublica’s reports; his relationship with Harlan Crow, particularly a trip for which he said he later reimbursed Crow, was a subject of ProPublica’s initial story on Thomas and Crow.

Other top ProPublica donors also fund left-wing organizations running campaigns against Thomas.

The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has given nearly $3 million to ProPublica, over $5 million to CLC, $808,000 to ACS and $703,000 to the Alliance For Justice (AFJ) since 2013. AFJ has been a leading voice in the campaign against Thomas and recently launched an ad campaign calling for his resignation.

In 2021, the Hewlett Foundation also gave $175,000 to Fix The Court, a group that advocates for reforms to the Supreme Court, according to documents obtained by the Washington Examiner.

The Ford Foundation gave roughly $20 million to ProPublica, $4.1 million to CLC and $500,000 to ACS between 2013 and 2021. The foundation also gave over $8 million to AFJ, which ran ads calling for Thomas’ resignation, according to tax documents.

The Ford Foundation also funded multiple groups behind campaigns calling for Supreme Court ethics reform in the wake of ProPublica’s reporting. This includes roughly $42 million to the Center for Popular Democracy and over $23 million to the National Women’s Law Center, according to tax documents.

The Marisla Foundation, the Silicon Valley Community Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Foundation to Promote Open Society, CLC, ACS, Demand Justice, CREW, Alliance For Justice, Center for Popular Democracy and the National Women’s Law Center did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The Sandler Foundation could not be reached for comment.

GOP Presidential Field Largely Silent On Whether Or Not They’ll Accept Donations From ‘Woke’ Corporations

Mary Lou Masters on June 20, 2023

  • Conservatives continue to boycott “woke” corporations, like Target, Anheuser-Busch and the Walt Disney Company, for taking left-wing positions on social and political issues.
  • Many GOP primary contenders either left the door open or remained silent as to whether they’d accept campaign contributions from corporate political action committees (PACs) affiliated with the “woke” companies, they told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
  • “Donations to the Pence campaign are evaluated on an individual basis to determine if there is alignment on principles and values,” a spokesperson for former Vice President Mike Pence told the DCNF in a statement.

The GOP presidential field was largely silent when the Daily Caller News Foundation asked if their respective campaigns planned on accepting contributions from “woke” corporations.

Once seen as natural allies, Republicans and big businesses increasingly find themselves at odds as the GOP’s base becomes more concerned with corporations pushing “wokeness” — most recently illustrated by conservative-led boycotts of Target for pushing “Pride” merchandise on children. The DCNF asked every GOP presidential candidate if they would accept campaign donations from “woke” corporate PACs.

The campaigns of South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson declined to comment. The campaigns of former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy and Miami Mayor Francis Suarez didn’t respond at all. The campaigns of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, talk radio host Larry Elder, former Vice President Mike Pence and former President Donald Trump did respond, but none said they’d refuse “woke” corporate PAC donations.

“Governor DeSantis enjoys broad support, including from Disney expats and even a former Soros employee who rejects the woke and embraces law and order,” Bryan Griffin, DeSantis’ press secretary, told the DCNF in a statement. “We will gladly utilize any contributions to oppose Soros’ (or Disney’s, or Fauci’s) agenda and benefit the American people.”

Though large corporations can’t directly contribute to candidates, political parties or PACs, their employee-funded, affiliated corporate PACs can, according to Open Secrets. Target and Anheuser-Busch‘s corporate PACs contributed to more Republican than Democratic campaigns in the 2022 midterms, and Disney‘s gave $61,000 to GOP candidates.

DeSantis has gone after Disney for the last year after the corporation criticized the governor’s Parental Rights in Education Bill for not being inclusive of the LGBT community. The governor signed legislation in February revoking Disney of their special tax privileges, sparking a months-long feud between the two.

“Nobody has done more to defeat the woke onslaught than Governor Ron DeSantis,” Griffin told the DCNF. “He stood up to Disney even when other Republicans criticized him for doing so and took Disney’s side. Thanks to Governor DeSantis, Florida is where woke goes to die, and he will bring that same fight to the White House.”

