These data are part of a New Drug Application that has been granted priority review by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration

PRINCETON, N.J., June 3, 2022 — Taiho Oncology, Inc. announced today updated results of the Phase 2 FOENIX-CCA2 trial of futibatinib, confirming results observed in an earlier analysis. The trial was conducted in patients with locally advanced or metastatic unresectable intrahepatic (inside the liver) cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) harboring FGFR2 gene rearrangements including fusions. These data were presented as an oral presentation at the 2022 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago.

“Updated data from the pivotal FOENIX-CCA2 Phase 2 trial reinforce the durable efficacy and continued tolerability of futibatinib in previously treated patients with locally advanced or metastatic iCCA harboring FGFR2 gene rearrangements including fusions,” said medical oncologist Lipika Goyal, MD, MPhil, of the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center in Boston, and lead investigator on the study. “These data add to the body of evidence supporting futibatinib as a potential treatment option for patients living with this rare cancer that traditionally has had limited treatment options.”

Each year, approximately 8,000 individuals in the U.S. are diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma (CCA),1 a cancer of the bile ducts of the liver. Worldwide, approximately 0.3-6 people per 100,000 individuals live with CCA.2 CCA is mainly seen in people 65 years of age or older,3 and treatment options are limited. FGFR2 gene rearrangements, including gene fusions, which can form a hybrid gene and promote tumor proliferation, are observed more frequently in the iCCA patient population, with approximately 10-16% of patients having tumors with these rearrangements.4,5,6,7,8

The Phase 2 FOENIX-CCA2 trial included 103 patients with locally advanced or metastatic unresectable iCCA harboring FGFR2 gene rearrangements including fusions who had received one or more prior lines of systemic therapy. Patients received futibatinib 20 mg once daily until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity. The primary endpoint of the trial was objective response rate (ORR) as assessed by independent central review.

At the time of the data cutoff for this updated analysis, with a median follow-up of 25.0 months, the ORR was 41.7%. Responses were durable, with a median duration of response (DoR) of 9.5 months (74% of responses lasted greater than six months). In addition, the disease control rate was 82.5%, median progression-free survival was 8.9 months and median overall survival was 20.0 months.

The most common treatment-related adverse events (TRAEs) were hyperphosphatemia (85%), alopecia (33%), dry mouth (30%), diarrhea (28%), dry skin (27%) and fatigue (25%). Most TRAEs were of mild or moderate intensity and manageable. There were two patients with grade 4 TRAEs and four patients discontinued treatment due to TRAEs. No treatment-related deaths occurred.

“Taiho Oncology remains committed to addressing unmet treatment needs in patients living with a broad range of cancers, and these data from the FOENIX-CCA2 trial demonstrate the clinical activity of futibatinib,” said Volker Wacheck, Vice President, Clinical Development, Taiho Oncology, Inc. “We are looking forward to continued discussions with regulatory authorities around this important investigational therapy.”

In March 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) accepted for priority review the New Drug Application (NDA) for futibatinib in the treatment of patients with previously treated locally advanced or metastatic CCA harboring FGFR2 gene rearrangements, including gene fusions. The FDA provided an anticipated Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA) action date of September 30, 2022. The FDA previously granted Breakthrough Therapy Designation (BTD) for futibatinib in CCA in February 2021.

About Futibatinib
Futibatinib (TAS-120) is an investigational, oral, potent, selective and irreversible tyrosine kinase inhibitor of FGFR1, 2, 3 and 4. This irreversible binding to the ATP binding pocket of FGFR1-4 results in the inhibition of FGFR-mediated signal transduction pathways, reduced tumor cell proliferation and increased cell death in tumors with FGFR1-4 genetic aberrations. Futibatinib is being studied alone as a potential treatment for patients with advanced solid tumors with FGFR1-4 genomic aberrations, including cholangiocarcinoma, or in combination with chemotherapy or other therapies.

KINSHASA – More than $400 million in tax advances and loans that Democratic Republic of Congo’s state mining company Gecamines said it paid to the national treasury cannot be found, according to a report by the government’s public finances watchdog.

