UDAIPUR/MUMBAI, India – Indian police made fresh arrests on Saturday over the murder of a Hindu tailor in Rajasthan, which sparked tensions between the Hindu majority and Muslim minority and a clampdown on protests and the Internet to prevent them from escalating.

Two Muslim men already under arrest for the murder, who filmed the act and posted it online, said it had been a response to the victim’s support for a politician’s derogatory remarks about the Prophet Mohammad.

The victim, Kanhaiya Lal Teli, had allegedly made a social media post supporting Nupur Sharma, a former spokesperson for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s party, who made anti-Islam comments in May.

Three senior police officials said on Saturday that two more Muslim men based in Rajasthan were being held for planning Teli’s murder in his shop in Udaipur, a popular tourist destination.

“We have now arrested the two masterminds, and previously we had arrested two men who committed the heinous crime,” said Prafulla Kumar, a senior police official based in Udaipur.

Kumar said internet services were being gradually restored and security forces continued to be on alert.

An angry mob including some lawyers slapped and shoved the four accused in the murder case when they were presented before a trial court on Saturday.

Judges from the Supreme Court of India said on Friday Sharma must apologise to the whole nation after her remarks intensified religious fault lines in India, angered Islamic nations and triggered diplomatic strains.

Local media reported a separate incident on June 21 in which a chemist was stabbed to death in the western state Maharashtra for allegedly supporting the remarks made by Sharma on social media.

“Five persons were arrested in connection with the murder of the chemist, and a search is on to trace the prime accused,” Aarti Singh, a chief regional police official, was quoted by local press as saying.

PLEA REJECTED

Singh said the reasons behind the murder were yet to be ascertained.

At least two demonstrators were shot and killed by police in India during protests against Sharma’s comments.

In Afghanistan, the militant group Islamic State last month claimed an attack on a Sikh temple that killed at least two people and injured seven was in response to insults levelled at the Prophet Mohammad in India.

Police in New Delhi arrested journalist Mohammed Zubair, a vocal critic of the Modi government, who had helped draw attention to Sharma’s remarks through his fact-checking website Alt News and on social media.

Zubair’s bail plea was rejected on Saturday and a local court sentenced him to two weeks’ custody, a court order said.

The National Investigative Agency (NIA) – India’s top anti-terrorism agency – said it is carrying out a probe into Teli’s killing.

A senior NIA official in New Delhi said agents were questioning Muslims linked with the four accused in Udaipur to identify whether they had links with militant networks.

Muslims living about 3 kilometres from the tailor’s shop said they felt nervous and feared a social and economic boycott by powerful Hindus residing in Udaipur.

“I know what has been done is barbaric, but the community should not be held responsible for the deed of two people,” said Mohammad Farukh, a medical representative living in a Muslim-dominated area of the city.

The All India Muslim Personal Law Board called the incident “highly condemnable”, adding that it was against both Indian law and Islamic strictures.

(Corrects paragraph 15 to attribute testimony about Trump throwing a plate to Cassidy Hutchinson, not Kayleigh McEnaney; corrects name of judge in paragraph two to David Carter, not Andrew Carter)

By Luc Cohen

NEW YORK – A U.S. congressional committee probing the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol has sought to build a case that then-President Donald Trump behaved illegally when he sought to overturn his 2020 electoral defeat, but what charges might prosecutors bring against Trump and how might he defend himself?

Here are some ideas being floated now:

OBSTRUCTING AN OFFICIAL PROCEEDING

In a March 2 court filing, the committee detailed Trump’s efforts to persuade then-Vice President Mike Pence to either reject slates of electors for Joe Biden, who won the election, or delay a congressional count of those votes..

The president’s efforts likely violated a federal law making it illegal to “corruptly” obstruct any official proceeding, or attempt to do so, said David Carter, the California federal judge overseeing the case.

Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to then-White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, said Trump dismissed concerns that some supporters gathered for his fiery speech outside the White House that day carried AR-15-style rifles, instead asking security to stop screening attendees with magnetometers so the crowd would look larger.

She testified Trump demanded to be taken to the Capitol to join supporters rioting ahead of Pence’s expected certification of the vote and tried to grab the steering wheel when his security detail insisted on returning him to the White House.

Hutchinson said the conversation was relayed to her by Tony Ornato, a senior Secret Service official who was Trump’s deputy chief of staff for operations.

