NEWARK, N.J. – A Monmouth County man has been charged with being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm, U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito announced today. The weapon in question was found, along with a number of other weapons and ammunition, during a lawful search of a pawn shop and residence connected to one of the perpetrators of the Dec. 10, 2019, mass shooting in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Ahmed A-Hady, 35, of Keyport, New Jersey, is charged in a criminal complaint with one count of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was arrested by FBI agents early this morning and is expected to appear on Monday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Joseph A. Dickson in Newark federal court.

According to the complaint, filed today:

On Dec. 10, 2019, there was a mass shooting in Jersey City in which two individuals, a male (Individual 1) and a female (Individual 2), killed three civilians after earlier killing a law enforcement officer. After the shooting, law enforcement recovered from Individual 1’s right rear pants pocket a handwritten note that contained a telephone number ending in 4115, and a Keyport, New Jersey, address. Law enforcement also recovered several weapons carried by Individuals 1 and 2, including an AR-15 rifle.

FBI agents determined that the phone number ending in 4115 contained on the note belonged to A-Hady. Law enforcement also determined that the Keyport address listed on the note was a storefront for a pawn shop.

Law enforcement obtained records of A-Hady’s history of firearm purchases. Those records indicated that around May 23, 2007, A-Hady purchased a Smith and Wesson .45 caliber handgun bearing serial number NHN5284 (the “.45 caliber”). Records also indicate that on or about June 2, 2007, A-Hady purchased a Smith and Wesson .44 caliber handgun bearing serial number CEV4085 (the “.44 caliber”).

Subsequent to purchasing the firearms, A-Hady was convicted on April 2, 2012, in Monmouth County Superior Court, of attempting to obtain a controlled dangerous substance or analog by fraud, a crime punishable by more than one year in prison. As a result of that conviction, A-Hady is no longer permitted to possess a firearm.

On the evening of Dec. 13, 2019, law enforcement officers traveled to the pawnshop and interviewed A-Hady and two of his relatives. During the course of A-Hady’s interview, he admitted to owning both the .45 caliber and the .44 caliber, but falsely denied that they were on the premises.

After A-Hady was interviewed, one of his relatives (Relative-1) told law enforcement that there was a safe located inside Company A. Relative-1 further stated that the safe contained firearms, including A-Hady’s .44 and .45 caliber handguns. Relative-1 subsequently consented to a search of the safe located inside the pawnshop. Law enforcement recovered three firearms: (i) a PK 380; (ii) a Ruger 9mm bearing serial number 33389546; and (iii) the Smith and Wesson .44 caliber handgun bearing serial number CEV4085 referenced above.

Law enforcement then lawfully searched both the pawnshop and A-Hady’s private residence. During the search of the pawnshop, law enforcement recovered six rifles (including three AR-15-style assault rifles), three handguns, and one shotgun. In addition, during the searches of the pawnshop and A-Hady’s private residence, law enforcement recovered over 400 rounds of ammunition, including a large number of hollow point bullets.

The charge of being a previously convicted felon in possession of a firearm carries a maximum potential penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

U.S. Attorney Craig Carpenito credited special agents with the FBI, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Gregory W. Ehrie in Newark; the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, under the direction of Special Agent in Charge Charlie J. Patterson in Newark; the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General, under the direction of Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal; and the N.J. State Police, under the direction of Col Patrick J. Callahan, with the investigation leading to the charge. U.S. Attorney Carpenito also thanked the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office, under the direction of Prosecutor Esther Suarez, and the Jersey City Police Department, under the direction of Director James Shea, for their assistance.

The government is represented by Ronnell Wilson, Chief of the National Security Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey, and Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dean C. Sovolos and Thomas S. Kearney, also of the National Security Unit.

Toms River Schools Press Release

This year, the global kickoff for the Hour of Code took place on Monday, December 9 and on Tuesday, young women from the district’s three high schools gathered together to meet with Ms. Aminka Belvitt, entrepreneur and president of the #ForUsGirls Foundation.

Ms. Belvitt adeptly guided students through the process of social innovation by using the UN Sustainable Development Goals and identifying real problems, connecting with the community, having multi-disciplinary collaboration, and taking action. Students worked in teams to brainstorm and develop a simple business plan using the Business Model Canvas aligned with innovation, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. Then, District Director of Technology Jay Attiya taught them how to develop apps for awareness using the glide app builder. No prior experience was necessary!