State miner Gecamines holds minority stakes in several of the world’s largest copper and cobalt projects, including Glencore’s Kamoto Copper Company mine and China Molybdenum’s Tenke Fungurume mine.

Gecamines has long been dogged by accusations of corruption made by non-governmental organisations and opposition politicians.

Gecamines has always denied all allegations of wrongdoing. Its secretary-general did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Saturday about the latest accusations.

Gecamines presented accounts to auditors from the General Inspectorate of Finances (IGF) showing tax advances and loans to the Congolese state of more than $591 million, but only $178 million could be traced to the treasury’s accounts, according to an IGF audit report seen by Reuters.

The report, which is dated May 31 but has not been publicly released, said the missing $413 million were presumed to have been misappropriated and that auditors would continue their investigations.

It did not specify when the advances and loans in question were made.

The report said another $175 million paid to Gecamines as a signing bonus for a copper and cobalt project could not be traced to the treasury either, and faulted the company for failing to independently evaluate the levels of mineral reserves at its joint ventures with foreign investors.

Gecamines produced close to 500,000 tonnes of copper a year during its heyday in the 1980s, but it has since fallen heavily into debt and sold off its majority stakes in major mines.

Congo is Africa’s top producer of copper and the world’s leading miner of cobalt, which is used in electric car batteries.

Since coming to office in 2019, President Felix Tshisekedi has overhauled Gecamines’ leadership, replacing the executives most closely connected to previous corruption allegations.

NEWARK, NJ – Porch pirates typically raid your front porch in an attempt to loot your Amazon booty, but a porch pirate in Newark did something completely unexpected. He was seen walking up to a home on 15th Street and after taking the package, he didn’t run off with it. Instead, he threw it into a nearby trash can.

Now, Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara requests the public’s help with identifying the suspect, who was captured on surveillance video stealing a package from the porch of a home on May 25, 2022.

“Police responded to a call about a theft that occurred around 1:04 p.m. in the 500 block of 15th Street. On the surveillance video, the suspect removed a package from the porch and placed it in the victim’s garbage can. Moments later, the suspect returned and retrieved the package from the trash can and walked away heading north on South 15th Street,” O’Hara Said.

The suspect is described as a dark skin male wearing a green sweatshirt with a hood, green track pants, and white sneakers.

GAZA -Israel briefly detained four Palestinian fishermen off the Mediterranean coast of Gaza on Saturday, Palestinian and Israeli sources said.

The Israeli military said it apprehended four suspects after two Palestinian vessels strayed from the designated fishing zone in the northern Gaza Strip, “violating security restrictions”. The navy fired at the boats when they failed to respond to instructions to halt, it added.

The secretary of the Gaza fishermen’s syndicate, Nizar Ayyash, told Reuters there were at least three Israeli attacks on Gaza fishermen on Saturday — all within the permitted fishing area.

In one of the incidents, he said, Israeli forces fired rubber bullets at a boat, wounding two of the four people aboard who were later hospitalised. In another, they seized a small boat after detaining the two fishermen on board, he added.

“We have recorded several violations against fishermen within the permitted fishing zone in the past weeks,” said Ayyash.

Fishing is one of the biggest industries in the coastal enclave, home to some 2.3 million Palestinians.

Citing security concerns, Israel maintains a land, air and sea blockade of Gaza, which is governed by the Islamist militant group Hamas. Boats are not allowed to stray beyond a fixed limit to the north towards Israel and Egypt keeps similar limitations to the southwest.

‘Joe Biden’s America’: Jim Jordan Tears Into Biden’s ‘Radical’ Gun Control Agenda

Harold Hutchison on June 3, 2022

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio slammed President Joe Biden’s push for gun control during an appearance on Fox Business Network Friday.

“This is — this is today’s radical left. You know, they’re — bend the knee, wear the mask, give us your gun, and oh, by the way, you’re going to pay $5 a gallon for gas,” Jordan said on “Varney and Company.”

“That is Joe Biden’s America, and I don’t think the American people are going to stand for it,” he added.

