STOCKHOLM -Scandinavian airline SAS and its pilots have agreed to extend their wage talks until Monday in the hope of averting a strike, a company executive told reporters on Saturday.

Close to 1,000 pilots in Denmark, Sweden and Norway plan to strike if talks break down, according to the unions, which SAS had said could leave some 30,000 passengers stranded each day.

“We need to sleep, none of us have slept for a really long time,” SAS’ lead negotiator Marianne Hernaes told reporters after the latest round of talks which ran through the night.

A strike would comes at a difficult time for loss-making SAS as it seeks to restructure its business by undertaking large cost cuts, raising new cash and converting debt to equity as part of a plan to rescue the carrier from collapse.

Swedish daily Expressen had earlier reported, citing unnamed sources, that a deal had been reached, but SAS said the talks were still ongoing in the hope of averting a strike.

NEW YORK, NY – The Bronx District Attorney’s Office has announced the arrest of a Bronx mother and her 17-year-old son for the death of her 7-year-old daughter. Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark described the heinous and grisly acts committed by the two against the young child.

Navasia Jones, 36, and her son Paul Fine Jr, now 18, have been indicted on murder, manslaughter and additional charges in the August 2021 death of her seven-year-old daughter, Julissia Batties.

District Attorney Clark said, “It is alleged that a woman and her teenage son caused the death of her innocent, defenseless seven-year-old daughter, Julissia, in their Bronx home. Further, there are allegations that the child was beaten and sexually abused and denied medical attention. This is a disturbing case of brutality and callousness. A 10-month investigation with the NYPD led to the indictments charging the defendants with Murder. The investigation indicates that there was a failure of care throughout Julissia’s brief life. The signs of her torment were there but not acted on. We send our condolences to Julissia’s father and grandmother, who remain devastated by the loss of this beautiful, little girl.”

According to the investigation, between August 8, 2021 and August 10, 2021, it is alleged that Julissia Batties, 7, was beaten and died while in the care of her mother and half-brother in their apartment in 175 Alexander Avenue.

According to the investigation, Jones called 911 at 8:06 a.m. on August 10, 2021, after being urged by a family member to call 911.

“When first responders arrived, Julissia had no pulse and no vital signs,” the district attorney’s office said. “The child was taken to Lincoln Hospital where she was pronounced dead. According to the investigation, Julissia had suffered injuries at about 5 a.m. on August 10, 2021.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the child died of homicide caused by blunt force trauma to her abdomen. Examiners concluded she was struck with enough force to cause her internal organs to tear and bleed, filling her abdomen with blood.

Examiners also found multiple bruises visible about the child’s entire face, chin, and back of right ear. There were additional injuries, visible bruises, marks, and scratches on Julissia’s body, including on both wrists, her clavicle, upper thigh and mouth.

According to the investigation, Fine Jr. allegedly sexually abused Julissia. The child had injuries that were consistent with sexual assault. The investigation indicates that those injuries were inflicted after Julissia had already begun to experience symptoms caused by the assaults to her abdomen.

‘Karine Was Not Set Up To Succeed’: DeSantis Spokeswoman Lambasts Biden’s Press Secretary

Harold Hutchison on July 1, 2022

A spokeswoman for Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida claimed that White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was “not set up to succeed.”

“I’m not going to defend her, she has blatantly lied about my boss from the White House briefing room,” Christina Pushaw posted on Twitter late Thursday night, “But, Karine was not set up to succeed. Biden gave her this job as his approval collapses and the country faces multiple crises.”

Jean-Pierre replaced Jen Psaki as White House press secretary in May, becoming the first black woman, immigrant and lesbian to serve in the role.

“She wasn’t set up to succeed because frankly she has a very difficult job cleaning up the messes Biden leaves in every public appearance, like his attack on SCOTUS at the NATO summit yesterday,” Pushaw told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Allies of Karine Jean-Pierre say Biden admin set her up for failure by having a white man standing by for help https://t.co/qb2pT96k5g

— TheBlaze (@theblaze) July 1, 2022

Pushaw also provided instances where Jean-Pierre lied about DeSantis.

“She just lied 2 weeks ago when she stated that Florida ‘reversed course’ on child Covid vaccination — our position has never changed and has always been clear and consistent,” Pushaw said, referring to comments DeSantis made in June.

Pushaw also pointed to statements Jean-Pierre made about Florida’s recently-passed parents rights bill being “targeted at LGBTQ kids,” telling The DCNF the legislation was about “age appropriate sex education regardless of orientation.”