Ilya Somin, professor of law at George Mason University, said the testimony could “bolster the chances of indicting and convicting Trump, especially insofar as some potential charges hinge on his motives and state of mind.”

Trump denied Hutchinson’s account in a statement posted on Truth Social, his social media app, and called her story about him grabbing the steering wheel “fake” and “fraudulent.” Trump has accused the committee of conducting a “sham investigation.”

The New York Times and NBC, citing sources in the Secret Service, said the head of Trump’s security detail, Robert Engel, and the limousine driver were prepared to testify under oath that Trump never lunged for the steering wheel.

CONSPIRACY TO DEFRAUD THE UNITED STATES

In the March 2 filing, the committee said it was likely that Trump and others conspired to defraud the United States, which criminalizes any effort by two or more people to interfere with governmental functions “by deceit, craft or trickery.”

In addition to Trump’s efforts to pressure Pence, the committee cited his attempts to convince state election officials, the public and members of Congress that the 2020 election was stolen, even though several of his allies told him there was no evidence of fraud.

According to Hutchinson’s testimony, Trump’s White House press secretary at the time, Trump was so enraged by then-Attorney General Bill Barr’s interview with the Associated Press saying there was no evidence of election fraud that Trump threw his lunch at the wall, breaking a porcelain dish and leaving ketchup dripping down the wall.

SEDITIOUS CONSPIRACY?

Prosecutors already have charged more than a dozen members of the far-right Proud Boys and Oath Keepers groups who were at the Jan. 6 riot with seditious conspiracy, a rarely used statute that makes it illegal to overthrow the U.S. government by force.

To prove seditious conspiracy, prosecutors would need to show Trump conspired with others to use force, said Barbara McQuade, a law professor at the University of Michigan and a former federal prosecutor.

“While her testimony is consistent with that theory, it does not alone establish it,” McQuade said.

OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

At the end of Hutchinson’s testimony, Representative Liz Cheney, a Republican, presented possible evidence of witness tampering and obstruction of justice.

Cheney showed messages to unidentified witnesses advising them that an unidentified person would be watching their testimony closely and expecting loyalty.

If the committee has evidence that the people who sent the messages had a “tacit understanding” with Trump, prosecutors could use it to show there was a conspiracy to tamper with witnesses, said Daniel Medwed, a law professor at Northeastern University in Boston.

“They were setting the table for witness tampering and likely have other witnesses coming in to nail that down,” he said.

The fact that Cheney did not identify the sender of the messages suggests it may be “more of a shot across the bow to get the person to knock it off,” McQuade said.

TRUMP’S DEFENSE?

Trump has repeatedly denied doing anything illegal in connection with the Jan. 6 events.

If the Justice Department brings charges, prosecutors’ main challenge will be proving that Trump acted with corrupt intent, experts said.

Trump could argue he sincerely believed that he won the election and that his well-documented efforts to pressure Pence and state election officials were not meant to obstruct Congress or defraud the United States, but to protect the election’s integrity.

Hutchinson’s account could make it more difficult for Trump to assert this defense, Medwed said.

“Prior to (Tuesday’s) disclosures, the biggest hurdle to charging Trump related to mental state: to proving that he intended to obstruct an official proceeding or to agree with others to defraud the U.S. or foment rebellion,” Medwed said.

“(Tuesday’s) testimony offered powerful circumstantial evidence that it was his intent to do those things.”

DOES THIS MEAN TRUMP WILL BE CRIMINALLY CHARGED?

No. Neither Carter nor the committee can charge Trump with federal crimes. That decision must be made by the Justice Department, led by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

The department is conducting its own sprawling investigation of the Jan. 6 events, but has not signaled whether it intends to indict Trump, a decision that could have enormous political consequences as Trump weighs another run for the presidency in 2024. The department did not respond to a request for comment.

MEXICO CITY -Mexico’s environment ministry said on Friday it rejected a key environmental permit for a solar power plant that German automaker Audi has proposed to build at its factory in the central Mexican state of Puebla.

Audi’s proposed environmental impact statement for the photovoltaic power plant, sent to officials in late May, was denied because it requires a regional analysis given additional electrical infrastructure that will be needed, the ministry said in a brief statement.

“From their initial conception, these types of projects require the establishment of a power station, an electric substation and internal transmission lines,” it said.

The ministry added it will evaluate any new environmental impact statement for the solar plant that Audi submits.

Audi is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG.