WATCH:

Biden proposed a number of gun control measures, including bans on so-called “assault weapons” and “large-capacity magazines,” expanded background checks, the repeal of a law that prohibits certain liability suits against firearms manufacturers and “red flag laws” in a Thursday evening speech.

Biden’s remarks came in the wake of a mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, that killed 19 children and two teachers and drew praise from gun control advocates across liberal networks.

“Understand what Democrats want to do,” Jordan said. “They want to tell you when you can get a gun, what kind of gun you can get, and where and how you have to store it in your own darn home. That is a direct attack on the Second Amendment.”

Jordan and the White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

WaPo Reporter Retweets Joke About Women. All Hell Breaks Loose

Laurel Duggan on June 3, 2022

Washington Post reporter David Weigel retweeted a joke about women, sparking instant backlash Friday afternoon from his fellow journalists and condemnation from his own outlet.

Soon after Weigel retweeted the joke, which suggested that all women were either bisexual or bipolar, other reporters began piling on, accusing him of sexism and of getting lenient treatment due to being white.

“Every girl is bi. You just have to figure out if it’s polar or sexual,” read the tweet in question, which Weigel later admitted to retweeting.

Felicia Sonmez, another Washington Post journalist, shared a screenshot of the tweet along with a comment that appeared to be a sarcastic criticism of The Washington Post.

“Fantastic to work at a news outlet where retweets like this are allowed!” she wrote.

The retweet also triggered a response from The Washington Post’s chief spokeswoman, Kristine Coratti Kelly, according to CNN.

“Editors have made clear to the staff that the tweet was reprehensible and demeaning language or actions like that will not be tolerated,” she said.

Other journalists jumped into the fray to attack Weigel for the joke as well.

“Will Dave receive an email from *his* boss that reads ‘Please stop. You’re hurting the institution by doing this,’ like Felicia Sonmez did when she tweeted about credible rape allegations against a beloved athlete?” New York Times reporter Stacey Burns wrote.

Weigel quickly apologized and removed the retweet, acknowleding the joke was “offensive.”

“I just removed a retweet of an offensive joke. I apologize and did not mean to cause any harm,” he said.

However, his words appeared to fall on deaf ears.

“You are still misogynistic trash. Can’t believe @washingtonpost still employs someone with such deep-seated sexist beliefs. Definitely clouds his ability to report unbiased facts,” writer and podcaster Amy Siskind wrote.

“Retweeted by a majority-represented political correspondent of the Washington Post. I’ve seen similar in the UK. A minority journalist, monitored ferociously by certain colleagues, would not get away with it,” BBC reporter Megha Mohan wrote.

Weigel and The Washington Post did not respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s requests for additional comment.

The Department of Transportation (DOT) is being sued by a federal watchdog after Pete Buttigieg, its secretary, took paternity leave in 2021 without a White House announcement amid an escalating supply chain crisis.

Protect the Public’s Trust, a group probing ethics issues in the government, announced a transparency lawsuit Thursday seeking to obtain information concerning who was in charge of the DOT when Buttigieg took time off. The Transportation Secretary left in mid-August 2021 for a little over a month, Politico reported.

“Plaintiff deeply respects Secretary Buttigieg’s commitment to his family and understands his desire to spend time with his new children,” the lawsuit stated. “However, he is still the Presidentially appointed, Senate confirmed head of a cabinet-level agency that has wide ranging responsibilities and an annual budget of over $80 billion.”

“Accordingly, the American people deserve to know if someone else was acting as the primary decision maker for any period of time or if the Department was operating at a reduced capacity while the Secretary was on leave,” it also stated.

The DOT declined a request for comment, pointing The Daily Caller News Foundation to Buttigieg’s remarks on CNN in October 2021 on the situation. Buttigieg said he was “proud” of taking paternity leave and “thankful for the phenomenal work” of his colleagues.

Buttigieg’s paternity leave came shortly after economists Susan Helper and Evan Soltas wrote a blog post for the White House discussing how businesses with “complex supply chains” are nearly “running out of stock.” Prior to this, Ford’s Chief Financial Officer John Lawler announced that more than 60,000 vehicles were unfinished due to the semiconductor chip shortage.

