International Ghost Gun Trafficking Operation Uncovered in Queens

by Leo Canega April 4, 2023
By Leo Canega

QUEENS, NY – District Attorney Melinda Katz announced todoay the indictment of a Queens man, Javon Fournillier, 27, and his Texas associate, Anthony Kyle Wilson, 27, for their alleged involvement in assembling and selling untraceable ghost guns in New York City and Trinidad. This case marks the first prosecution of an international ghost gun trafficking operation in New York State. The investigation was led by the district attorney’s Crime Strategies and Intelligence Unit, which has become a leader in seizing ghost guns.

According to the charges, Fournillier was identified in June as an online purchaser of ghost gun parts, which are unserialized, making the fully assembled guns untraceable. After executing a search warrant at Fournillier’s St. Albans residence in July, officers recovered a ghost gun and additional accessories. Further investigation revealed Fournillier also rented a storage locker in Jamaica, Queens, where more firearm components were found. Fournillier allegedly enlisted Texas resident Kyle Wilson to receive delivery of firearm components and ammunition that are prohibited in New York. Wilson then shipped the components to Fournillier, who paid him around $100 to $200 per shipment.

With the necessary components in hand, Fournillier allegedly assembled ghost guns at a cost of about $500 per weapon. He then sold the guns for between $1,000 and $1,800 to individuals in New York City and Trinidad. The defendants are facing over 600 felony counts, including conspiracy, criminal possession of a weapon, and manufacture, transport, disposition, and defacement of weapons and dangerous instruments. Fournillier could face up to 22 years in prison if convicted, while Wilson could face up to seven years.

Marketmind: Markets exhale after OPEC+ shock; RBA hits pause

by Reuters April 4, 2023
By Reuters

By Kevin Buckland

A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Kevin Buckland

Asian investors continued to weigh the impact of OPEC+’s surprise weekend decision to cut output, including what it means for bets that the Federal Reserve would turn less hawkish amid cooling inflation and a slowing economy.

Energy shares boosted Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s Kospi, which hit a two-month high, but Chinese shares dragged on the region, with Hong Kong’s Hang Seng a particular weight, led by declines for tech stocks.

Crude oil continued to tick up, but not at Monday’s pace, with Brent a little over $85.

U.S. Treasury yields steadied after the previous day’s steep slide, which had been driven by recession-level readings for the Institute for Supply Management (ISM) survey. That helped the dollar find its feet as well.

Money markets lay 2:1 odds for the Fed to hike by another quarter point over a pause at their next meeting in a month from now. By contrast, the European Central Bank is seen as almost certain to tighten by a quarter point at its meeting around the same time.

The outlook could be tested later on Tuesday when Europe producer price figures and consumer inflation expectations are due.

The Reserve Bank of Australia, for its part, decided to press pause on its year-long rate hiking campaign – as most economists had predicted – amid signs that inflation may have peaked.

Meanwhile, there was some optimism from the Asian Development Bank in a report released on Tuesday, which upgraded its projection for the region’s growth this year on the strength of China’s post-COVID reopening.

Geopolitically though, China is a wild card, at the same time offering itself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict while increasingly flexing its military muscle.

China has been for the first time keeping at least one nuclear-armed ballistic missile submarine constantly at sea, according to a Pentagon report. On the spy balloons that flew over sensitive military sites earlier this year, the Pentagon said it could not confirm an NBC News report that they were transmitting data back to China in real time.

French president Emmanuel Macron will attempt to navigate those conflicting personas when he arrives in Beijing on Wednesday for an official visit.

Singapore seen tightening monetary policy as inflation remains elevated

by Reuters April 4, 2023
By Reuters

By Chen Lin

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Singapore is likely to tighten monetary policy this month, for the sixth time in a row, amid persistent price pressures in the Asian financial hub due to global supply chain disruptions.

Eleven out of the 17 analysts polled by Reuters expect the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) would tighten its policy, perhaps for the last time in the current cycle in April, citing the need to tame the persistent elevated inflation.

