FRESNO, CA – A man who was out of jail on bail for another crime is now back in jail, this time for raping and molesting a 15-year-old girl.  Detectives with the Central California Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force have arrested 26-year-old Christopher Contreras of Fresno. He faces charges of rape and child molestation, arranging to meet with a minor to engage in sex and committing a felony while out on bail.

Detectives were made aware of a 15 year old girl who was possibly the victim of sexual abuse. During the investigation, detectives learned Christopher Contreras was responsible for raping the teenager. A search warrant was issued for Contreras’ home. There he was arrested and electronic devices were seized, which will be analyzed. Specific agencies involved in this investigation include: The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office, Fresno Police, the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI).

Contreras was one of 34 men arrested during the undercover operation “COVID Chat Down,” which was conducted by the ICAC Task Force from July 20 to August 2, 2020. Contreras spent less than a day in jail and was released on August 1st after posting bond totaling $1,000.

Operation COVID Chat Down was a multi-agency effort developed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, where internet usage increased across the country with people of all ages. Children in particular have engaged more with people through social media sites due to school closures and a reduction in extra-curricular activities. A potential danger of being online more often is an encounter with a sexual predator who is seeking out relationships with children.

To combat the problem, detectives with the ICAC Task Force and special agents with HSI constructed an operation to identify, contact and arrest anyone who may be trying to target a child for sex. Detectives used technology against these predators, posing as 12 and 13-year-old boys and girls, conversing with men through online apps. During their conversations, these suspects used sexually explicit language and sent graphic photos to the detective pretending to be a child. Once the suspect requested to meet with the child, detectives arrived at a predetermined location and arrested them. No actual children were ever used or placed into danger during the operation.

So far in 2020, the ICAC Task Force has made a little more than 100 arrests related to the distribution and possession of child [censored]ography, including images of children being raped. In 2019, ICAC made a total of 50 arrests. Most of these arrests occur with victims not being known due to this violent material being produced all around the world and then shared across the internet. However, ICAC detectives are well-aware that suspects who view child [censored]ography can easily progress into hands-on crimes against children. Operation “COVID Chat Down” is a prime example of how sexual behavior can escalate.

Law enforcement would like to remind the public to be vigilant when it comes to visiting websites and social media outlets. Parents should also monitor their children’s internet usage and be aware of the software apps they are using. Parents should keep the dialogue open with their children in order to build trust. Online predators often pretend to be someone else in order to lure their victims in and take advantage of them. Teach children to be wary of the person on the other end of the chat line; many times people are not who they say they are. Report any suspicious behavior right away to law enforcement or file a cyber tip through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

https://report.cybertip.org/

ICAC is comprised of 64 federal, state and local law enforcement agencies spread throughout nine counties in the Central Valley. It is dedicated to protecting children online and investigating crimes committed against children, which are facilitated by the Internet and computer usage.

Detectives believe Contreras may have victimized other children, but the crimes have not been reported. If you have any additional information about Christopher Contreras, please report it to Sgt. Chad Stokes at (559) 600-8144, Valley Crime Stoppers at (559) 498-7867, www.valleycrimestoppers.org You will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.

VALRICO, FL – The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department is searching for a man who robbed a female clerk at a gas station at gunpoint.  At one point the man pointed the gun at point-blank range at the woman’s head.

“We are  searching for the suspect seen in this video threatening a convenience store worker at gunpoint, firing a round inside the business and running away with stolen cash,” the department said.  “This happened Saturday at 10:50 p.m. at the Shell Gas Station on Lithia Pinecrest Road in #Valrico. During the incident, the man pointed the gun away and fired a round through a display shelf. In fear for her life, the clerk opened the cash register. The suspect removed an undisclosed amount of money and ran out of the store toward an unknown vehicle.”

Sheriff Chad Chronister said the man shot one round inside the gas station.

“This man entered a business with a loaded gun and was clearly not afraid to use it,” Chronister said. “We can only imagine how frightened the clerk must have felt when he pointed a gun at her, and even more so when he fired a shot at a display shelf just a few feet away.”

Chronister said deputies are working hard to identify the gunman and urges anyone who may have a tip to assist in the investigation and come forward.

“Please come forward and help us get this suspect off the streets,” Sheriff Chronister added.

PALM COAST, FL – Early Tuesday morning, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) Special Investigations Unit (SIU) with the assistance of Sheriff Rick Staly and the FCSO SWAT team served a Narcotics Search Warrant at 10 Warner Place in Palm Coast. This Search Warrant stemmed from a lengthy investigation by Detectives into allegations of suspected drug dealing occurring from the residence. Detectives were able to confirm those allegations through a series of covert investigations.

While serving the Search Warrant, 3 adults were located inside the residence. While Detectives were on scene, many neighbors in the area expressed their appreciation and gratitude to the Sheriff and the Detectives for helping to clean up their community.
Detectives seized trafficking amounts of Fentanyl, a loaded shotgun, Cannabis, prescription medication, and various drug paraphernalia to include over 100 used hypodermic needles.