The White House did not respond immediately to a request for comment from TheDCNF.

Iranians Caught Trying To Cross The Southern Border As Part Of Migrant Caravan

Jennie Taer on July 1, 2022

Four Iranians were apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border Thursday as part of a wave of 675 migrants encountered in a single day in just one sector.

The Iranians crossed among a group of 299 illegal migrants near Eagle Pass, Texas, U.S. Customs and Border Protection announced Friday. They are currently detained and will be transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Removal Operations (ICE ERO) “pending immigration proceedings,” CBP Del Rio sector spokesperson Dennis Smith told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Migrants from Iran are considered “Special Interest Aliens” (SIAs) because there are national security concerns with the country, a CBP source told TheDCNF speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the matter.

A total of 616,118 migrants from countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador have been encountered at the Southern border so far in fiscal year 2022 , according to CBP statistics.

In May, TheDCNF encountered migrants from Russia, Chechnya, Belarus, India, Nepal and China in the Yuma sector of the southern border in Arizona. During the encounter, one woman from Russia told TheDCNF that she flew a month before from Sochi, Russia, to Istanbul, Turkey, to Frankfurt, Germany and arrived in Tijuana, Mexico, before she took transport to cross into Arizona.

The large groups often tie up Border Patrol agents from border security duties, Del Rio sector Chief Patrol Agent Jason D. Owens said in a Friday statement.

“A large group is a group consisting of 100 subjects or more. Currently, the Del Rio Sector is responsible for over 50 percent of all large group apprehension in the nation. With less infrastructure and personnel than larger Border Patrol sectors, this puts a tremendous strain on our communities and keeps our agents from doing what they signed up to do – patrolling our border and keeping this country safe,” Owens said.

WOLF: Biden Could Get The Border Crisis Under Control With One Policy. Why Won’t He Use It?

Chad Wolf on July 1, 2022

In the midst of a surge in illegal aliens coming to the southern border, the American people demanded answers. I’m not referring to the current border crisis but the situation in 2018-2019 when I was chief of staff and then acting secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

In order to solve this problem, we knew that the same old failed policies were not going to stem the flow. We needed new and innovative solutions grounded in law.

The solution was the implementation of the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), or “Remain in Mexico” policy. Although it is disappointing that the Supreme Court ruled Thursday the Biden administration could terminate MPP, the majority upheld the legality of the policy and made no attempt to refute its success at securing the border.

We developed and implemented MPP because of the dire situation we found ourselves in from 2018-2019. Loopholes in the law and a disastrous court order that cartels and smugglers figured out could nullify DHS’s clear policy of enforcing our immigration laws was becoming commonplace. After years of the Obama administration’s lax border enforcement policies, including the large-scale practice of catch-and-release, the immigration courts were overwhelmed.

With Congress unwilling to close these loopholes, the Trump administration pored over the immigration laws to find a solution. The result was the creation of MPP.

Once DHS had MPP up and running, it became an overnight success in deterring illegal immigration. Nearly all of the illegal aliens apprehended at the border are economic migrants who do not qualify for asylum. But before MPP, just saying the words “credible fear” was a ticket into the United States to wait for an immigration court hearing that was years away.

The release is exactly what these illegal aliens wanted, allowing them to reunite with family members already in the country, most likely unlawfully, and to work.

MPP was a game changer because it prevented these economic migrants from obtaining their goal of being allowed into the United States pending the adjudication of their claim. While more than 70% of aliens apprehended at the border passed this lower credible-fear threshold, fewer than 15% actually met the statutory definition to be granted asylum.

Well aware that they would not get immigration relief and unable to have the opportunity to disappear into the interior of the United States, many of these illegal aliens simply chose to go back home rather than wait in Mexico. Critically, this deterrent factor sent a clear message to those thinking of taking the journey north that the effort would fail.

MPP is one of the most effective immigration enforcement tools ever developed.

While the Supreme Court ruled that the Biden administration could end MPP, an administration serious about securing the border would not terminate this program. MPP remains highly popular with Border Patrol agents and the American people.

If the Biden administration insists on ending MPP, it needs to quickly implement a policy that actually works, not one that speeds up the processing of illegal aliens to be released into the country.

American Fliers Prepare To Suffer ‘Airmaggedon’ This Fourth of July

Max Keating on July 1, 2022

A miserable travel experience could be in store for many this holiday weekend as over 3.5 million people plan to fly domestically at a time when air travel infrastructure is already stretched beyond its limit.