Audi Mexico said the solar panels it hoped to build were intended for self-consumption only and would be used “exclusively to carry out part of the power consumption that enable the global production of the Audi Q5.”

“Audi Mexico is highly respectful of all legal requirements in the country, so it’s cross-checking the authorization of the already existing transmission station with the delivery of the additional documentation requested by the competent authorities,” the company told Reuters in a statement on Saturday.

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ – Jackson Township police have announced the addition of three officers to the department’s motorcycle unit.

According to the department, four officers have recently graduated from the Philadelphia Highway Patrol Motorcycle School.

“Officers had to endure this very exhaustive and demanding 80 hour training course which tested their riding capabilities and in turn earned them their Highway Wings,” the department said. “These Wings symbolize the qualifications of the motor officer, not only skilled in the safe operation of the police motorcycle, but professional character, integrity and appearance.”

Officers Robert Reiff, Randall Trasky, Matthew Colangelo and Tristan Bennett have successfully completed their training and earned their wings.

The 2022 Outlander has earned outstanding customer and media accolades since launching in February of 2021. In that time, the seven-passenger SUV marked its best-four consecutive-quarters of retail-only sales since the nameplate was introduced in the U.S. more than 20 years ago. April represented the fourth-best single retail month ever for Outlander.

Other notable sales successes included Eclipse Cross, with 5,712 retail sales in the first half, up 31% over the same period last year, and Outlander PHEV, with 1,126 retail sales across the first half of the year, a 76% improvement over the first half of 2021.

Total vehicle sales across the entire Mitsubishi lineup stands at 21,872 for the quarter, with Outlander representing 46.8% % of total sales by volume – followed by Outlander Sport at 22.4% and Eclipse Cross at 7.9%.

As is the case across the industry, MMNA’s dealer partners continue to see inventory impacted by supply chain challenges and remain well below customer demand.

News and Notes

  • Mitsubishi Motors’ all-new 2023 Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) was displayed at the Twin Cities Auto Show, a logical event given that the St Paul metro area is the largest single market in the U.S. for Outlander PHEV. Outlander PHEV is the world’s best-selling plug-in hybrid SUV. The all-new, seven-seat, plug-in hybrid will be available in dealerships later this year.
  • MMNA announced an industry-leading work-from-home policy earlier this year, a benefit more common among cutting-edge technology companies than automotive brands.
  • On June 1, MMNA formally kicked off its partnership with Santander Consumer, USA, to provide retail financing and leasing options to its customers and dealer partners. Santander brings extensive experience in auto financing, and a clear focus on helping Mitsubishi Motors’ customers.

NEW YORK, July 1, 2022 — What do progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, conservative Rep. Liz Cheney, actor Matt Damon, Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch and cellist Yo-Yo Ma all have in common?

They have all been guests on PBS’ FIRING LINE WITH MARGARET HOOVER, which launches its fifth season this Friday.

The program — a relaunch of the iconic William F. Buckley Jr. program by the same name — is known for host Margaret Hoover’s newsmaking interviews with guests who represent a wide variety of political and cultural points of view.

FIRING LINE provides a platform where competing ideas are examined in a rigorous but respectful manner,” says Hoover. “It’s my goal to get viewers open to a fresh perspective on issues without getting lost in the trading of talking points.”

FIRING LINE‘s season-five premiere features former two-term New Jersey Governor and EPA Administrator Christine Todd Whitman, a rare pro-choice Republican. In Friday’s season premiere episode, she condemns the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, calling it an example of judicial activism, and warns that “women will die” as a result of the decision.

“Throughout season five, I’ll continue to tackle the big issues, including the economy and inflation, defense of democracy, gun reform, human rights, climate change and abortion,” Hoover says. “But also expect to hear from thoughtful voices in comedy, literature and the cultural zeitgeist.”

In fact, one of the program’s most-watched clips of season 4 comes from outside the purely political arena. In it, exiled Chinese artist Ai Weiwei tells Hoover that the US is already in an authoritarian state and compares politically correct ideological conformity to the Cultural Revolution in China. The exchange generated an explosive reaction online and in the media.

FIRING LINE enters its fifth year on PBS at a time of tremendous growth and expansion onto new platforms. As 2021 concluded, premiere broadcast ratings were up 9% over the previous year (Source: TV Nielsen National, Sept. – Nov. 2021 v. Sept. – Nov. 2020).