Additionally, Detectives recovered a safe inside of the residence that contained jewelry valued at over $1,000.00 which was previously reported stolen by a resident in Palm Coast. Other stolen property was also recovered within the residence. Property Crime Detectives are following up with the victims and that investigation is ongoing.

Detectives arrested 24-year-old John William Iles (DOB 3/5/1996) on charges of Trafficking Fentanyl, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Possession of Cannabis, Possession of New or Legend Drug, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He is being held in the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility with no bond allowed.

Detectives located a loaded 12 gauge shotgun inside the doorway to Iles’ bedroom. Iles is a convicted felon, and has a previous felony conviction for Burglary. Iles was also found to be in possession of approximately 42 grams of Fentanyl which, if convicted, carries a minimum mandatory 25-year prison sentence.

“According to the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), 2 milligrams of Fentanyl is considered a lethal dose to most people,” Sheriff Staly said. “To put that in perspective, Iles had approximately 21,000 lethal doses of Fentanyl in his possession. It was time to get these poison peddlers off the street and help clean up the community.”

29-year-old Daniel Clark McIntyre (DOB 8/30/1991) was arrested and charged with Possession of Schedule III Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

25-year-old Tylor Whitaker (DOB 2/13/1995) was arrested and charged with Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

“This residence has been a problem house for a while and as a result has made the Sheriff’s High Interest Target list,” Sheriff Staly continued. “As always, we welcome tips from the community and thank everyone for being patient while our detectives obtained evidence for a search warrant. Guns, drugs and burglaries fuel the drug trade and destroy neighborhoods. Our detectives and SWAT team did another outstanding job successfully and safely serving a high risk search warrant. My warning to poison peddlers is if you make the Sheriff’s High Interest Target list it is only a matter of time before your new home is the Green Roof Inn and your drug house is closed down.”

McIntyre has past arrests for Domestic Violence, Criminal Mischief, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Violation of Probation, and more. Whitaker has past arrests for Failure to Appear, Solicitation, and Loitering.

Additional charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.

If you have information regarding suspicious activity in your neighborhood or near your business, contact FCSO at 386-313-4911 or send an email to [email protected]. You can also call Crimestoppers to remain anonymous at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477).

PALM COAST, FL – The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the death of a male found in the water at Graham Swamp during the early morning hours of September 28th, 2020. The subject has been positively identified as that of Giovanne Sylvain, an 18-year-old male who had been missing since the evening of September 25, 2020.
FCSO Major Case is currently investigating the death due to the suspicious circumstances and the autopsy results. The determination of cause of death is awaiting testing from toxicology and anthropology.
The FCSO wants the public to know that this is common practice in death investigations and does not necessarily mean the subject was the victim of a violent act or that there is any threat to the community. Death investigations are inherently complex as they involve multiple disciplines and take time to ensure that proper conclusions and information released are accurate and verifiable.
“We are always committed to demonstrating transparency but we do not want to release any information that later may be determined to be inaccurate,” Sheriff Rick Staly said. “We understand that the public has concerns and we will provide more information as the investigation progresses.”
The investigation has revealed that Sylvain was at Advent Health on September 25 and was acting erratically. He left shortly after 7:30pm on his bicycle. He is believed to have died a few hours after this. If anyone has any information related to the death or Sylvain’s activity after he left Advent Health, please contact the lead investigator on the case, Detective Dawson, at 386-586-4823.

NORTH NAPLES, FL – Deputies arrested a 29-year-old man Tuesday after he used fraudulent identification to purchase merchandise from a North Naples auto parts store. Rey Ernesto Borroto Derrick of 8690 Weir Drive, Unit 305, is charged with identity theft, credit card fraud and petty theft. Collier County Sheriff’s Office arrest reports gave this account:

Two men entered Advance Auto Parts, 1935 Pine Ridge Road, and requested assistance. One of the men, later identified as Borroto Derrick, purchased two calipers, two rotors, brake fluid, and two ignition coils. Borroto Derrick used a credit card and a pin number to complete the transaction which totaled more than $600.

As the salesman was assisting the pair, he received a phone call from the victim saying his credit card had just been used at the store. The salesman provided the amounts of the purchase just made by Borroto Derrick which the victim confirmed to be the amounts used by his card.

The salesman excused himself and alerted law enforcement. Borroto Derrick and his companion fled the store and drove off in a black Chevrolet Camaro. Deputies located the Camaro at the intersection of Savannah Court and Plantation Circle in East Naples and conducted a traffic stop. Borroto Derrick was one of two passengers in the vehicle. The vehicle owner gave deputies permission to search the vehicle. The search turned up the items that Borroto Derrick had just purchased at Advance Auto Parts inside the trunk.

Borroto Derrick was taken into custody and booked into the Collier County jail on the felony and misdemeanor charges.

