Police dog subdues suspect armed with shotgun

by Shore News Network August 5, 2021
By Shore News Network

PUTNAM COUNTY, FL – Late Friday evening deputies were called to a home of a distressed man who was holding a firearm and making threats to self-harm. When deputies arrived the man had fled the home. Concerned for the man’s safety and others, K9 Jaeger arrived on the scene to track.

Using scent articles, Jaeger successfully found the man who was hiding about 50 yards from the residence. After Deputy Sharp announced his presence, the man extended his arms from the bushes and patrol deputies from the West district were able to secure him.

While K9 Jaeger is often used as a means to apprehend a suspect, he and our other K9s are trained to assist in tracking individuals. Due to this person threatening self-harm and the possibility that he was armed and could hurt himself or others, K9 Jaeger was used with a short leash for tracking using a scent article that allowed him to distinguish the person deputies were searching for in an area heavily traveled and with many other scents.

Our deputies train weekly with our K9s to continue to serve the community in the best practices available under the guidance of Sgt. Emmett Merritt. Their training along with the experience our road deputies have in working with our K9 units demonstrate the teamwork needed to quickly resolve situations like this one.

Mother, woman charged in ongoing Salas child abuse case

by Ryan Dickinson August 5, 2021
By Ryan Dickinson

LAS CRUCES, NM – Investigators filed additional charges against 37-year-old Dominic Frederick Salas, the man suspected of intentionally causing harm to his girlfriend’s young children, and police have arrested two women – including the children’s mother – as part of this case.

Dominic Frederick Salas, 37, now faces four felony counts of intentional child abuse. Salas was charged with two of the counts in mid-July and was arrested July 22. Salas was arrested once again, on July 30, on the two additional charges.
Also arrested July 30 was 33-year-old Cassidy B. Baker who is suspected of allowing Salas to live in her home since his release from jail. Baker is charged with one felony count of harboring and aiding a felon. While searching for Salas on the two additional charges, police made contact with Baker and let her know she could be charged if she knowingly helped Salas elude capture. On July 30, police located Baker and Salas traveling together in Baker’s vehicle.

Rose M. Lopez-Callahan, 36, the mother of three children Salas is accused of intentionally harming, was arrested on July 29. Lopez-Callahan is charged with four counts of intentional child abuse and two counts of failure to report child abuse. Investigators learned that Lopez-Callahan knew her children were being abused by Salas but did not report the incidents to authorities and, instead, remained in the relationship. Lopez-Callahan has four children 13 years old or younger. Investigators determined that Salas abused three children ages 13, 11 and 2.

Las Cruces police were assigned to investigate Salas after a referral was made through the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department. An 11-year-old boy, the son of Lopez-Callahan, told police he was excessively disciplined by Salas who also threatened to kill him.

Investigators conducted safe house interviews with the children who reside in the home. Investigators learned that, in one incident, Salas is accused of grabbing the 11-year-old boy’s neck and lifting him off the floor. In another instance, Salas is accused of holding the boy on the floor and pouring water over his mouth and nose which restricted the boy’s breathing.

Detectives are continuing their investigation. Salas, Lopez-Callahan and Baker are each initially being held without bond at the Dona Ana County Detention Center.

Jacquelyn M. Kasulis, Acting United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, Ray Donovan, Special Agent-in-Charge, Drug Enforcement Administration, New York Division (DEA), and Peter C. Fitzhugh, Special Agent-in-Charge, Homeland Security Investigations, New York (HSI), Dermot F. Shea, Commissioner, New York City Police Department (NYPD), and Kevin P. Bruen, Acting Superintendent, New York State Police (NYSP), announced the sentence.

“It is fitting that the defendant, who trafficked in massive amounts of cocaine to be sold at high prices in the United States, will now pay for his crimes by forfeiting his freedom for more than 17 years and forfeiting $10 million in criminal proceeds,” stated Acting United States Attorney Kasulis.  “This Office and its law enforcement partners will continue to work tirelessly to bring national and international narcotraffickers to justice.”

Ms. Kasulis expressed her grateful appreciation to HSI Panama, the HSI Panama Transnational Criminal Investigative Unit (TCIU), the Panamanian National Police, DEA Bogota Country Office Group 2 (BCO2) and the Colombian National Police (CNP) Direccion de Investigacion Criminal e Interpol (DIJIN) Sensitive Investigative Unit (SIU) for their assistance.

“The real Narcos of the world are receiving justice, as evidenced by today’s sentencing,” stated DEA Special Agent-in-Charge Donovan.  “Time and again, this DEA investigation has led to the arrest, extradition, and sentencing of an international drug kingpin responsible for flooding the streets of U.S. cities with multi-ton quantities of dangerous drugs. I applaud the members of the New York Drug Enforcement Task Force, HSI, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office Eastern District of New York for their diligent work throughout this investigation.”

“Today’s sentencing sends a resounding message that HSI Special Agents are committed to working with our law enforcement partners to aggressively uncover, dismantle and disrupt transnational organizations who conspire to distribute cocaine,” stated HSI Special Agent-in-Charge Fitzhugh. “Ordonez Martinez’s sentencing and $10 million forfeiture reinforces local and federal law enforcement commitment to bring to justice those individuals and organizations who seek to profit from selling dangerous controlled substances that tear at the very fabric of our community.”