Target launched a “Pride collection” for the month of June, including clothing for babies and children’s books promoting LGBT ideology as well as “tuck-friendly” bathing suits. Anheuser-Busch’s Bud Light teamed up with transgender activist Dylan Mulvaney, whose face was pictured on their beer cans. Disney has been pushing LGBT and DEI ideologies into content for children, as well as in their theme parks.

Though Elder criticized the companies for alienating many Americans, he didn’t close the door to accepting campaign contributions from their corporate PACs.

“Target and Bud Light have a lot of explaining to do to the American people, and a lot of making up to do with freedom-loving Americans and caring parents,” Elder told the DCNF in a statement. “If they’d like to spend money to reach more patriotic Americans, have civil discussions and respect parental rights, I’m here to have that discussion. Unlike the radical left, I won’t be closed off to new ideas nor anyone who wants to have a civil, reasonable discussion — whether they’re woke or not.”

Pence’s campaign provided a less-direct answer and told the DCNF that campaign contributions would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

“Donations to the Pence campaign are evaluated on an individual basis to determine if there is alignment on principles and values,” a spokesperson told the DCNF in a statement.

Trump’s campaign did not answer the DCNF’s question, but instead offered a statement attacking DeSantis’ record.

“Ron DeSantis is basing his entire existence on fighting woke culture, but he is a walking hypocrite that tries to gaslight the American people in order to cover up his background,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told the DCNF. “As more and more voters learn about his abhorrent and disgusting past, the more he continues to sink in the polls like he’s done since getting into the race.”

Haley has been critical of DeSantis’ battle with the corporation, and slammed the governor for accepting “$50,000 in political contributions from Disney,” she said at a CNN town hall on June 4. DeSantis reacted to Haley’s remarks the following day and told Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade the contributions don’t mean he condones Disney’s politics.

“Somebody does a campaign contribution and you’re supposed to lay down for them? That is not how I operate,” said DeSantis. “People can support me or not support me. I call them as I see them, and if you have supported me but you’re wrong, I am going to do what’s right.”

PETER ROFF: Only Parents Can Solve America’s Education Crisis

Peter Roff on June 20, 2023

America is losing faith in its system of free public education. Test scores are down. Violence in schools is up. There’s a growing perception that things are out of control.

What’s odd about it all is how no one, seemingly, is interested in exploring why. State legislators don’t want to do it. Local school boards have other things on their minds. And the press is too busy covering real problems, like Donald Trump’s refusal to return classified documents to the National Archives, to spend any time exploring the reason kids are still being allowed to graduate from public schools without anything close to the mastery they need to get ahead in life.

Occam’s razor, named for its progenitor, 14th-century English philosopher and theologian William of Ockham, suggests the simplest answer is most likely the correct one. This would mean, one can infer, that the plight of our children is the fault of the teachers and administrators who run the schools.

Before continuing it is important to reflect on how teachers, especially, are like Members of Congress. Most voters believe, and have for decades, that while Congress as an institution is corrupt, moribund, and beholden to special interests, their representative is a fine, upstanding individual who is not part of the problem. That is also, the evidence suggests, how parents feel generally about the teachers whose responsibility it is to educate their children.

They too, it is reasonable to suggest, may fall victim to bureaucrats who, in telling them what to teach and how to teach it, end up perverting the process of education until our children’s minds are filled with mush.

Then again, perhaps not. It has been reported – but not as widely as it deserved – that some weeks back the Colorado Education Association, which claims to be the voice of 39,000 public educators in the Centennial State, adopted a resolution condemning capitalism. To wit:

The CEA believes that capitalism inherently exploits children, public schools, land, labor, and resources. Capitalism is in opposition to fully addressing systemic racism (the school-to-prison pipeline), climate change, patriarchy (gender and LGBTQ disparities), education inequality, and income inequality.

It is as alarming as it is illuminating. If most teachers in Colorado or indeed throughout the nation believe this, it becomes quite clear why the education system is failing our children. Those who teach are unable, unwilling, or unprepared to make our children see the world they are being prepared to enter as responsible adults.

