McALLEN, TX – A suspected human smuggler is in federal custody after a high-speed chase ended in a crash with law enforcement and the capture of five undocumented migrants near the Texas-Mexico border on Tuesday morning.

Cesar Rafael Leon, 34, of Pharr, allegedly picked up five individuals who had just crossed the Rio Grande River by raft in Mercedes. According to federal charges, when law enforcement attempted a traffic stop, Leon refused to pull over, triggering a 15-minute pursuit.

The chase ended in a shopping plaza in Weslaco, where Leon was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit. The five undocumented migrants were also detained.

Leon is expected to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Scott Hacker in federal court. He faces federal human smuggling charges, including an enhancement for endangering lives, which carry a maximum sentence of 20 years and a $250,000 fine.

Investigators from Border Patrol, Texas DPS, the Hidalgo County Constable’s Office, and the Hidalgo County District Attorney’s Office participated in the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Devin V. Walker is prosecuting.

FREDERICK, MD – A 41-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to first-degree assault for violently attacking his partner in a domestic dispute that sent her to the hospital with visible injuries.

Logan Hakeem Young was handed a 25-year sentence in Frederick County Circuit Court, with all but 12 years suspended. Judge Theresa Adams imposed the maximum sentence within Maryland’s guidelines, following a guilty plea entered on April 30.

The charges stem from an incident on August 24, when Frederick police responded around 11 a.m. to a residence on Eagle Rock Lane. A 32-year-old woman reported being strangled and punched repeatedly in the face by Young, her partner, earlier that morning. She also stated that he threatened her with a weapon.

When officers arrived, they found physical signs consistent with strangulation and assault. The victim was transported to Frederick Health Hospital by EMS for treatment. Young was found and arrested at a nearby diner later that afternoon at 3:20 p.m.

In court, prosecutors read the victim’s statement, where she reflected on the aftermath of the assault, saying, “I ignored warning signs; it cost me my safety.”

The State’s Attorney’s Office emphasized the heightened danger associated with strangulation in domestic violence cases.

Seaside Heights, NJ – Waves churned and currents ripped along the Jersey Shore for days, pulling swimmers into trouble from Seaside Park to Barnegat Inlet, and on Monday night, the danger turned deadly in Seaside Heights.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., swimmers at the unguarded Webster Avenue Beach were caught in a rip current strong enough to sweep multiple people beyond reach.

With lifeguards already off duty for the day, witnesses called 911, prompting the Seaside Heights Fire Department to launch two rescue jet skis into the rough surf.

Five swimmers were brought to shore and taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River. One man did not survive. His identity has not yet been released. The other four are reported to be in stable condition.

The fatal incident capped a hazardous stretch along the Jersey Shore that began on Saturday. Seaside Park emergency crews were dispatched to multiple beach entrances — including 9th, 21st, 24th, and Lafayette avenues — for swimmers in distress.

While those rescues unfolded, another emergency came from the Barnegat Inlet, where a vessel carrying three people began taking on water. Fire departments from Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, and Barnegat Light coordinated a marine response to bring the boaters to safety.

Seaside Heights Fire Chief William Rumbolo said Monday’s fatality came after at least 10 other rip current rescues in the area over the weekend. Lifeguards, who typically leave around 5 p.m., were not on duty at the time of the Monday evening rescue.

The weekend’s string of emergencies underscores the risks of late-day and off-guard swimming during strong surf conditions, which can rapidly overwhelm even experienced swimmers.