Among the 11 analysts who see tightening, five think the MAS would steepen the slope only while six think that it would only upwardly re-centre the mid-point of the band.

Adjusting the mid-point is typically seen as a more “aggressive” tool than adjusting the slope.

Instead of interest rates, the MAS manages policy by letting the local dollar rise or fall against the currencies of its main trading partners within an undisclosed band, known as the Singapore dollar Nominal Effective Exchange Rate, or S$NEER.

It adjusts its policy via three levers: the slope, mid-point and width of the policy band.

“We firmly believe that policymakers were much more concerned about near-term price pressures last year. We see concerns shifting to the medium-term, hence the return to slope steepening,” said analysts at the Bank of America.

Six analysts expect no change to monetary policy at all, citing the weak economic outlook.

“Although inflation stayed above the official forecasts, domestic supply prices have slowed amidst falling import prices. Business expectations, the composite leading index and non-oil domestic exports have all turned negative,” said analysts at DBS.

“Given that Singapore is a price taker in the global economy, keeping the status quo on the SGD NEER policy is consistent with the trend of major central banks moving from dovish hikes towards hawkish pauses,” they added.

Singapore’s non-oil exports have contracted for five straight months.

The central bank is expected to release its next semi-annual monetary policy statement no later than April. 14.

The MAS has tightened monetary policy five times in a row, with the latest in October in a scheduled review. It typically holds two policy meetings each year though conducted it two additional out-of-cycle decisions last year as consumer prices surged.

Singapore’s core inflation has remained at around a 14-year high in recent months at 5.5%.

MAS has said core inflation was likely to stay at about 5% for the early part of 2023.

It has also projected a core inflation rate of between 3.5% to 4.5% in 2023, with headline inflation coming in at between 5.5% and 6.5%.

The government had projected gross domestic product growth to ease to 0.5% to 2.5% this year, from 3.6% in 2022.

Singapore removed all of its COVID-19 curbs in February this year and expects the tourism sector to recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2024.

Aide to former Maryland governor killed as FBI closed in for arrest

by Reuters April 4, 2023
By Reuters

(Reuters) – A fugitive and former top aide to former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan was killed in Tennessee after a confrontation with the FBI, the Washington Post reported, citing the former aide’s lawyer.

Roy McGrath, 53, who in 2020 was appointed chief of staff to the Republican former governor, was wanted for failing to appear in court last month on fraud charges.

McGrath had pleaded not guilty to charges of wire fraud and falsification of records in October 2021 and was released on bond, but he did not appear in court for his trial.

The U.S. Marshals Service, part of the Justice Department, said last month it had initiated an interstate fugitive investigation and published a “Wanted” poster of McGrath.

“The loss of Roy’s life is an absolute tragedy, and I think it’s important for me to say that Roy never wavered about his innocence,” attorney Joseph Murtha said, according to the Post report.

The exact circumstances of Roy’s death remained unclear. The Baltimore Sun said he was shot but it was uncertain whether it was self-inflicted or by the FBI.

The FBI said in a statement it was reviewing an agent-involved shooting, the Post reported.

“During the arrest the subject, Roy McGrath, sustained injury and was transported to the hospital. The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously,” the FBI statement said.

McGrath died in the hospital, the Baltimore Sun reported, citing William Brennan, an attorney for McGrath’s wife.

Hogan, who served as Maryland’s governor from 2015 to 2023, had considered running for the 2024 Republican nomination for president as a critic of Donald Trump. But Hogan announced last month before McGrath went missing that he would not run.

Hogan said in a statement he and his wife, Yumi Hogan, were saddened by the “tragic situation,” the Baltimore Sun reported.

“We are praying for Mr. McGrath’s family and loved ones,” Hogan said.

New Jersey detective justified in shooting at driver who tried to run down officers. court rules

by Conservative Times April 3, 2023
By Conservative Times

TRENTON, NJ – Today, a grand jury in Mercer County, New Jersey, has concluded that a detective’s use of force in non-fatal police shooting on February 12, 2022, was legally justified. The Trenton Police Department detective, Michael Gettler, discharged four shots at a driver, Jajuan Henderson, after Henderson accelerated forward at a high rate of speed and struck a parked car in front of him and a police car parked on his front driver’s side.