Helpfully, and thanks of all things to the unnecessary pandemic-era lockdown of the nation’s schools undertaken at the apparent insistence of teachers’ unions and professional associations, parents have had enough.

There is no way to replace the learning and socialization lost to school closure. Leaders in some states like North Carolina, Oklahoma, Florida, and Arkansas are heeding the cries for help coming from parents by expanding education savings accounts and reforming the system so that education dollars follow the students rather than fund the systems.

To do this, they are showing great courage. They have taken on “Big Education” and in many places are defeating it by giving parents a role in deciding which school their child will attend.

As a practical matter, that means more and more children will be able to attend schools where Marxist doctrine is not presented as scientific fact, where a greater emphasis is placed on the “Three R’s” than the various ways to avoid pregnancy, and no one is going to be fighting over who gets to use what locker-room to shower and change after an athletic event.

Restructuring public education using free market principles like the supremacy of individual choice will break up the “Big Education” monopoly that is wrecking our children’s futures. Finally, after many years, there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

China In Talks To Conduct Military Training In Cuba: REPORT

Micaela Burrow on June 20, 2023

China is in talks with Havana to set up a joint military training center on the island just 100 miles from the U.S. coast, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing current and former U.S. officials familiar with the plan.

Washington has engaged with the Cuban government to forestall the plans amid concerns it could lead to an unprecedented permanent stationing of Chinese troops and intelligence assets on the island and give China deeper insightinto U.S. continental military assets, the WSJ reported, citing the officials. While the discussions have not concluded, they are at an advanced stage and follow recent revelations that China has operated intelligence outposts on Cuba since at least 2019.

China’s People’s Liberation Army has sought to expand its global military and logistics footprint through a program known as “Project 141;” established sites include a Chinese navy base in Cambodia and an obscure military facility near a port in the United Arab Emirates, a former U.S. official said, according to the WSJ.

If completed, the facility would be the first “Project 141” site to be established in the western hemisphere, according to the WSJ.

The White House did not comment when contacted by the WSJ.

Intelligence reporting on the joint training facility is “fragmented” but considered convincing among U.S. government intelligence analysts, although officials are ascribing the intelligence with differing degrees of urgency, the WSJ reported, citing the officials.

Meanwhile, Washington is hoping to smooth tensions with China as several high-profile scuffles, including over a Chinese spy balloon that transited across the U.S., further soured relations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with high-level Chinese officials, including President Xi Jinping, on Monday, touting progress afterward in discussions on several issues but coming away without achieving reactivated military-to-military communication channels.

Blinken raised concerns to Xi about Chinese intelligence operations in Cuba, according to the State Department.

The Biden administration characterized a June 8 report from the WSJ that described Chinese plans to establish a signals intelligence collection outpost on Cuba as “inaccurate”, without providing specifics. White House officials disclosednewly-declassified intelligence days later showing that China has established intelligence collection operations for years and conducted at least one major upgrade to existing facilities in 2019.

Recent intelligence suggests China intends to pursue “centralization” of the four intelligence sites in Cuba, although what the implications of that would be are not entirely clear, according to the WSJ, citing a U.S. intelligence report from earlier this year.

The Chinese Embassy in the U.S. did not expand further when asked about the joint military facility by the WSJ, and Cuba’s embassy did not respond to a request for comment.

Some officials say China’s relationship with Cuba and plans to upgrade military cooperation is meant to mirror how the U.S. approaches Taiwan, an island China claims as sovereign territory sitting roughly 100 miles from the mainland, according to the WSJ. The U.S. invests heavily in building up Taiwan’s military and has dispatched National Guard units to train Taiwanese troops.

The Department of Defense did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

American Medical Association Wants To End Mandated Reporting Of Pregnant Women Who Abuse Drugs

Laurel Duggan on June 20, 2023

The American Medical Association (AMA) has called for an end to the practice of automatically reporting women who abuse controlled substances during pregnancy during its 2023 House of Delegates meeting.

