BALTIMORE, MD — A mother and daughter from Brooklyn Park, calling themselves the “Lucky Ladies,” scored a $50,000 top prize in the Maryland Lottery’s Pick 5 game after playing a number combination for the first time.

The winning ticket, purchased July 7 at denton liquors in Caroline County, matched all five numbers in a straight $1 bet for the midday drawing. The winning numbers were 5-3-8-4-7 — a combination the mother said she chose on a whim from a store receipt.

The pair discovered their win three days later and claimed the prize at Maryland Lottery headquarters on July 18. Denton liquors will receive a $500 bonus for selling the ticket.

As of claiming the prize, the mother had not yet decided how she plans to spend the winnings.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A Des Moines man has been federally indicted on multiple charges related to sex trafficking and interstate prostitution following an unsealed indictment in the Northern District of Iowa.

Marlin Santana Thomas Sr., 49, faces eight counts — four counts of sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and four counts of interstate transportation for the purpose of prostitution through coercion and enticement, according to federal prosecutors.

The indictment alleges that between 2009 and 2015, Thomas used force, fraud and coercion to compel four adult women to engage in commercial sex acts within the Northern District of Iowa and other locations. Prosecutors also say he transported the women from Iowa to Illinois and North Dakota for prostitution purposes.

Each count of sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison and a maximum of life, along with a minimum of five years to life of supervised release. A conviction would also mandate restitution and could include a fine of up to $250,000.

The FBI and Des Moines Police Department led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Emily Nydle and Trial Attorney Slava Kuperstein of the Civil Rights Division’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit are prosecuting the case.

The FBI is requesting that anyone with information related to Thomas contact its Omaha Field Office at (402) 493-8688.

Thomas faces federal charges that could bring life in prison if convicted.

BENSALEM, Pa. — Bensalem Township police officers can now purchase up to five years of service credit for prior law enforcement work, following the passage of a new ordinance signed into law by Mayor Joe DiGirolamo.

The ordinance, approved unanimously by the Township Council, aligns with Pennsylvania Act 49 of 2024 and amends the township’s police pension plan. It enables officers with prior service in other jurisdictions to apply that time toward retirement eligibility, similar to existing benefits offered to military veterans.

“This ordinance will allow officers who have previously served in other jurisdictions to purchase up to five years of prior police service,” the township announced, noting the measure will help officers retire earlier.

Director of Public Safety William McVey, who supported the ordinance, credited the mayor and council for backing the initiative.

“The passage of this ordinance is another example of Mayor DiGirolamo’s and the Council’s unwavering support of the members of our police department,” McVey said.

The ordinance was developed in collaboration with the Mayor’s Administration, Police Benevolent Association President Chris Terinoni, and Bensalem’s command staff.

AKRON, Ohio — Gunfire broke out early Sunday morning during an attempted home break-in on the city’s west side, with multiple shootings reported over several hours, Akron Police said.

Officers responded around 3:05 a.m. to the 800 block of Stadelman Avenue after reports of shots fired. A 24-year-old woman told officers she saw two armed suspects trying to break into her home via her Ring camera app. She was not home at the time but drove back to the property and confronted the suspects.

Police said one suspect fired two shots into the air, prompting the woman to leave. She reported being followed by two vehicles, including a black Cadillac Escalade. When she returned home, the Escalade’s occupants allegedly opened fire. The woman fired back before the suspects fled the scene.

Roughly three hours later, additional shots were fired at her home. Detectives from the Major Crimes and Crime Scene Units recovered more than 15 shell casings from the driveway.

One suspect, captured on surveillance footage, is described as a light-skinned Black male between 15 and 20 years old. He was last seen wearing a mask, a white tank top, and jeans.

TRENTON, N.J. — New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced Monday that the state has joined a coalition of 20 others in a federal lawsuit to stop what it calls an unlawful move by the federal government to restrict access to key social services based on immigration status.

The lawsuit targets a set of rules issued earlier this month by the U.S. Departments of Health and Human Services, Education, Labor, and Justice that reinterpret the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA). The new rules prohibit state-run programs from using federal funds to serve individuals unable to verify immigration status — a shift from previous federal policy spanning decades and both parties.

“The Trump Administration’s attempt to block our residents from accessing Head Start, community health centers, anti-poverty clinics, and other critical programs is as illegal as it is immoral and reckless,” said Attorney General Platkin. “This last-minute rule change will prevent American citizens, legal permanent residents, and visa holders from receiving services that are funded by Congress.”

The challenged directives took effect with little or no notice starting July 10, and impact programs such as Head Start, Title X family planning, community health centers, youth workforce development, adult education, and mental health services. Many providers, not designed to collect immigration data, now face compliance challenges that could lead to lost funding or closure.

In New Jersey, the affected services include substance abuse and mental health clinics, domestic violence intervention programs, youth job development, and soup kitchens. Officials warn the rule change could deter people from seeking assistance and further strain systems already under pressure.

The lawsuit alleges the federal government violated the Administrative Procedure Act by skipping required procedures and misapplying PRWORA. It also argues the rules violate the Constitution’s Spending Clause by imposing new conditions on funding without adequate notice or consent.

The coalition is asking the court to block the rules, declare them unlawful, and reinstate previous federal guidance that permitted broader access to programs regardless of immigration status.

Lottery scratch off tickets for sale

FREDERICK, Md. — A retired federal employee from Frederick has won $50,000 on a Maryland Lottery scratch-off ticket — marking the second major prize of her life.

The woman, who asked not to be named, previously won $100,000 in August 2021 from a bingo scratch-off purchased at a grocery store in Frederick. Her latest win came on a $20 $50,000 CASH ticket bought at the Washingtonian Express convenience store.

“That this could happen to me again, it’s just mind-boggling,” she told Lottery officials, recalling the urge to shout when she realized she’d hit another jackpot. “The store was crowded so I fought back the urge to shout it out.”

The win was unintentional. She explained that she had meant to purchase two tickets but accidentally hit the quantity button a third time. Instead of canceling, she went through with the extra ticket — which turned out to be the winner.

“This whole thing was an accident,” she said. “I decided to buy that third ticket and, as luck would have it, that ticket turned out to be the ticket.”

The $50,000 CASH scratch-off launched in December 2022 with 160 top prizes. As of Monday, 98 of those have been claimed, with 62 top prizes and 72 $5,000 second-tier prizes still in circulation.

The Frederick County winner plans to keep this win as quiet as possible.

A mistaken tap of a button led to a $50,000 prize for one lucky Maryland Lottery veteran.

Police said the preliminary investigation indicates McGovern failed to yield to traffic that had the right of way.

“We continue to see fatal and injury crashes where pedestrians failing to obey basic traffic laws are a contributing factor,” said VBPD Chief Paul Neudigate. “We urge everyone, both drivers and pedestrians to remain alert, follow traffic laws, and prioritize safety.”