HERNANDO, FL – On October 10th, 2020, members of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team arrested an armed suspect who had barricaded himself inside of a Hernando home after killing one victim, and threatening four others.  The suspect responsible for the incident has been identified as 62-year-old William Poole of Hernando. Witnesses have told detectives that, following a verbal altercation with the victim, Pool’s father-in-law 80-year-old William White, Poole pulled a firearm from his pocket and shot Mr. White in a senseless act of violence. The suspect then continued to fire at deputies and neighboring residences until deputies convinced Poole to put down his weapon and surrender.
After Poole was taken into custody by SWAT team members, detectives with CCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division interviewed Poole and placed him under arrest, charging him with 2nd Degree Murder, seven counts of Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Officer, and two counts of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Poole’s bond was set at $255,000 per the bond schedule.
At approximately 4:00 PM, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) received reports of an armed suspect barricaded inside of a home with shots fired near the intersection of Highway 41 and Van Ness Road in Hernando. Deputies immediately responded to the scene and began securing the area. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Team, as well as the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, also responded and began working to safely remove the four victims being held inside the home. SWAT team members, as well as Drone Operators, from our partners at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) also responded to assist.

As the situation developed, members of both the CCSO SWAT team and the SCSO SWAT team were able to safely remove the four victims from an adjacent structure. Following their rescue, the victims began working with the CCSO Crisis Negotiation Team in an attempt to talk the suspect out of the home without further incident. After an hour of speaking to the suspect, SWAT team members were able to convince the suspect to lay down the weapon and surrender to deputies, who then took the individual into custody. Unfortunately, deputies located one victim deceased on scene.
“Members of the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office specialty teams undergo extensive training year round to ensure they are prepared for incidents such as this one,” said Sheriff Mike Prendergast. “The tireless efforts of our patrol deputies, the SWAT team, the Crisis Negotiation Team, and our partners at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office saved the life of four innocent people today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the victim. Our detectives will continue to work diligently to bring them justice.”
Detectives of CCSO’s Major Crimes Unit will continue to investigate this incident, and the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office will provide updates as they become available. Anyone with information regarding this incident should contact the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office at (352) 726-1121 and ask for the Major Crimes Unit.

MELBOURNE, FL – Brevard County Sheriff’s K-9 Junny is back on the job after spending some R&R and rehab at the Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital in Melbourne, under the care of Dr. Smith. Junny had to take a leave of absence after having an alergic reaction to an antibiotic causing him to get vertigo.

“A huge thank you to Dr. Thomas Smith and his team at  (ASEH) for taking such great care of Junny,” the department said.  “Dr. Smith and the team at ASEH worked closely with our own Veterinarians, Dr. Boyd and Dr. Jenkins to give Junny the absolute best care possible during a very stressful time for him and all of us at the Sheriff’s Office that were so worried about his condition.”

As a result of the allergic reaction and vertigo “Junny” spent several days at the hospital and was taken great care of by the staff who spoiled him rotten, but also gave him the best medical care you could ever imagine.

“Junny is thankfully healthy and back at work, so he recently stopped by to outfit the staff of Animal Specialty and Emergency Hospital with his “Junny the Mascot” shirts and to give them all a big slobbery kiss for taking care of him,” the department said.

BAY COUNTY, FL – A Florida mom has been arrested and charged for the September negligent death of her baby.  According to the Bay County Sheriff’s Department, she left the baby out in a hot car to die while she was inside, high on methamphetamine, the department said.

This case has been worked since the incident with the invaluable assistance of the Florida Department of Children and Families, The Child Protection Team, the District 14 Medical Examiner’s Office, and the State Attorney’s Office, 14th Judicial Circuit,” the department said in a release. “The BCSO responded to Dauphin’s residence when it was discovered she had left her baby in her vehicle unattended for several hours. BAKER COUNTY, FL _ On September 30, 2020 at approximately 4:30 a.m., two suspects entered a storage shed located behind Bennett’s Feed on U.S. Highway 90 and stole numerous pellet / BB rifles valued at approximately $925 in total. Shortly after assuming the investigation, detectives identified the suspects using surveillance footage, as Mark Stoddard Jr. and Tricia Bennett, both of Baker County. In an interview with Bennett (no relation to the feed store), she admitted to assisting Stoddard in committing the burglary and stealing the BB guns, and led Detectives to a location where most of the property was recovered. Stoddard, however, did not cooperate with law enforcement in this investigation and went into what can only be assumed was his version of “hiding”. A day later he was captured in Duval County after attempting to scale a barbed wire fence during a rather brief foot pursuit from JSO officers & BCSO detectives. Both suspects were arrested and charged with burglary of Bennett’s Feed and grand theft.

Oakland Park, FL – Broward Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide detectives responded to 600 East Commercial Boulevard in Oakland Park after a 2012 Chevy Traverse crashed into a concrete utility pole just after 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
Ricardo Freitas Da Silva, 35, was driving the vehicle on East Commercial Boulevard when he veered off of the roadway and struck a pole. After hitting the pole, the vehicle rotated counter-clockwise, striking a tree and a sign in the swale of Tire Kingdom. His vehicle continued through the swale, coming to a rest in the parking lot of Tire Kingdom. Da Silva was ejected from the vehicle during the initial impact.
BSO deputies from Oakland Park and Oakland Park Fire Rescue responded to the crash site. Da Silva was pronounced dead at the scene. Detectives’ preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed was a contributing factor to the crash.