The AMA will now promote changes to child protection laws with the goal of ending mandatory reporting of women who are found to be abusing drugs, which the organization believes can deter pregnant women with addiction problems from seeking out health care due to fear of custody loss or incarceration, according to an AMA press release. The organization called for women to be reported to child protective services when clinical teams identify protective concerns, rather than automatically when a woman tests positive on a toxicology test or is diagnosed with substance abuse.

“Pregnant people in pain or struggling with substance use need comprehensive support and treatment, not judgment,” Dr. Bobby Mukkamala, chair of the AMA Substance Use and Pain Care Task Force, said in the release. “But judgment is often what they unfairly receive from some laws and statutes that imply any indication of substance use by a pregnant individual is automatically representative of child abuse. Research has found that non-punitive public health approaches to treatment result in better outcomes for both pregnant individuals and babies.”

The AMA also supports “harm reduction” measures to combat the opioid crisis including needle exchanges and safe injection sites, which allow users of illegal drugs to obtain drug paraphernalia free of charge and use them in a monitored environment.

The AMA did not respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Blue Sanctuary City Considers Shelling Out $40 Million Contract To House, Process Migrants

Jennie Taer on June 20, 2023

The city of Denver is considering paying a private contractor $40 million to house migrants, according to a proposal the city council is set to consider.

The Denver City Council’s Safety, Housing, Education & Homelessness committee will decide Wednesday whether to hand GardaWorld Federal Services a $40 million contract through March 2024 to help the city provide shelter for migrants, according to the proposal. The sanctuary city said it received 6,000 migrants as of April.

If selected for the contract, GardaWorld will provide shelter for migrants coming to the area. New arrivals have included those bused from the southern border by Republican Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who launched his effort in May.

“The site to be leased by the contractor shall provide shelter to up to 1,000 guests at any one time. Services to be provided from the shelter site include registration/intake and medical screening of newly arriving migrant guests, feeding of the guests, maintenance and security of the shelter site and the ability to separate families with younger children from the general population,” the city council’s proposal states.

“The contractor will provide reunification services to assist the migrants in reaching their intended destination, or to coordinate with local NGOs in transitioning to more stable housing in Denver, if the migrant has no intention of relocating to destinations beyond Denver,” the proposal says.

The cities of El Paso, San Antonio and Chicago have contracted Virginia-based GardaWorld for similar contracts, according to the city council’s proposal.

‘Completely Unresponsive’: US Regulators Open Probe Into EVs That Suddenly Lose Acceleration

Nick Pope on June 20, 2023

U.S. auto regulators have opened a preliminary safety investigation into a Hyundai electric vehicle (EV) model which has received numerous safety complaints for suddenly losing the ability to accelerate while on the road, according to Reuters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating about 40,000 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 EVs after the agency received at least 30 complaints from drivers who reported a dangerous and sudden loss of acceleration while driving the vehicles, according to Reuters. Drivers have reported hearing a “popping” noise, followed by a warning notification on the car’s digital dashboard and a subsequent loss of power which spans a partial reduction to a complete loss of acceleration power, according to Reuters.

The NHTSA said that it conducted interviews with affected consumers to confirm the details of the acceleration loss incidents, but it has not identified any accidents or injuries associated with the recurring problem, according to Reuters. The problem is thought to be the result of too much electrical current flowing through the vehicle’s chargers into its transistors, which in turn damages the vehicle’s charging system and ability to regain charge, according to Reuters.

One driver claimed in a report that he was using the car’s “highway assist” setting and traveling at a speed of 75 mph when “the car became completely unresponsive” on the freeway, according to Reuters. At the time of the incident there was a large truck behind him and another in the lane to his right, according to Reuters. “The car stopped accelerating, and (he) was unable to resume driving. (He) was forced to coast to a stop on the side of the highway,” the driver added in the report, according to Reuters.

A separate incident report describes a similar loss of acceleration in California. The driver heard a loud “pop” from inside the vehicle, and “within a few seconds (the) car lost speed rapidly, from 55 mph to 25  then a second later 22 mph,” according to the report.