The lawsuit comes after the watchdog group filed a Freedom of Information Act request in December 2021. Protect the Public’s Trust asked for records relating to “the delegation of authority” from Buttigieg to other officials and how decisions were made without the secretary’s input, according to the lawsuit.

The DOT acknowledged receipt of the records request the day it was filed, the lawsuit says, and in February denied a request for expedited processing. While the DOT said it would “respond within the next 5 to 7 weeks,” the watchdog says it “has received no further updates from the Department.”

“As a parent myself I recognize that raising children is the most important job in the world,” said Michael Chamberlain, director of Protect the Public’s Trust, in a statement. “However, regardless of any individual’s circumstances, it is incumbent upon the leadership of an agency with an $80 billion budget and tens of thousands of employees, to ensure that the work on behalf of the American public continues to be performed and that the decisions affecting their daily lives continue to be made.”

The White House did not respond to The DCNF’s request for comment.

China Is About To Exploit Serious Weaknesses In US Military Might, Analyst Warns

Philip Lenczycki on June 3, 2022

  • China has developed new weapons after being humiliated during previous encounters with the U.S. military, Brandon Weichert, a geopolitical analyst, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
  • “In ’96 the Chinese watched what happened, they were thoroughly humiliated, and Beijing said never again,” Weichert told TheDCNF.
  • China’s new carrier killer missiles, hypersonic missiles and aircraft carriers threaten U.S. interests around the world, Weichert said.

China intends to deploy new missile systems and a third aircraft carrier to exploit U.S. military weaknesses, a geopolitical analyst told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

China may be able to successfully invade Taiwan because American forces are overextended and the U.S. Navy has become over-reliant on aircraft carriers, Brandon Weichert, a consultant for the U.S. Air Force, told TheDCNF. Furthermore, Washington even appears unable to stop Beijing from launching hypersonic missiles or building military bases outside the Indo-Pacific.

“The American Navy I would argue is at its weakest or its smallest probably since the interwar years in terms of what it can do in terms of if it’s pushed into multiple areas of conflict,” Weichert said. “Our Navy now is having to triage and pick what it is going to focus on at the expense of other important regions.”

Weichert, the author of “Winning Space: How America Remains A Superpower,” cited the U.S. halting sales of Howitzers to Taiwan in favor of arming Ukraine in May as evidence Washington is already unable to meet global security demands.

“The Pentagon is finding that these critical systems are being drained faster than they can be replaced by our ailing manufacturing base,” Weichert said. “We’re going to have to start figuring out very soon where we’re going to cut in order to refocus on China.”

Weichert said Washington may also be unable to protect Taiwan because the U.S. Navy became over-reliant on aircraft carriers in the aftermath of the 1996 Third Taiwan Strait Crisis.

“[U.S. military] strategic doctrine is what it was when Bill Clinton was president during the Taiwan Strait Crisis: if push comes to shove, we’re just going to deploy an aircraft carrier to run the Taiwan Strait,” Weichert said. “In ’96, China couldn’t do anything about it, but in ’96 the Chinese watched what happened, they were thoroughly humiliated, and Beijing said never again.”

The Third Taiwan Strait Crisis began after Taiwan’s former president, Lee Teng-hui, delivered a speech at Cornell University in June 1995. In response, the People’s Liberation Army launched missiles into the waters around Taiwan, and it wasn’t until the Clinton administration sailed the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait in March 1996 that Beijing finally relented.

Since then, China has allegedly developed “a robust suite of anti-access area denial” systems designed to keep U.S. aircraft carriers at bay, Weichert said. One of these weapon systems is China’s “carrier killer” anti-ship ballistic missile.

“I believe the Dongfeng-21D carrier killer missile is real,” said Weichert. “The Navy is extremely concerned about [carrier killer missiles] because there’s no countermeasure.” The Dongfeng-21D can reportedly strike targets approximately 900 miles away, according to the Center For Strategic & International Studies.

