MARIETTA, PA — Last Wednesday, Lancaster County Judge Jeffrey Conrad sentenced a Marietta man, Warren Raffensberger Jr., to a prison term ranging from 8 to 18 years. Raffensberger, aged 68, residing on Nicole Street, faced convictions for illegally possessing a firearm, making terroristic threats, and committing simple assault.

The sentencing followed a March trial verdict where Raffensberger was found guilty of illegally possessing a firearm. In May, he pleaded guilty to additional charges of terroristic threats and simple assault. Prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Anthony Gilbert, the case highlighted Raffensberger’s extensive criminal history, including a 2008 conviction on similar charges.

According to Gilbert, Raffensberger attempted to manipulate the judicial process and the victim, meriting a significant sentence. “This man does not deserve the mercy of this court,” Gilbert stated. The defense attributed Raffensberger’s actions to anger management issues stemming from a motorcycle accident in the 1990s and recent personal tragedies, including the loss of his daughter during the pandemic, which led him back to heroin and methamphetamine use.

Judge Conrad rebuked Raffensberger’s assertions of religious redemption during the trial, noting his dishonesty and problematic temperament. The case originated from an August 2022 domestic incident reported by the Susquehanna Regional Police. Responding to a call at E. Market Street, officers encountered Raffensberger who admitted to assaulting his wife amid severe pain from past injuries.

The confrontation escalated as Raffensberger threatened his wife’s life and was recorded making violent threats. Police also discovered a rifle in the home, confirming Raffensberger’s illegal possession of the firearm due to his felon status from previous convictions including aggravated assault, burglary, theft, and robbery.

Mayor demands reimbursement check from the campaign

Middletown, NJ — President Joe Biden came to the Middletown riverside mansion of New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy this weekend and now, the city is learning it will have to eat the $24,000 in police and security costs incurred by the campaign.

That campaign raised $3.7 million and it’s not expected to reimburse the community for its costs.

In a News 12 report this week, residents of Middletown are expressing their frustration over the financial burden they must bear for President Joe Biden’s recent trip to New Jersey for a campaign fundraiser.

The event, hosted at Governor Phil Murphy’s residence, necessitated heightened local security, costing taxpayers approximately $24,000.

Republican Mayor Tony Perry said that while he would not have minded the expense of a governmental visit, a campaign fundraiser should not burden the taxpayers.

He pointed out the contrast between the fundraiser’s multimillion-dollar intake and the local costs: “I think that anytime a campaign comes through and isn’t on official government business, there is some responsibility to those for the inconvenience that occurs in terms of traffic. However, I think for a $3.7 million fundraiser, a $23,185.75 is an easy check to be written.”

TRENTON, NJ – It was part of the plan to attack former U.S. President Trump between New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, Attorney General Matt Platkin, and the Democrat Party. Today, they succeeded in using their official powers to deny two golf courses owned by the former President from selling liquor.

The New Jersey Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control has not renewed the liquor licenses for two golf clubs owned by former President Donald Trump, as confirmed by a spokesperson from the state’s Office of Attorney General.

Trump has described the legal attacks on him by local and state governments as ‘lawfare’.

The affected facilities are Trump National Golf Club in Colts Neck and Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster. The licenses at these locations expired on Sunday, but the clubs can continue to serve alcohol under an interim permit until a hearing is scheduled. That interim approval expires on July 19th.

Meanwhile, Trump National Golf Club Philadelphia in Pine Hill has successfully renewed its plenary consumption license on June 3, as per an ABC spokesperson.

Trenton, NJ — New Jersey Democrats and Governor Phil Murphy have proposed a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers, aimed at reducing noise and pollution. That new ban may pose significant challenges for residents outside urban areas. Suburban and rural homeowners, who typically have larger properties, may find electric leaf blowers less effective due to their generally lower power and shorter battery life than gas models and their sheer power and ability.

The financial impact is also a concern. New Jerseyans will have to take their old gas-powered blowers to the landfill because the law is also calling for an immediate ban on the use of gas-powered blowers.