Hyundai has acknowledged the preliminary safety probe into the EVs in question, stating that it will cooperate with the NHTSA inquiry, according to Reuters. The Korean auto company added that it plans to roll out a July service campaign to update software in the impacted vehicles and replace the deficient charging systems if necessary, according to Reuters.

Satanic Temple To Host ‘Let Us Burn’ Events At State Capitols To Promote ‘Religious Liberty’

Kate Anderson on June 20, 2023

The Satanic Temple (TST) announced last week that it is raising money to host a “Let Us Burn” music tour at state capitols.

TST is looking to bring Satanic Planet, described as an “experimental avant industrial band,” to different states in the name of “religious liberty” and “pluralism,” according to the announcement. The tour is designed to specifically respond to Christian musician Sean Feucht’s “Let Us Worship” concert tour, which has performed in several state capitols.

“According to law, the government must remain neutral regarding religious viewpoints when granting permission to parties seeking to take advantage of public accommodations,” TST wrote in the press announcement. “For this reason, the fact that public representatives have allowed Feucht to perform openly Christian events within state capitol buildings, leaves little in the way of a legal rationale whereby Satanic Planet might be denied.”

TST is looking to raise $15,000 for the tour and has raised nearly $3,000 with 53 days left to complete the goal, according to the announcement. The band’s first single “Baphomet,” a deity worshiped by multiple occult groups and TST’s mascot, was released in 2021 and the musicians often include “unbaptisms” during their shows.

“Feucht is openly a theocrat who courts the attention of politicians and seeks to proselytize through his performances,” Lucien Greaves, co-founder of TST and Satanic Planet frontperson, said in the announcement. “He has his opinions, and we have ours, but one thing the government can not do is preference his viewpoint over ours by giving him exclusive access to perform a concert on the Capitol grounds. That stage is every bit as much ours as it is his, so, in the name of pluralism and religious liberty, there are some state capitols that are likely soon to be hosting Satanic Planet shows.”

The temple also indicated that if their request was denied then they would seek legal action against the parties who decided to not allow them to perform, according to the announcement. TST instigated a similar campaign against Christian Good News Clubs in elementary schools by starting their own After School Satan Club, arguing that “the evangelical after-school clubs have created the need for Satanic after-school clubs to offer a contrasting balance to student’s extracurricular activities,” according to their website.

TST and Feucht did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Biden Admin To Spend Nearly $1,000,000,000 On Green Upgrades For Fed Buildings

John Hugh DeMastri on June 20, 2023

The Biden administration will spend nearly $1 billion upgrading more than 100 federal buildings with green technology like heat pumps and solar panels, using funds from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

The General Services Administration (GSA) — which manages the U.S. government’s properties —  is planning to make 100 federal facilities all-electric and 28 net-zero emissions, on a budget of $975 million,  according to The Washington Post. The GSA is hoping that will attract roughly another $925 million in private sector investment, bringing total funding to roughly $1.9 billion, in an effort to revamp 40 million square feet of federal property, which is roughly 20% of all buildings managed by the GSA.

“GSA is really trying to lead by example in these new kinds of buildings,” Jetta Wong, senior climate advisor at the GSA, told the Post. “If we can do it in the federal government, the private sector can do it, too.”

Among the planned updates is the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center, which the GSA intends to spend up to $13.5 million dollars to fully electrify, the Post reported. The agency will completely retrofit the building — the fourth largest under its management — installing 57,000 energy efficient LED lightbulbs, electric heat pumps, boilers and other green upgrades.

The administration’s spending could stimulate private sector demand for similar upgrades, Victor Olgyay, architect at electrification think tank RMI told the Post. RMI partially funded a study central to recent efforts by the Biden administration to regulate gas stoves.

“When the GSA says, ‘We’re going to replace this gas water heater with an electric heat pump water heater,’ that helps change the market and send a signal to the private sector,” Olgyay, told the Post. In some cases, however, such as laboratories and data centers, it could cost less to simply tear down and rebuild older buildings rather than attempt to electrify them, said Olgyay.