FIRING LINE has received more than 40M impressions on YouTube since the launch of full episodes in August 2020. It is also available streaming on the PBS Video App and PBS.org. The highly acclaimed Firing Line podcast launched a year ago and features extensive exclusive content.

“In this time of hyperpartisanship, the range of perspectives and reasoned discussion that FIRING LINE offers resonates with a new generation of viewers,” says Executive Producer Alyssa Litoff.  “Now, our enthusiastic audience engages directly in the conversation through our thriving social and streaming platforms in addition to our ever-popular linear program.”

Season 5 premieres Friday, July 1 at 8:30 pm (check local listings).

FIRING LINE WITH MARGARET HOOVER is executive produced by Tom Yellin, Margaret Hoover and Alyssa Litoff. The WNET Group is co-producer. Neal Shapiro and Stephen Segaller are executives in charge for The WNET Group.

Support for FIRING LINE WITH MARGARET HOOVER is provided by Stephens Inc., Robert Granieri, Charles R. Schwab, The Fairweather Foundation, Asness Family Foundation, The Rosalind P. Walter Foundation, Damon Button and The Marc Haas Foundation.

NEW ORLEANS, July 1, 2022 — Former Attorney General of Louisiana, Charles C. Foti, Jr., Esq., a partner at the law firm of Kahn Swick & Foti, LLC (“KSF”), announces that KSF has commenced an investigation into Interface, Inc. (NasdaqGS: TILE).

On September 28, 2020, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”) announced the results of its investigation into the Company’s historical EPS calculations and rounding practices, including findings of inappropriate earnings management by, or at the direction of, the Company’s two most senior accounting executives, as well as violations of the federal securities laws. The SEC Order also found that “Interface employees caused Interface to produce documents in response to commission investigative requests that were suggestive of contemporaneous support for journal entries that, in truth, did not exist at the time the entries were recorded,” and had continued to modify documents even after the SEC began its investigation, resulting in a $5 million fine being levied against the Company, among other measures.

The Company has been sued in a securities class action lawsuit for failing to disclose material information, violating federal securities laws. Recently, the court presiding over that case denied the Company’s motion to dismiss, allowing the case to move forward.

KSF’s investigation is focusing on whether Interface’s officers and/or directors breached their fiduciary duties to the Company’s shareholders or otherwise violated state or federal laws.

If you have information that would assist KSF in its investigation, or have been a long-term holder of Interface shares and would like to discuss your legal rights, you may, without obligation or cost to you, call toll-free at 1-877-515-1850 or email KSF Managing Partner Lewis Kahn (The Daily Caller News Foundation), or visit https://www.ksfcounsel.com/cases/nasdaqgs-tile/ to learn more.

Through this K-12 infusion model, Italian cultural content in all subjects in grades K-12 can be integrated into a school district’s existing, approved curriculum. Every lesson begins with an Italian theme then expands to incorporate the heritage of all students.

COPOMIAO is inviting state commissioners/superintendents, dozens of dioceses, and Vatican officials to introduce this model to as many U.S. schools as possible. The lesson plans have been carefully designed and thoroughly tested, and they’re available online at no cost.

“We are confident that The Universality of Italian Heritage will open the door to an educationally stimulating and rewarding experience for teachers and students throughout the country,” said Cav. Gilda Rorro Baldassari, Ed.D., who chairs the NJIHC Curriculum Development Committee. “Italy, through its art, philosophy, innovation and culture, heavily influenced and accelerated the development of the modern world, so it seems fitting that we use Italian heritage as a catalyst to create more enriching curricula for every student.”

In addition to its lessons, the curriculum has implemented its AMICIZIA (Friendship) program. This “Gemellaggio” (twining) program takes students on a journey seldom traveled in education. It provides personal contact experiences, an international bilingual experience, and a vehicle for “piloting” new lessons through zoom.

Formed in 1975 and based in NYC, The Conference of Presidents of Major Italian American Organizations (COPOMIAO) is comprised of 54 of the most influential cultural, educational, fraternal and anti-defamation groups in the nation.

Chaired by Robert DiBiase and housed in the New Jersey Department of Education since 2002, the New Jersey Italian Heritage Commission (NJIHC) was formed to strengthen the cultural identity of Italians and Italian Americans. “We accomplish this through public educational programs that preserve and promote an accurate, bias-free, and non-stereotyped understanding and awareness of historical and current contributions and accomplishments of the Italian heritage,” according to DiBiase.