Weichert said that as Washington struggles to counter Beijing in the Indo-Pacific, China is rapidly projecting its power across the world.

One way that China is doing this is through hypersonic missile technology, which the U.S. lacks, Weichert said. In July and August 2021, China reportedly tested hypersonic missiles which can allegedly evade missile defense systems and strike targets 3,400 miles away.

“China has a significant lead on us, not only in the research side of hypersonics, but in the development side,” Weichert said. “China has these systems in the real world, we do not.”

China’s long-anticipated third aircraft carrier will also give Beijing the means to control new regions, Weichert said.

“The fact that China is going to have three operational carriers, that gives them a lot of advantages to threaten Taiwan in particular, but also to project power beyond,” Weichert said. “The ultimate goal for China is to be able to have access not only to the Indian Ocean and the overall Pacific Ocean, but to also have access to the Atlantic Ocean so they can project power into the Western Hemisphere.”

Although China failed to reach a security deal with Pacific island nations on Monday, Weichert said China won’t give up.

“The Chinese have the money, the time and the will. They’re going to keep trying to woo the leaders of these smaller countries until, finally, they get what they want,” said Weichert. “We should be focused like a laser on [China]. If we wait to respond until the threat has already come, then it will probably be too late.”

The Department of Defense did not respond immediately to TheDCNF’s request for comment.

‘Your *ss Will Be Looking For A Job’: Police Group Promises Reckoning For Soft-On-Crime Politicians

Harold Hutchison on June 3, 2022

A vice president of the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) promised politicians who didn’t back policies to keep streets safe “will be looking for a job” on Fox News Friday.

“The American people are very clear what we want,” FOP National Vice President Joe Gamaldi said on “America Reports,” adding, “We want safe streets, we want our neighborhoods to be secure, we want our businesses to thrive, and there’s gonna be a reckoning.”

WATCH:

“I don’t care whether you are a Republican or Democrat and you are ignoring the crime problem and not wanting law and order on the street, you better get your resume ready, your ass will be looking for a job in November,” Gamaldi vowed.

Gamaldi criticized “politicians, academics and activists pushing woke no consequence criminal justice policies” who he said were telling Americans that it would make communities safer. He added that black Americans were “disproportionately affected” by violent crime.

Police officers have also faced increased attacks, with 141 being shot through the end of May, according to a report issued by the FOP Thursday. Of the 141 officers shot, 21 were killed, the report said.

The FOP did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Teachers Explain How They Push ‘Gender Lessons’ On Young Children

Laurel Duggan on June 3, 2022

Teachers across the country revealed the strategies they use to teach young children about gender ideology in a Friday article published by The Washington Post.

Teachers discussed the various ways they are injecting gender-related discussions into their lessons, including comments about using hormones to stop menstrual periods and declining to state that sexual anatomy is gender-specific, according to The Washington Post. One transgender teacher makes a point of telling students about the process of gender transitions, including with personal testimony.

“LGBTQ identities are a naturally occurring facet of human variation, and that is why we need to learn about them in the context of biology and human anatomy,” Sam Long, a biology teacher at Denver South High School, told The Washington Post. Long, who is transgender, frequently discusses gender ideology with students, teaches that gender is a spectrum rather than a binary, and shares his own sex change experience.

Bill Farmer, a science teacher in Evanston, Illinois, teaches students that gender is a social construct, not a biological reality, he told The Washington Post. There are currently more transgender and nonbinary students in his classes than ever before – at least one or two per class – and approximately half of his school’s biology teachers cover these subjects.

“There’s not many spaces where students have the opportunity to engage in these discussions in a more structured way and where there’s a safe space to ask questions,” he told The Washington Post. “Most students are testing out or trying to figure out where they fall in their gender identity.”

One Massachusetts kindergarten teacher gives children lessons on pronouns, including gender-neutral pronouns “they” and “ze,” and introduces them to concepts including trans identities and “gender queer,” he told The Washington Post. He doesn’t fully define the terms because it would be “too much” for kindergarteners.