The GSA did not immediately respond to a Daily Caller News Foundation request for comment.

SCOTUS Declines Christian College’s Appeal Against Biden Rule On Transgender Housing

Katelynn Richardson on June 20, 2023

The Supreme Court declined to hear a Christian college’s appeal in its lawsuit challenging the Biden administration’s rule on transgender housing.

Last year, the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals declined to block a U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) directive on transgender housing that the College of the Ozarks argued “requires private religious colleges to place biological males into female dormitories and to assign them as females’ roommates,” finding the college lacked standing to bring the lawsuit. In an unsigned order Tuesday, the Supreme Court declined to hear the college’s appeal.

The College of the Ozarks filed its lawsuit in 2021 after HUD issued its directive in response to President Biden’s executive order redefining sex discrimination to include sexual orientation and gender identity, effectively making it so transgender individuals must be housed within dorms corresponding to their self-declared gender.

In his dissent, Eighth Circuit Judge Steven Grasz wrote that the agency’s guidance “skirts the rule of law and undermines our values.”

“This is especially true where regulated entities are placed under a sword of Damocles but are denied access to the courts because the sword has not yet fallen,” he wrote.

The college petitioned the Supreme Court to review the decision in February, arguing that the HUD rule “jeopardizes the College’s ability to function, causes emotional harm to students who rely on the College’s housing policies, and dissuades Christian students from attending the College.”

Nineteen red state attorneys general filed an amicus brief backing the college’s lawsuit in March.

Wuhan-Partnered School District Settles With Aide Who Says She Was Forced Out After Saying COVID Came From China

Reagan Reese on June 20, 2023

An Ohio school district has settled with an aide who sued after alleging she was forced to resign for saying COVID-19 originated in China, according to WCMH News.

The Olentangy Local School District settled with former study hall monitor Antoinette Evans, agreeing to wipe her file of all disciplinary records while Evans will not seek reemployment at the district, according to WCMH News. Evans sued in 2021 after she was allegedly forced to resign from her position at the school once an Asian student reported her for remarking that COVID-19 came from China.

“Can you believe that the coronavirus came from China and that China is making money from the sales of PPE [personal protective equipment] to the United States?” Evans said in April 2021 to a student.

District administrators told Evans that her comments were racist and bigoted, eventually telling her she would be dismissed from her job, WCMH News reported. Evans’ lawsuit sought $25,000 in damages, though the money was not included in the settlement.

The 2021 lawsuit alleged that the school district has promoted a progressive agenda teaching Critical Race Theory and promoting Black Lives Matter campaigns within the classroom, according to the Columbus Dispatch. Evans had been written up before including for telling a student that “Italians were lynched more than Black people and had it worse,” the outlet reported.

“There’s a certain relief that the litigation is over with, and people can move forward,” Hartman told WCMH News. “To what extent has there been vindication or not? The other side always avows, ‘Oh, we did nothing wrong.’ That doesn’t lend itself to good feelings moving forward.”

In May, the school district was ordered to turn over documents detailing its partnership with Wuhan School System in China to the Ohio Supreme Court, according to WCMH News. The school district partnered with the Chinese school system in 2019 to create a “cross-cultural exchange.”

In February, the U.S. Department of Energy concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic likely originated from a leak in a Chinese laboratory. The Chinese Communist Party has pushed back against the World Health Organization (WHO) attempts to look into the origins of COVID-19 in the country.

The Olentangy Local School District and Evans’ lawyer, Curt Hartman did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Cartel Made Mexican Politician Smuggle 92 Pounds Of Cocaine Into US, Lawyer Says

Jack Applewhite on June 20, 2023

Mexican cartel operatives forced a city councilwoman from the border town of Reynosa to smuggle drugs into the U.S. by threatening to murder her family if she didn’t comply, her lawyer said, according to Border Report.

Reynosa Councilwoman Denisse Ahumada-Martinez is being held in the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s jail in Edinburg, Texas, law enforcement officials said on Monday, according to Border Report. Ahumada-Martinez was arrested on June 10 at a Border Patrol checkpoint in Falfurrias, Texas, for possession of 92 pounds of cocaine which were concealed in the seats and door frames of her SUV, according to the criminal complaint filed against her.