Henderson then immediately reversed at a high rate of speed, toward Gettler’s colleague, Det. John Carrigg, and struck a car parked behind him. The grand jury found Gettler’s actions were justified in accordance with New Jersey state law concerning the use of force in self-protection or for the protection of other persons.

The officer stated that he believed discharging his weapon was necessary for the protection of his life and the lives of his colleagues.

The grand jury’s decision comes after an investigation into the incident was conducted in accordance with the Attorney General’s Independent Prosecutor Directive, which ensures the independent investigation of criminal cases involving police use-of-force or in-custody deaths.

The investigation included body-worn camera recordings, photographs of the scene, ballistics, and statements from the officers involved. This statement was released to the public in accordance with the directive. The Trenton Police Department and the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office had a conflict, so the Union County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team investigated the incident.

Former Picatinny Arsenal officer, wife to be resentenced in juvenile welfare case

by Charlie Dwyer April 3, 2023
By Charlie Dwyer

NEWARK, NJ – The US Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit has ruled today that a former US Army major and his wife must be resentenced before a different district court judge for having endangered the welfare of their young, adopted children through a series of physically abusive and neglectful acts.

Carolyn Jackson initially received 24 months in prison, while her husband, John E. Jackson, formerly a major in the Army at the Picatinny Arsenal Installation in Morris County, New Jersey, received probation and 400 hours of community service.

The government appealed their sentences to the Third Circuit, which found procedural error and ordered resentencing. The district court then imposed a 40-month sentence on Carolyn Jackson and the same probationary sentence on John Jackson.

The Third Circuit again found procedural error and remanded the case for resentencing. At the third sentencing hearing in October 2021, the district court reimposed the same 40-month sentence on Carolyn Jackson and imposed a sentence of 18 months’ home confinement on John Jackson. The Court of Appeals agreed that the district court had failed to follow its directions in the process of imposing those sentences and ordered resentencing.

Jackson tornado confirmed as Ef-2 with 120-mile-per-hour winds

JACKSON, NJ – Jackson Township Mayor Michael Reina said he was relieved after learning that nobody was injured due to an EF-2 tornado with 120-mile-per-hour plus winds.

Reina met with officials from the National Weather Service on Monday as the federal agency investigated the damage to determine the strength and path of the twister that caused major damage to the northern part of the town.

The tornado and associated storm destroyed a sports bubble at the new Adventure Crossing sports complex, a warehouse under construction on West Commodore Boulevard and damaged multiple homes, cutting power to thousands for as long as 48 hours.

“I can’t say enough about the emergency response from our police department, fire departments, EMS, OEM and other volunteers who came to our aid,” Reina said. “They were the true heroes in all of this.”

Reina said he spent Saturday night monitoring the situation from inside the Jackson Police Department headquarters and was shocked to see the level of damage in the town the following day.

“We’re very fortunate that we didn’t have any injuries; this could have been much worse,” Reina said about the tornado, which tore through northern Jackson and ended in Howell Township.

Reina said the overall effort by residents, first responders, JCP&L, and others was amazing, with roads being reopened and power restored quickly.

The mayor also thanked Chaverim for bringing a freezer truck to the Jackson Police Department, which allowed residents to store their perishables while the power was out safely.

“The entire community came together to help each other; it was great to see the generosity and caring for each other in the aftermath,” Reina added.

Reina also warned residents to stay out of damaged areas and buildings. He noted township officials and the owner of the building on West Commodore is not sound and could collapse. A temporary fence will be built around the structure in the coming days, and Jackson patrol officers will make sure curious onlookers keep a safe distance.

The mayor also said the loss of the bubble at Adventure Crossing is a temporary setback on a project that is aimed at making the township a major tourist destination outside of Six Flags Great Adventure.

“You got jobs out there, damage, but the most important thing is that everyone is ok,” he said.

Reina added that two area power substations were damaged during the storm which compounded the efforts to restore power.