Enforcement poses another challenge. Previous attempts in towns like Maplewood showed difficulties in ensuring compliance without strong enforcement strategies, which included heavy fines and anonymous reporting systems for violators. Will police patrol the neighborhoods for weekend weedwhackers and issue tickets? Will code enforcement put aside more pressing matters and become the leaf-blower police?

Another problem with the ban is that electric blowers are their lack of power when compared to gas blowers.

Corded Electric Leaf Blowers: These units are typically lighter and quieter than gas models. However, their mobility is limited by the length of the cord, which can also be cumbersome to manage while moving around large areas.

Battery-Operated Electric Leaf Blowers: These offer the advantage of cordless operation, providing greater mobility than their corded counterparts. The main limitation here is the battery life, which often lasts only 10 to 15 minutes before needing a recharge. Users frequently find it necessary to purchase higher-quality, separate batteries for extended use, as the stock batteries provided with the blower may not offer sufficient run time.

Gas Leaf Blowers: Known for their power, gas leaf blowers can handle large areas and tough debris more effectively and quickly than electric models. However, they are heavier and noisier, require regular refueling, and sometimes also need engine oil. Additionally, they emit smoke, contributing to air pollution, which is a significant drawback compared to electric models.

Each type of leaf blower has its benefits and drawbacks, and the choice often comes down to the specific requirements of the task and personal preferences regarding mobility, power, and environmental impact.

These factors suggest that while the environmental benefits of banning gas-powered leaf blowers are clear, the practical implications for those in less densely populated areas must be carefully considered to avoid undue burdens. Effective policy implementation would require addressing these challenges to meet the needs of all affected communities.

NEWARK, NJ — Asmar Earp, a 37-year-old resident of Newark, Essex County, admitted to embezzling federal benefits meant for the disabled son of his missing former girlfriend. U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced that Earp pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud and aggravated identity theft in Newark Federal Court before U.S. District Judge Evelyn Padin on June 26, 2024.

Earp was romantically involved and lived with V.W., who received Social Security benefits on behalf of her disabled minor son. V.W. went missing on December 24, 2017, and her whereabouts remain unknown. Shortly after her disappearance, Earp illicitly took control of the benefit payments by altering the PIN on the debit card used to access the funds. In the months following, he further manipulated the system by using V.W.’s personal information to obtain a replacement debit card, continuing to divert her son’s benefits for personal use. The fraudulent activities continued until February 2020, significantly impacting the intended support for V.W.’s son.

Earp faces severe penalties for his actions, including up to 20 years in prison for each wire fraud count and a mandatory two years for aggravated identity theft. These sentences are to run consecutively, reflecting the gravity of his crimes, which also carry potential fines up to $250,000, or twice the gross loss or gain from his offenses.

The investigation leading to Earp’s guilty plea was conducted by the Social Security Administration’s Office of the Inspector General and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Daniel H. Rosenblum of the General Crimes Unit represented the government in this case.

U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger announced the plea, which was entered before U.S. District Judge Susan D. Wigenton on June 27, 2024.

The charges against Nance include two counts of Hobbs Act robbery, one count of carjacking, and two counts of using and carrying a firearm during a crime of violence. These incidents occurred at the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, starting with a carjacking on December 30, 2020, where Nance stole a 2016 Toyota Corolla at gunpoint, assaulting the vehicle’s occupant in the process.

Following the carjacking, Nance continued his crime spree on January 4, 2021, robbing two restaurants. In the first incident, he pointed a loaded gun at an employee and took $176. He then attempted another robbery at a different restaurant on the same day by threatening another employee with a firearm.

The carjacking charge could result in a maximum of 15 years in prison, while the Hobbs Act robbery is punishable by up to 20 years. The firearms offenses carry a statutory minimum of five years, which must be served consecutively to any other sentence, and could extend up to a life sentence. Each count also carries a potential $250,000 fine, or twice the gross gain or loss from the offenses.

Sentencing is scheduled for October 29, 2024. The successful plea is attributed to the collaborative efforts of the Newark and Harrison police departments, along with the FBI Newark Field Division under the direction of James E. Dennehy. Assistant U.S. Attorney Megan Linares of the Organized Crime and Gangs unit is representing the government in this case.