“We don’t say a penis belongs to a man,” he told The Washington Post. He instead teaches that a penis belongs to a human, and that doctors sometimes get it wrong when determining a newborn baby’s gender.

Kara Haug, a sex-ed teacher in the Sacramento area, claimed she didn’t bring up gender identity in her classes but would simply answer students’ questions when they arose, she told The Washington Post. When one student asked her if she could stop her period if she felt like a boy, for example, she explained how hormones work.

Several states require that school curricula include LGBT topics, and multiple curriculum plans addressing transgender and gender ideology have come into use in schools, according to The Washington Post.

One of these lessons, titled “Pink, Blue and Purple,” instructs teachers to ask first-graders how they know what gender they are and then explain that gender identity is a feeling and is not based on one’s body parts. It was developed by Advocates for Youth, a youth-oriented sexual health group.

Haug, Farmer, Long and Advocates for Youth did not immediately respond to The Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Joni Ernst Demands Answers From Fauci About NIH Spending Millions On ‘Potentially Deadly’ Puppy Experiments

Gabe Kaminsky on June 3, 2022

  • Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst is demanding Anthony Fauci’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) provide information on its experiments on puppies.
  • In May, the watchdog group White Coat Waste Project obtained a nearly $2 million NIAID contract for testing on puppies and other animals that involves force feeding them experimental allergy drugs.
  • “The last time taxpayers and lawmakers of both parties found out about Dr. Fauci’s horrific experiments on dogs, they were rightfully outraged. Before we hand him another nearly $2 million, we need answers to basic questions about this exorbitant contract,” Ernst told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

Republican Iowa Sen. Joni Ernst is requesting information from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) after it awarded a nearly two million contract on the taxpayers’ dime to perform “invasive, painful, and potentially deadly” experiments on puppies as young as six months old.

Ernst sent a letter Thursday to Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), requesting information on the experiments. The project involves force feeding puppies, mice, rats and dogs with experimental allergy drugs, according to the $1,836,453 contract obtained by the watchdog group White Coat Waste Project in May.

“This taxpayer-funded dog testing commissioned by NIAID appears to be unnecessary,” said Ernst in her letter. “According to the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) documents, NIAID’s contractor proposed an alternative, non-dog animal model to replace dogs for at least some testing. Additionally, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that, ‘The FDA does not mandate that human drugs be studied in dogs.’”

Ernst asked the NIAID to provide the experiment’s test name and description, number of dogs to be used, cost to taxpayers and the pain level as designated by the Department of Agriculture. The senator is also probing whether any funding will be provided from “private sources,” if funding will be provided to labs in China, the cost to taxpayers if a non-animal testing model was used and if the NIAID consulted Food and Drug Administration on whether dog testing was the only alternative.

“[W]e applaud Sen. Ernst for holding Dr. Fauci and his NIAID white coats accountable for #BeagleGate and demanding answers about his troubling plans to waste even more taxpayer dollars to abuse puppies in five cruel and unnecessary tests to evaluate a new drug to treat a runny nose,” Justin Goodman, senior vice president of White Coat Waste Project, said in a statement to The Daily Caller News Foundation.

As of March, it appears testing has not yet begun, Goodman told The DCNF. Goodman’s group submitted a subsequent FOIA request in May to determine the experiment’s status, he said.

The NIH did not immediately respond to TheDCNF’s request for comment.

Ernst’s probe comes as both Republican and Democratic lawmakers have sought to ban the NIAID from animal testing. Dogs were infected with heartworm larvae last year and then killed, The Daily Caller first reported, and also injected with cocaine.

“The last time taxpayers and lawmakers of both parties found out about Dr. Fauci’s horrific experiments on dogs, they were rightfully outraged,” Ernst told TheDCNF. “Cutting dogs’ vocal cords out, infesting the dogs with ticks, and placing dogs in cages with infectious sandflies were just some of those disgusting, federally-funded experiments.”

“Before we hand him another nearly $2 million, we need answers to basic questions about this exorbitant contract,” the senator added.

The documents obtained by White Coat Waste Project were partially redacted and the Iowa Republican wants the NIAID to openly disclose all facets of the experiment and acknowledge how much it will cost taxpayers in total.