The Fourth of July weekend is poised to be the second busiest for travel since 2000, Axios reported. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and major airlines are working to prevent a repeat of what happened over Memorial Day weekend, where increased stress on understaffed air travel infrastructure resulted in the cancellation of 2,700 flights in a five-day span, according to CBS News.

Already this week Philadelphia International Airport has seen 180 delayed flights and 27 cancellations, while Richmond International Airport had 218 flights cancelled in June for a cancellation rate of 5%, reported Axios.

Airlines are predicting further “operational” challenges from the added stress, Axios reported. Many, like Delta, are issuing waivers for customers to change their flights on the busiest travel days of the weekend free of charge.

The FAA and the airline industry have each blamed the other for cancellations and delays that have increased throughout June, The Hill reported.

In a letter sent to Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg on June 24, president of trade group Airlines for America suggested that FAA understaffing at air traffic control towers have caused delays even in “blue sky conditions.” Industry leaders have specifically cited New York and Jacksonville as key bottlenecks, according to The Hill.

The FAA, consumer groups and the Biden administration have pointed out that as travel has rebounded after the pandemic, airlines themselves haven’t been able to expand operations to keep up with demand and are still understaffed in virtually all departments when compared to pre-pandemic levels, The Hill reported.

“People expect when they buy an airline ticket that they’ll get where they need to go safely, efficiently, reliably and affordably. After receiving $54 billion in pandemic relief to help save the airlines from mass layoffs and bankruptcy, the American people deserve to have their expectations met,” the FAA said in a statement shared with The Daily Caller News Foundation.

‘Burning America To The Ground’: Liberals Blast SCOTUS EPA Decision

Harold Hutchison on July 1, 2022

  • Liberals sharply criticized the Supreme Court’s decision in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency that restricted limits on emissions.
  • “The court is utterly fraudulent,” Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland said during an appearance on MSNBC.
  • Other liberals reiterated calls to end the filibuster and to “expand” the Supreme Court.

Liberals lambasted the Supreme Court after the justices ruled the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) exceeded its authority Thursday.

The high court issued a 6-3 decision in West Virginia v. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday that limits the power of government agencies. Chief Justice John Roberts wrote that the EPA exceeded its authority when it sought to impose caps on power plant emissions.

“The decades-long fight to protect citizens from corporate polluters is being wiped out by these MAGA extremist justices,” Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer posted on Twitter. “Every Republican who helped seat these justices is complicit.”

“The court is utterly fraudulent, and the only thing that could explain their decisions is right-wing Republican dogma,” Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland told MSNBC host Chris Hayes Thursday evening. (RELATED: ‘What Other Judicial Outrage Must We Endure?’: Dems Call For Expanding SCOTUS After String Of Losses)

WATCH:

“The SCOTUS—which has 0 climate scientists—just ruled 6-3 that the EPA, which Congress specifically created to protect the environment, does not have the authority to protect the environment,” Qasim Rashad, host of “The Qasim Rashad Show” on Sirius XM, posted on Twitter. “GOP is literally burning America to the ground & we can’t even abolish the filibuster.”

Former Secretary of Labor Robert B. Reich also slammed the court’s decision.

“The illegitimate Supreme Court just targeted a 38-year-old precedent that empowers federal agencies to protect you,” Reich posted. “They want you to drink dirty water, eat contaminated food, and breathe filthy air. Doesn’t sound ‘pro-life’ to me.”

Some of the most liberal members of the House of Representatives also lambasted the ruling.

“This extremist, radical Supreme Court isn’t just rolling back fundamental rights – they’re endangering our planet and our future,” Democratic Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington, chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, posted. “Enough is enough. End the filibuster and expand the Court.”

“Fascist SCOTUS guts the EPA’s ability to regulate carbon emissions, fight climate change,” Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, said. “The federal government will be restricted from regulating anything of significance in the absence of a clear Congressional directive to do so.”

Schumer, Raskin, Jayapal and Tlaib did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Biden Administration Looks To Halt Offshore Drilling In Atlantic, Pacific Amid Energy Crisis

Jack McEvoy on July 1, 2022

The Biden administration announced a five-year plan Friday that prevents new offshore oil drilling projects in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

The proposed plan will give the administration the ability to hold no new lease sales at all, according to the Interior Department. The plan could allow a maximum of 11 oil lease sales for offshore drilling, ten in the Gulf of Mexico and one in the Cook Inlet off of the south-central Alaska coast over the course of the next five years.