Mentors from across the district including Directors of Curriculum Norma DeNoia and Cara DiMeo; and educators Christine Girtaine, Jaime Tesoro and Amber Hull, spent time with teams developing concepts, asking questions, and providing support throughout the workshop.

Some of the students will extend their learning and outreach with their app by meeting with business owners and the Downtown Toms River Business Improvement District’s Executive Director Nick Zorojew. Their app will collect community-based data. Another team is working on an app to inform decision making and communication through district participation in athletics, band, theatre, robotics, and more.

Amber Hull said, “I know these kids have an answer, I just believe it with all my being.”

“Empowering young women is our future,” said Aminka Belvitt. “We have to help them see themselves in these spaces to understand more fully what they can accomplish.”

This event was funded by the Office of Naval Research TR:TechReady program and coordinated by Supervisor of Educational Technology Tiffany Lucey and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Marc Natanagara.

Press Release: Toms River Schools

Dec. 12, 2019— Completing its tour of schools that earned the 2018 Model Classroom Grant, OceanFirst Foundation representatives visited East Dover Elementary Dec. 6 to see the school’s Sensory Zone.

The story of how the Sensory Zone came to be is a unique one. How so? Let’s just say it involves J-Woww of Jersey Shore fame. We’ll explain.

East Dover is a fully-inclusive school with 13 self-contained classrooms and a robust special education population. Principal Matt Gray has worked closely with special education teacher Peggy Kruger to maximize the school’s resources and consider its use of space, particularly as it relates to meeting the sensory needs of students. On his way home from work one day, Principal Gray heard an anecdote on the radio about how J-Woww– real name Jennifer Farley– had created a sensory room in her own home for her autistic child. Matt relayed this information to Peggy, who just happened to share a mutual friend with Jennifer.

Connections were made. The organization J-Woww worked with to design her space, KultureCity, was more than willing to work with East Dover and help fund a new model space. Meanwhile, Peggy and Matt were working alongside district representatives to design their application for a $10,000 Model Classroom Grant from OceanFirst Foundation, which ultimately ended up being a successful effort.

With multiple funding partners, a remarkably involved school community, and more than enough passion and drive, the Sensory Zone was born. The results of this all-hands-on-deck initiative are undeniable, and were on display Friday.

The intimate but terribly outdated and underutilized space has been completely transformed to better serve special needs students and the entire student body, not to mention staff members, who frequently stop in to recharge or unwind. A mini-entry serves as a de-escalation area. An East Dover teacher who is also an artist created beautiful, branching tree murals on the wall. The room is full of multi-sensory equipment, including warm gentle lighting that changes tone, a water tower, and an acoustic rocker (Principal Gray’s personal favorite).

The vision for the room was to provide a space for students to be themselves. That vision has been met, but for Ms. Kruger, the joy was in the journey.

“The process was the most touching thing for me,” said Peggy when speaking about how the school community rallied together to make this happen. And, like the tree art on the wall, the model of the Sensory Zone branched out into the community.

Popular Toms River restaurant Rivoli’s closed in 2016, but reopened as Riv’s Toms River Hub, and in the process introduced “Chase’s Friends Zone,” a sensory space for families with autistic and special needs children. The restaurant also worked with KultureCity and consulted with East Dover leaders while visualizing and designing the space.

“It’s a wonderful thing to watch the community take this idea and expand on it,” said Gray. “This is about serving children of all needs, and it’s so important that these sensory initiatives become widespread and sustainable.”

Representatives from OceanFirst Foundation and OceanFirst Bank who attended the unveiling included Executive Director Katherine Durante; Marketing Coordinator Stephanie Toal; Toms River Branch Manager William Powell; and OceanFirst Bank VP Jill Flynn. Photos from the event are below.

World News: Trump impeachment: Committee sends charges to full House for vote

A key committee of the US House of Representatives voted along party lines on Friday to approve two articles of impeachment
against Donald Trump, charging the president with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
The action by the Judiciary Committee sets up an historic vote next week in the full House that could make President Trump only the third president in US history to be impeached.
Democrats who control the House accuse the president of betraying the public trust by withholding $391m in military aid to pressure Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce an investigation of former Vice President Joe Biden, one of Trump’s top political rivals.