ORTIZ: Biden’s Economy Isn’t In Good Shape, And The White House Won’t Admit It

Alfredo Ortiz on June 3, 2022

Today’s jobs report indicates the labor market is catching up with broader economic turmoil. The Labor Department announced 390,000 jobs were created in May, the fewest in over a year.

The labor force participation rate remained at a depressed level of 62.3%, lower than earlier this year and well below the 63.4% rate before the pandemic. Nominal wage growth fell, and real wages continued to decline, with inflation growing about 50% faster than pay.

Today’s numbers come on the heels of yesterday’s ADP private payrolls report showing that U.S. companies created the fewest jobs last month since the pandemic began, while small businesses actually shed 91,000 jobs.

President Joe Biden responded to today’s report by repeating his shopworn and misleading claim that his administration has presided over historic job creation. In reality, it hasn’t created any jobs but merely backfilled some of those lost during the pandemic. There are still nearly one million fewer people working in the country today than in February 2020.

The labor market lags broader economic trends and will likely mirror them in the months ahead. Consider the stagflation that consumers and small businesses are already experiencing. The economy is contracting, the stock market is in bear market territory and inflation is out of control, reducing living standards.

Inflation disproportionately hurts small businesses, which don’t have the purchasing power or preferential contracts as their big business competitors.

Job Creators Network Foundation’s latest SBIQ national poll of small business owners shows that their economic confidence has plunged to its lowest level on record.

“Food prices are slamming local restaurants,” reports the Wall Street Journal this week. “At GrandDaddy’s Hot Chicken, located in [Nashville], a single tender—seasoned, fried and coated with a cayenne pepper blend—costs $3. A year ago, it was $1.85.” It’s clear to any consumer or entrepreneur that inflation is far higher than the topline rate suggests.

Small business owners can’t simply pass these costs along to their customers, who are price sensitive. “Technically, I should have raised stuff a long time ago, but I can’t, because people are not going to want to buy,” says the restaurant owner, summing up the predicament facing small businesses nationwide.

Small business owners are also getting squeezed on the labor side, having to offer higher pay to attract workers.

Record-high gas prices approaching $5 a gallon are pinching pocketbooks and wreaking havoc throughout the economy. The Biden administration is responsible for this pain at the pump due to its ongoing war on traditional energy. One small business owner in Georgia forwarded me an email from a prospective job candidate who declined the role due to the increased cost of her commute.

This week, Gallup announced its consumer confidence index is at its lowest point since the Great Recession. Consumers have blown through their savings accrued during the pandemic and are taking on more debt just as it’s getting more expensive with the Federal Reserve raising interest rates. Given our consumer-driven economy, these headwinds will likely continue the ongoing economic contraction.

Then there’s the supply chain crisis, headlined by the 74% shortage in baby formula. Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have been AWOL on this issue that’s putting enormous stress on families across the country. Buttigieg needs formula to feed his babies, but he said he’s secured access to it. Meanwhile, mothers around the country are now relying on goat’s milk imported from Australia. This is third-world stuff.

The Biden administration’s response to this economic turmoil has been lackluster and counterproductive. What’s urgently needed is an Operation Warp Speed for the economy, with all hands on deck to address these significant economic challenges.

Congressional Republicans should pick up this mantle to bolster their chances of retaking the House of Representatives and the Senate in November.

In practice, such a Manhattan Project commitment means pledging to do everything possible to increase oil and gas production and return the country to energy independence achieved under former President Donald Trump. It means ending reckless deficit spending that fuels the inflationary fire.

It means making the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act permanent to give small business owners peace of mind that they won’t face another cost shock in a couple of years. And it means incorporating the best practices of governors across the country who are closer to the concerns of ordinary people. Suspending the gas tax as Gov. Glenn Youngkin has proposed in Virginia is just one example.

Real action rather than more rhetoric is the only way to return the nation to the shared economic prosperity it enjoyed between 2017 and 2019. It’s the only way to prevent job loss stagflation, and potentially a recession in the months ahead.