Samuel Reyes, the lawyer representing Ahumada-Martinez, said the councilwoman was forced to drive the vehicle into the U.S. because operatives in Mexico threatened harm to her and her family if she did not cooperate.

“She had been threatened by individuals in Mexico that had threatened her some time back. And that the only reason she was transporting this vehicle was under threat of death to her and her daughters,” Reyes reportedly told Border Report. “She had no idea what was in the vehicle. It was a threat: ‘Take the vehicle,’ you know, ‘or we will kill you and your kids.’”

The federal case against Ahumada-Martinez was dismissed by a U.S. magistrate judge, but it is now being prosecuted at the state level, according to Border Report. If convicted, Ahumada-Martinez could face up to 10 years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) seized roughly 16,000 pounds of cocaine at the southern border between October 2022 and April, according to agency statistics.

Yet Another Top Official To Leave Biden’s DHS: REPORT

Jennie Taer on June 20, 2023

Another top Biden administration will soon leave the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), ABC News reported Tuesday.

Deputy DHS Secretary John Tien will retire from the agency July 20, according to ABC News, which cited an internal memo from the the deputy secretary. Tien joins several other agency officials leaving the administration in the coming weeks, which include Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) chief Tae Johnson, Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz and Acting Deputy Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Commissioner Benjamine “Carry” Huffman.

“After 26 years of combined federal service including three combat tours in Iraq and living apart from my family for the last two years, I have decided to return to Atlanta to re-join them there,” Tien said to the Department workforce in an email, according to ABC News. “When I depart from DHS on July 20, 2023, I will most fondly remember what the Secretary and I tried to do for the workforce to vastly improve the lives of our fellow employees in terms of pay, training, facilities, and technology support, all essential to improving morale.”

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas applauded Tien for his service to the agency in an internal memo to agency personnel, according to ABC News.

“On behalf of 260,000 of us throughout the Department of Homeland Security — across the country and around the world — I express our profound thanks to him for making our Department and all of us the beneficiaries of his dedication to country and qualities as a person for the past two years,” Mayorkas said in the memo.

DHS didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

‘Two-Tiered System Of Justice’: GOP Presidential Candidates React To Hunter Biden’s DOJ Deal

Mary Lou Masters on June 20, 2023

Several Republican 2024 presidential challengers weighed in Tuesday on the deal between President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter and the Department of Justice (DOJ) on federal gun and tax charges.

Biden will plead guilty to two tax misdemeanors and entered a probation agreement with the DOJ for a felony gun possession charge. Many of the 2024 GOP contenders criticized the deal as letting Hunter Biden off easy, as the younger Biden was able to avoid jail time, contrasting the legal treatment with that of former President Donald Trump.

“Today proves there is a clear two-tiered system of justice—one for Democrats and one against President Trump,” Trump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung told the DCNF. “As President Trump predicted earlier this month, Hunter was given a sweetheart deal that sweeps his crimes under the rug in a blatant attempt to interfere with the 2024 election. All the while, Joe Biden continues to be given a pass by his weak special counsel for his classified documents strewn all across his garage and in his Chinatown office building. The Biden Crime Family continues to show they are willing to sell out America to dangerous foreign actors in order to line their pockets with millions and millions of dollars.”

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis also criticized the DOJ for giving Biden a “sweetheart deal.”

“Looks like Hunter received a sweetheart deal and is not facing any charges on the massive corruption allegations,” DeSantis wrote in a tweet. “If Hunter was not connected to the elite DC class he would have been put in jail a long time ago.”

Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy criticized the plea deal in relation to the long list of Hunter Biden’s highly-scrutinized business dealings.

“The Hunter Biden plea deal is meant to induce a collective amnesia in the American public,” Ramaswamy’s campaign spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin told the DCNF in a statement. “Forget the audio tapes of the alleged bribe for Hunter and Joe Biden from the Ukrainian executive of oligarch-owned Burisma. Forget the ’10 for the big guy.’ Nothing to see here. No jail time for Hunter. And now the Administrative state can justify what it did to Trump. ‘Equal’ justice.”

Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley echoed the other candidates sentiment, and questioned Biden’s plea deal and the DOJ’s “double standard[s].”

“This plea deal only raises further questions about Hunter Biden’s crimes and the double standard of justice in our federal government. There is clearly a lot more the Biden family has to answer for,” Haley said in a statement.

Conservative radio personality Larry Elder slammed the DOJ for displaying a “partisan justice system,” and promised to review the “bad actors” at the department if president, he told the DCNF.

“The DOJ’s agreement with Hunter Biden, which will see him serve no jail time after pleading guilty to three federal crimes, is yet another example of our two-tiered, partisan justice system,” said Elder. “From the politically motivated prosecutions of Donald Trump and Daniel Penny, to the George Soros-supported District Attorneys across the country refusing to enforce the laws on the books, to sweetheart deals with the Biden family, our criminal justice system is broken. The status quo of ‘rules for thee, but not for me’ is totally unacceptable, and patriotic Americans need to fight back.”

Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson told the DCNF he’s looking forward to reaching a conclusion for the other allegations brought against Biden.

“The conclusion of Hunter Biden’s tax-related investigation by the admission of guilt is an important step in resolving at least a portion of the controversies over Hunter Biden’s business dealings,” said Hutchinson. “However, it is important for our country to have the whistle blower allegations answered and the U.S. Attorney and the Department of Justice should be transparent in stating clearly the status of the investigation; the reason for a 5 year delay in reaching today’s result; and how the investigation will continue and who is leading it?”

“If David Weiss, the Trump appointed U.S. Attorney has concluded the investigation, then the obvious question is whether a Special Prosecutor is needed to investigate the whistle blower allegations. There is a legitimate public interest in making sure all allegations are investigated and dealt with under the law,” said Hutchinson.

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s campaign referred the DCNF to his remarks from late March regarding Biden’s legal troubles.

“When I was vice president, my son wasn’t sitting on the board of foreign corporations. He was sitting in the cockpit of a fighter jet, serving the United States in the Marine Corps,” Pence told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo.

Former GOP Swing-State Governor Reveals His Next Project

Mary Lou Masters on June 20, 2023

Former Republican Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey is launching efforts Tuesday to promote free enterprise ideals, according to a press release.

Citizens for Free Enterprise named Ducey CEO to lead a “new national advocacy effort” to bolster and protect the free enterprise system across the country, according to a press release obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation. The former two-term governor is revamping the mission of the already existing conservative organization, and plans to engage individuals passionate about free enterprise in politics.

“One of my true passions is in promoting the economic foundation that makes America the land of freedom and opportunity. Our free enterprise system has lifted millions of people out of poverty and spurred remarkable innovation,” Ducey said in a statement. “Unfortunately, these principles are under attack and our organization plans to lead an advocacy effort that will motivate more people who care about free enterprise to get involved in elections.”

The conservative organization will operate out of all 50 states to educate and mobilize voters while targeting poor education and increased crime, which Ducey believes are risks to free enterprise, according to Axios. Ducey will utilize his political experience and network, paired with his previous business experience, to cultivate a conservative version of twice failed Democratic Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams’ organization, Fair Fight Action, which promotes voting rights.

Citizens for Free Enterprise was previously a super political action committee (PAC) for the founder of TD Ameritrade, Joe Ricketts, according to Axios.

Ducey is the former chair of the Republican Governors Association (RGA) and previously served as CEO of Cold Stone Creamery. Two of Ducey’s former colleagues from the RGA will help lead Citizens for Free Enterprise — J.P. Twist will serve as executive director and Jesse Hunt as senior communication adviser, according to Axios.

Ducey was first elected as the 23rd governor of Arizona in 2014 by roughly 12 points, and secured reelection in 2018 where he beat his Democratic opponent 56% to 41.8%, according to Ballotpedia. He was succeeded by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who narrowly won against Republican Kari Lake in 2022.