“A Proposed Program is not a decision to issue specific leases or to authorize any drilling or development,” said Department of the Interior (DOI) Secretary Deb Haaland.

“From Day One, President Biden and I have made clear our commitment to transition to a clean energy economy,” she continued.

The proposal comes amid rising gas prices and inflation and calls for increasing oil production as well as President Joe Biden’s commitment to tackling climate change. Biden also vowed to ban offshore fossil fuel drilling during his campaign.

Any new offshore leases are unlikely to have a short-term impact on fuel prices as it often takes years after a sale is completed for companies to begin drilling.

The announced plan is part of the federally required process to implement a new five-year plan for offshore oil drilling. The DOI last held an offshore oil and gas auction in November, located in the Gulf of Mexico; however, a court order later stopped the sale on the grounds that the administration had failed to properly account for its impact on the climate.

The DOI intends to open this matter to public comment and may reduce the areas they open up for new drilling based on the public’s reaction.

The White House did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. The DOI referred TheDCNF to its statement issued at the time of the decision.

Dem Governor Urges Biden To Use Military Bases For Abortions

Micaela Burrow on July 1, 2022

Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Friday urged the Biden administration to consider opening up military bases for abortions to women living in states that heavily restrict the procedure, ABC News reported.

Since military bases are considered federal lands, Hochul argued in a virtual meeting with President Joe Biden that federal law would allow them to override state bans, according to ABC. Her suggestion heeds widespread outcries from  Democratic politicians about loss of women’s rights following the Supreme Court’s decision on June 24 overturning Roe V. Wade.

“Veterans hospitals, military bases and other places where the federal government controls the jurisdiction in some of the states that are hostile to women’s rights” could “make sure that those services can be available to other women” not publicly employed, Hochul said, according to ABC.

Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico, also in the meeting, floated the idea of using Indian Health Service clinics and tribal territory, where state law does not govern, as alternatives to private abortion facilities, ABC reported.

Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren stated that the U.S. government should plant abortion facilities on the outskirts of national parks on ABC’s “This Week with George Stephanopoulos” Sunday and in a Washington Post interview Monday.

Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra said Tuesday that “every option is on the table” regarding abortion access, but the agency would “have a conversation with the president to make sure we implement his directives”

The White House, while agreeing with the Democratic leaders on the supposed need for comprehensive reproductive healthcare availability for all, said on Tuesday putting abortion centers on government-owned property could have “dangerous ramifications.”

Currently, however, federal facilities, including military bases, can only perform abortions in the case of rape, incest or where the life of the mother is in danger due to the Hyde Amendment, which prevents taxpayer dollars from funding elective abortions.

The House Appropriations Committee approved amendments to the fiscal year 2023 funding bill Thursday that would repeal the Hyde Amendment, allowing federal medical centers to perform abortions to the degree Congress decides, according to a press release.

“The bill eliminates the Hyde and Weldon amendments, a long-standing discriminatory policy that denied low-income women their legal right to an abortion,” the bill summary stated.

DELAWARE (PRESS RELEASE) – The Delaware State Police are providing a scam advisory surrounding the fraudulent use of cryptocurrency.

The Delaware State Police are warning the public of an increase in scams involving the use of cryptocurrency (or “crypto”) ATM machines and quick response (or “QR”) codes.  The Delaware State Police have recently seen an increase in scams where the victim is directed to local crypto ATMs and/or stores that authorize QR crypto payments.  Criminal perpetrators will leverage victims to send money in these forms during schemes that include government impersonation (DEA, ATF, Sheriff’s office, police agencies), computer spyware (computer takeovers, fraudulent security alerts), and romance scams (creating a false sense of intimacy).  Scammers may maintain lengthy contact with the victim through online or telephone communication methods.

Given the nature of cryptocurrency, the successful recovery of lost funds can be extremely challenging.  Unlike traditional wire or bank transfers, crypto transfers are instantaneous, and once the suspect receives the funds they are typically moved immediately to other accounts that are often based outside of the country.

Follow these tips to prevent yourself from falling victim to such scams:

  • Never send crypto payment to someone you have never met.
  • Remember that no legitimate business or agency will ever request a crypto payment.
  • Do not engage unknown callers who claim that you are in trouble or threaten you or a family member with arrest, exposure, or embarrassment if a crypto payment is not made immediately.