WASHINGTON -The congressional panel investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol attack may make a criminal referral to the Justice Department recommending that anybody who tried to influence testimony be prosecuted, Representative Liz Cheney said in an interview broadcast on Thursday.

The witness-tampering issue emerged during the Jan. 6 select committee’s sixth hearing on Tuesday, when Cheney revealed that some witnesses reported receiving veiled threats from allies of former President Donald Trump to do “the right thing.”

“It gives us a real insight into how people around the former president are operating and to the extent to which they believe that they can affect the testimony of witnesses before the committee,” Cheney, a committee vice chair and one of two Republicans on the panel of nine, told ABC News.

“It’s something we take very seriously. And it’s something that people should be aware of. It’s a very serious issue, and I would imagine the Department Justice would be very interested in and we’ll take that very seriously as well,” she said.

The panel is investigating the events surrounding the Jan. 6 storming of the U.S. seat of government last year as lawmakers convened to certify Democrat Joe Biden’s victory over Trump, a Republican, in the November 2020 election.

Evidence gathered by the committee could be crucial in the Justice Department’s criminal investigation of the riot and any plan to subvert the outcome of the election.

Jan. 6 committee member Representative Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat, echoed Cheney’s concerns, noting that Trump has raised hundreds of millions of dollars.

“Some of that money is being used to pay for lawyers for witnesses, and it’s not clear that that arrangement is one that is without coercion potential for some of those witnesses,” Lofgren said in an interview with CNN on Wednesday night.

“So let’s just say this: It’s a concern, and anyone who is trying to dissuade or tamper with witnesses should be on notice that that’s a crime and we are perfectly prepared to provide any evidence we have to the proper authorities.”

WARSAW – Polish banks will be taxed more if they don’t offer clients higher interest on their deposits, the leader of Poland’s ruling party said on Saturday, intensifying government pressure on the sector to share the benefits of rising rates with savers.

Poland’s main interest rate is at its highest level since 2008, boosting banks’ profits but squeezing household budgets in a country where floating rate mortgages are the norm.

“I do not want to decide for the bankers, but it must be a solid percentage, not at the level of inflation, but enough for people to feel that this money will lose much less value when it is in the bank,” Jaroslaw Kaczynski said during a speech in the eastern city of Bialystok.

“If not, then we will have to tax these profits and that’s it.”

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has previously criticised banks for not offering savers enough interest, and said in May he would use “persuasion” to make them offer more.

(Reuters) – Elon Musk on Friday night broke his nine-day silence on Twitter, the social media platform he is trying to buy for $44 billion, posting a picture of him meeting Pope Francis on Thursday.

The world’s richest person tweeted a picture where he can be seen standing next to the pope, captioning it: “Honored to meet @pontifex yesterday.”

Musk’s four teenage boys are also pictured, but not his 18-year-old transgender daughter who, on June 20 sought to change her name and sever ties with him. Musk has a total of eight children.

The purpose and location of Musk’s meeting with the pope were not immediately clear.

Last month, Musk said there were “still a few unresolved matters” on the deal to buy Twitter, including the number of spam users on the system and the coming together of the debt portion of the deal.

The Atlantic City Police Department Reports:

On June 28, 2022, members of the Atlantic City Police Department’s Special Investigations Section conducted a surveillance operation in the 2600 block of Pacific Avenue in response to numerous complaints concerning illegal narcotics distribution and quality of life issues throughout the block.

At approximately 2:10 PM, detectives observed an illegal narcotics transaction between David Nesbitt and Gregory Kinash. Nesbitt was found to be in possession of 19.6 grams or approximately 80 wax folds of heroin, 1.9 grams of crack cocaine, 1 crushed white and blue pill, a black scale, and 50 grams of marijuana. Kinash was in possession of approximately 1 gram of crack cocaine. Both males were taken into custody without incident.

An ensuing investigation led detectives to a nearby motel located in the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue where it was determined Nesbitt had rented a room. Detectives subsequently obtained a court approved search warrant for the room and executed the warrant a short time later. Recovered inside the room was a loaded semi-automatic handgun fitted with a high capacity magazine, an additional 100 wax folds of Heroin, and 122 grams of marijuana all packaged for street sale. Approximately $2,510.00 in US currency was seized believed to be proceeds of illegal narcotics sales. The recovered handgun was also determined to be a “Ghost Gun”, a firearm that lacks a serial number, rendering the weapon difficult to trace. The investigation was led by Detective Eric Evans.