According to court filings and proceedings, from 2009 through 2014, Ordonez participated in a massive international drug trafficking conspiracy responsible for trafficking tens of thousands of kilograms of cocaine from laboratories in the Colombian jungle to intermediary locations in Central America and Mexico by sea, before the cocaine was transported to the United States.  Ordonez supplied the conspiracy with the cocaine it trafficked and also owned a portion of the multi-ton shipments of cocaine that the organization dispatched from Colombia to intermediary locations, including Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico, before being sent to the United States where it was sold.  He further increased his share of the profits by receiving payment per kilogram at the substantially higher prices yielded from selling the cocaine further north and closer to the United States. Ordonez received a conservatively estimated $10,000,000 for his involvement in the conspiracy.  Ordonez was arrested in Panama in June 2018 and extradited to the United States on July 12, 2018.

This case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) investigation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the highest-level drug traffickers, money launderers, gangs, and transnational criminal organizations that threaten the United States by using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach that leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against criminal networks.

The government’s case is being handled by the Office’s International Narcotics and Money Laundering Section.  Assistant United States Attorney Nomi D. Berenson is in charge of the prosecution.

Two North Louisiana Men Headed to Federal Prison

by Press Release August 5, 2021
By Press Release

MONROE, La. – Acting United States Attorney Alexander C. Van Hook announced that two North Louisiana men each have been sentenced to 10 years in prison by United States District Judge Terry A. Doughty for offenses involving drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.

Derrick King Brooks, 45, of Monroe, Louisiana, was sentenced to spend 120 months (10 years) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and possession of a firearm during a drug trafficking offense. In February 2020, officers with the Monroe Police Department received a crime stoppers tip that Brooks was supplying cocaine in the Monroe area. Law enforcement agents with the Metro Narcotics Unit began investigating and surveilling the residence where Brooks was staying on Medra Street in Monroe. Through their investigation, agents seized baggies from Brooks’ residence containing chunks of cocaine residue which were sent to the lab for testing and was determined to be cocaine. A search warrant was obtained for the residence and arrest warrant for Brooks. Agents arrested Brooks as he was leaving from the residence and a search of the residence was conducted. In his vehicle, agents found baggies with cocaine, cash and two cell phones. A search of the residence resulted in more bags containing cocaine, other narcotics, a loaded semi-automatic pistol, cash and drug paraphernalia. In total, agents seized over $11,000 in cash, over 2,159 grams of powder cocaine, 29 grams of crack cocaine, and 38 pills.

The ATF and Monroe Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney J. Aaron Crawford prosecuted the case.

Anthony Tywan Newton, 38, of Ruston, Louisiana, was sentenced to spend 124 months (10 years, 4 months) in prison, followed by 5 years of supervised release, for possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime. In March 2020, agents with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) executed a search warrant at a residence on Eastland Avenue in Ruston. Agents seized plastic bags containing 17.5 grams of methamphetamine, 267 dosage units of MDMA, 7 dosage units of Xanax, 27 dosage units of penicillin, and 15 dosage units of Tylenol with codeine, as well as cash. When examining the serial numbers on the U.S. Currency, agents were able to determine that a portion of it was used in earlier controlled buys conducted by law enforcement agents and involving Newton. In addition to the drugs and cash, agents seized a pistol and rifle in Newton’s residence.

The DEA and ATF conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert F. Moody prosecuted the case.

Counselor arrested for abusing girl in his care, Palm Sheriff’s office says

by Jeff Jones August 5, 2021
By Jeff Jones

PALM COAST, FL – A counselor who was providing services to a young girl in his care.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Department issued the following release:

On August 3, 2021, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Major Case Unit (MCU) was granted an arrest warrant for a suspect who sexually molested a juvenile. Robert Neal Batie (DOB: 4/21/1961) sexually abused the victim whom he’s been providing therapy services for over the last five months.

On June 29, 2021, the FCSO received a report from a juvenile who disclosed that she had been sexually molested the previous day while attending a counseling session. The MCU responded to the location of the incident at Palm Coast Counseling, LLC., located at 1 Hargrove Grade.

The victim stated that she had been attending therapy sessions at the facility for the past five months and during the most recent session, Batie engaged in several unlawful acts of sexual misconduct with her. Batie’s employment at Palm Coast Counseling coincidentally ended that same week.

On August 3, 2021, after gathering a significant amount of corroborating evidence and subsequently receiving a biological report from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE), MCU Detectives secured a warrant for the arrest of Batie.

FCSO MCU Detectives LaVerne and Crosbee immediately proceeded to track down Batie at his new place of employment, AZA Health, located at 1455 Dunn Avenue, Daytona Beach, and with the assistance of the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD), Batie was taken into custody.

“This was a remarkable joint effort between our Major Case Unit Detectives and DBPD to get this guy off the street,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “I want to thank the detectives for their tireless efforts to bring justice to this victim and her family. This disgusting pervert is now in jail where he belongs and can no longer prey on children. I applaud the victim for speaking out and hope she gains some closure with his arrest.”

Robert Batie was arrested and is being temporarily held at the Volusia County Branch Jail, awaiting transport to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility. He is being charged with Sexual Battery While in Custodial Authority, Two Counts of Unlawful Sexual Activity with Certain Minors, and Sexual Misconduct by a Psychotherapist. He is being held on no bond.

At this time, no evidence has been uncovered suggesting that there are any additional victims, however, any and all victims of sexual abuse are encouraged to come forward so that justice can be sought.
